Artists, musicians, and filmmakers are often inspired by what they see or hear. Sometimes that thing is so great, they tell us they wish they made it themselves. It happens so often we made a segment about it called I Wish I’d Made That. In this episode, you will hear from the one and only John Waters. The man behind Hairspray, Crybaby, and Pink Flamingos. He stops by the show to talk about the 1975 film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, which is directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. The release of Salò was controversial and some might say it is one of the most upsetting movies ever made. John Waters, aka “The Pope of Trash,” has been a longtime fan of Pasolini’s work. So, it is no surprise that he chose to talk about this film.

    Michael Haneke and Gaspar Noe, amongst other good directors, also admire Salo. The funny thing is that Waters’ work, although provocative, is full of humour, whereas Haneke and Noe’s films are depressing like Pasolini’s masterpiece.

    Foucalt showed an immense interest in BDSM/sadism and torture in general, filled his school living area with photos of torture paintings by Goya...led a life filled with subsequent real life sado-masochistic fervor...with himself playing the torturer apparently. One of the best figures of a modern day Sade....speaking of Pasolini's film. Pasolini's own subcultural adherences feature a similar story with similar subject matter and themes....as does John Waters here. Is his take on Salo meant to be giddy, ecclectic, kitsch-like...and just something just oh so wholesomely depraved? My issue with Waters is his choice of this film, out of anything, versus say a Scorcese and his choice of films when asked what he considers "art." Would have been nice to ask Waters up front why all of these themes do not become transgression and brutality outright, as he says "debased," but ironically quirky....with what I've read of Pasolini regarding his serious marxist take...whereas Waters has no political conciousness, outside of "be transgressive just to be transgressive," in a society which is anything but the sort. Waters is the mainstream...so if he made Salo, what would he make it to be shocking? Would it just be normal and quaint, heterosexual normalcy and religion in its place? How could Waters ever direct an adaptation of Sade when the modern Western world is made in Sade's image of a libertine degenerate. Waters ultimately amounts to an unfunny joke continually existing to poke fun at something no longer there. There is nothing quaint, no Jeff Koons kitsch to ironically consume, its a post-truth simulacrum of signs and signals put out for consumption and libertine adherence, there is no seriousness to any of it. Just a costume party of elites deaying by the hour, still choosing to dance as if it somehow is still shocking anyone, as the town decays under its own class based issues, decays under corn syrup and TLC sitcoms, cannibalizing itself as everything just keeps spinning, and he wants nothing more than to don a robe and mask and dance with those covered in sagging and putrifying flesh. What an outstanding man, right?

    @@travisbickle2970 Yes, the classic projection accusation. Everything I wrote is representative of Water's and his general approach, coupled with a serious societal viewing in regards to the current climate; and what constitutes transgression in a "sadian" world, at least a sade-infused western world. Projection would be me getting mad and lashing out at accusations which Waters would be innocent of to cover my own, yet I never directed Pink Flamingo's, and given the oppurtunity to say what film I wish I had made given the choice, would say The Searchers, or The Wild Bunch...or in the case of my profile pic here and your username, Taxi Driver would have been a fun film. Hard to see where I'm saying anything not applicable, and I'm very doubtful Waters would disagree with my overall questions concerning him, his work, and his view on both society and art. You can fact check me on Foucault, or anything else here, I am not speaking in subjectives.
