I've been swimming it across (many times) in North-Western part. Once almost got squashed by a lifeguard's motorboat. There also were random guys who rented some boats and were just swimming along the stream. None of them have ever acted blind and gotten close enough to me. So much for people whose jobs aren't saving people on water.

River transport in London is really bad. It only runs during summer, even though climate is warm and river never freezes. And even with this short summer time operation they managed to drown entire boat full of passengers not so long ago. Moscow looks like a sci fi movie in comparison.

Moscow looks like a city from the future. Whether it is transport or even simple parks. Such incredible style and design. I've not seen anything as nice anywhere in Europe or even in the USA. Moscow is quite possibly the best place for comfortable modern life on our planet. It has been selected in the top 5 cities by various organisations, but other cities such as London don't even come close. Underground in London is a horror and a health hazard. Healthcare (NHS) is substandard, and that is when they are not on strike. There have been reports of heart attack patients waiting for ambulance for a week in the UK.

@@TravellingwithRussell Yes, fish & chips is the only thing left of old British glory. And even fish & chips is now a huge struggle. Apparently cod for UK fish and chips shops was coming from Russian trailers. Then clever UK gov sanctioned Britain for getting reasonably priced cod from Russia, so now your average fish & chips meal costs close to £20 in London. And only God knows where fish is coming from now. Probably still from Russia, but it now has to travel to India first and then sail back to UK at double price to make sure both India and Russia make mega profit.

The wait in line is ridiculous but it's important to point out this is just initial launch and these first few days are free to ride. Although these boats can (and will) definitely be used as leasure/sightseeing, their primary purpose is to be part of Moscow's transport infrastructure. Just like the Staten Island Ferry or The Roosevelt Island Tramway in New York City. I believe the initial launch was 9 or 10 vessels, but the plan is to double this number by year's end. These boats are built in St Petersburg.

It is unlikely that this will work as a transport, because it is too slow. There is only one metro stop from Kieskaya to Moscow City, 5 minutes drive, when by boat it takes at least 20 minutes, plus waiting time. Most likely it will be just a pleasure boat for recreation.

We don't know yet - the year-round service began two days ago. Fortunately, the winters now aren't as cold as they were half a century ago; this winter's minimum was merely −27.3°C, and after a few cold days it returned to around −5°C. The ice cannot build up as thick as it used to be, and it is routinely and regularly broken up. The Radisson boozing boats operate through the winter, for years. The new service is in pleasure category, too - the seven-kilometer ride takes one hour, it costs same as three subway rides (six on weekends), and there's no exemption for the elderly (regular city transport is free of charge for Moscow pensioners).

In winter, the river gets absolutely crowded by ice fishing enthusiasts with their drills and tents. So even in winter, the river is under patrol by lifeguards on hovercrafts. Then again, it's not just about hovercrafts, Russians have their ways to cross frozen waters.
