We basically suck at sex scenes generally. I don't know if it has to do with societal repression or what, but 99% of sex scenes in British movies are off-putting AF, and about as erotic as a dead fish. Of course, sometimes that's actually a good thing; for example, the sex scene in Get Carter really adds to the overall nasty sleaziness that defines the movie (whether intentionally or not, idk). Same goes with Mike Leigh's Naked. But when the film isn't meant to be deliberately sleazy and gritty then it becomes a problem, because like I said I don't know what it is but British films just can't seem to make sex, well, sexy. Having said that, Carry On Camping (which doesn't contain any explicit sex scenes but is still very much a British sex comedy) is an absolute classic and I will die on that hill.

I just realised something. One of the police officers is Derek Griffiths! One of the best children's presenters and narrators from the 70s and 80s. He was in "Play School", "Play Away", etc. "Through one of the windows today, you can see me being forced into making a terrible film at gunpoint. You can see it through.... the square window!"

Icl Ray Cooney looks like the nicest guy ever. The kinda guy who, if you were trying to buy something in a shop and your card declined, would pay for it for you. And then, when your leaving, you see him putting all his stuff back because he can’t afford it anymore, and you tell him how sorry you are and he says “Oh don’t worry about me. I’ve lived my life already. Now I’m just waiting to see my wife again” and it breaks your fuckin heart. This is based on that one time I went to a shop and my card declined please don’t ask me about it I don’t wanna cry again.

Same goes for his media appearances as himself, one minute he comes across as a complete wannabe hardman twat, and the next he comes across as really self-aware and personable. Man's a walking contradiction...

You can just tell this was adapted from a stage play farce, if we went to see the original in the theatre it'd probably be a good old laugh for an evening but that sort of thing basically never works when they try and make it into a film. Interesting to see that Fawlty Towers has actually done the opposite and is now doing a stage play of the TV series, which emphasises the brilliance of the material there.
