I wish I had... | How to Say "I WISH" in JAPANESE with BA YOKATTA

to say "i wish" in japanese you use the conditional(aka provisional) form "ba" and add "yokatta" in front of it. ex:suika wo kaeba yokatta (i wish i'd bought watermelon) (eu queria ter comprado melancia)

I am trying to make sense of the combination of a verb in present conditional and then an adjective in the past in this expression because it doesn't make logical sense in my Indoeuropean thinking mind. I would have to think of "ba" as meaning something like "the idea of..." and not as "if" and then it makes more sense.
