I like him. He is always smiling. I remember him laughing when Shakhriyar Mamedyarov made a very weird move in the opening during the candidates.

Why do chess players keep their trainers and team a secret?

Maybe because if you know the trainer of your opponent you prepare your game differently

Trainers specialize in certain openings and the chess world knows what they are. If specific trainers are revealed, players are afraid their opponents would know which openings they are preparing.

@@claudiog7692 One example is Dubov helping Carlsen in his match against Caruana which was only divulged after the match. Dubov specialized in a specific variation of the Sicilian which Magnus used in his match. There are many more examples and this is well known in the chess world.

If he does not want to say, is it possible that his trainer is ... Karjakin ? He is not banned any more, but refuses to play under FIDE flag, so he is kinda out of job right now, noone really knows what he is doing. But his chess skills are still there, he played couple of small tournaments in Russia, beat Artemiev and drawed with Grischuk few times.

lol funny idea but I think he just does not want to reveal his trainer in the middle of the tournament in case it can be used against him. Also, I really don't see Karjakin wanting to be anyone's trainer and we have no idea if he would be any good at it if he was. Just because someone is a great chess player doesn't automatically make them a good coach or second.

I think not. Karjakin sent a denunciation to the Russian prosecutor's office with a complaint against all chess players who openly opposed the war. Now he is persona non grata among Russian chess players.

Nepo himself has seconds like Kramnik, Vitiugov, Matlakov, Leko. He doesn't have much time to train others i think!
