But or Rent - The Karate Kid - • The Karate Kid
Daniel (Ralph Macchio) moves to Southern California with his mother, Lucille (Randee Heller), but quickly finds himself the target of a group of bullies who study karate at the Cobra Kai dojo. Fortunately, Daniel befriends Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki "Pat" Morita), an unassuming repairman who just happens to be a martial arts master himself. Miyagi takes Daniel under his wing, training him in a more compassionate form of karate and preparing him to compete against the brutal Cobra Kai.

Thank you so much for reviewing the Karate Kid (with those scenes that yes still make me cry every time I watch it). Robert Mark Kamen, the screenwriter of the Karate Kid wanted Pat Morita to play Mr. Miyagi but the Director, John Guibert Avildsen, didn't believe Morita, a stand-up comic, could handle such a serious role. When Pat Morita showed up yet again for another audition, he performed with Ralph Macchio the scene of the drunk Mr. Miyagi, opening up to Daniel about how his wife and son were lost in childbirth in the internment camp while he was in the 442 infantry Regiment, fighting for the country than put them there. After seeing this performance Avildsen shouted, "That's Mr. Miyagi! Who is this actor?" His assistant leaned forward and told him, "that's Pat Morita, the actor you've been turning down." Pat Morita truly owned the role of Mr. Miyagi, perfectly blending his humour with heartfelt compassion to make the perfect example of an Ultimate Mentor and Teacher. I also liked how small parts of history and Japanese culture were mixed into this fictional story. The Karate Kid is where I first learned about the WWII Japanese internment camps (which we also had in Canada). The 2010 Karate Kid 'remake' is good but tells a different story and even Jackie Chan stated it should have been called the Kung Fu Kid.

@JV’s Galactic Adventures Yes, In Karate Kid, Mr. Miyagi fought in WWII for the USA but his pregnant wife was in a Japanese American interment camp. She bled out when delivering the baby. Both Mom and baby passed. That is Part 1 of Mr. Miyagi’s back story. You will get more in Karate Kid part 2. Along similar lines, with respect to episode 6 of Avatar the last Airbender “Imprisoned’ you may want to know that George Takei who plays SULU in the Original STAR Trek 1966-1968, the first 7 Star Trek Movies, the ancestor in Mulan, conventions and cameo appearances, is the actor who plays the voice of the Warden in the “Imprisoned” episode. This allowed George Takei to draw on his own experiences of Prison camp Wardens, given how WWII impacted his life. During WWII, when George Takei was ages 5 through 9, he and his family were forcibly put in a Japanese Internment Camp, in the United States, because the US Government was afraid of all Americans of Japanese Origin or Descent. He survived the 4 war years as a kid, in a US guarded prison camp, because President FDR thought any American who had any tie to Japan, or had Japanese Ancestry was a possible threat to the national security of the United States. George Takei in the 2010’s wrote the play Allegiance (and acted in it) as a way of documenting his experiences growing up in a prison camp, just because of his Japanese ancestry until WWII was over. Then he and his family members that survived, (some did not) were allowed to go back to their previous existence, if possible. Currently George Takei is alive, well, and 86 years old. Those that survived were granted US citizenship but the US government did not formally apologize to the survivors until August 10th 1988, when Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 (at least 40+) years after the events. The act granted each surviving internee $20,000 in compensation, which was equivalent to $43,000 in 2022. Payments began in 1990, only to those survivors currently Alive, at the time the redress checks were sent out. A total of 82,219 received redress checks. The legislation stated that government actions had been based on "race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership" as opposed to legitimate security reasons. According to Wikipedia, “The Civil Liberties Act of 1988, Restitution for World War II internment of Japanese-Americans and Aleuts, states that it is intended to: “…1 acknowledge the fundamental injustice of the evacuation, relocation, and internment of United States citizens and permanent resident aliens of Japanese ancestry during World War II; … 2 apologize on behalf of the people of the United States for the evacuation, relocation, and internment of such citizens and permanent resident aliens; …3 provide for a public education fund to finance efforts to inform the public about the internment of such individuals so as to prevent the recurrence of any similar event; …4 make restitution to those individuals of Japanese ancestry who were interned; …5 make restitution to Aleut residents of the Pribilof Islands and the Aleutian Islands west of Unimak Island, in settlement of United States obligations in equity and at law, for - injustices suffered and unreasonable hardships endured while those Aleut residents were under United States control during World War II; …6 personal property taken or destroyed by United States forces during World War II; community property, including community church property, taken or destroyed by United States forces during World War II; and traditional village lands on Attu Island not rehabilitated after World War II for Aleut occupation or other productive use; discourage the occurrence of similar injustices and violations of civil liberties in the future; and …7 make more credible and sincere any declaration of concern by the United States over violations of human rights committed by other nations.”

And it's one of my all-time favorite movie soundtracks. 7:59 Daniel's dad does get brought up in a future movie. So, you will learn about that. Fun Fact: Ralph Macchio(Daniel) got to keep the yellow car from this movie. And he still has it. You should definitely continue on with the rest of the "The Karate Kid" trilogy and then start on "Cobra Kai". Some other great Ralph Macchio movies that I very highly recommend are: The Outsiders, Crossroads, and My Cousin Vinny. Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

Great reaction! It's such a great movie -- directed by Rocky Oscar Winner John Avildsen, and the Bill Conti score and the screenplay by Robert Mark Kamen are perfect. My favorite aspect is what a nice person Daniel is (and Miyagi, Alli, his mom, etc.). It also shows Daniel and his Mom having to deal with being poor while living in an affluent area, which you don't see a lot of on film with kids. As many have probably noted, Mr. Miyagi's wife was sent to Manzanar, a US Japanese internment camp, an incredibly shameful part of our US history, and she died there in childbirth (baby too). The conditions of the camps were atrocious and involved the imprisonment and mistreatment, torture, and starvation, of our own citizens because of their Japanese heritage. We should always be ashamed of this, so I appreciate that the movie includes it. As an even greater irony, Mr. Miyagi is shown to have won the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration, and his unit (the 442nd Regimental combat team) was a mostly Japanese American unit and the most highly decorated unit in US military history). As a little trivia -- the movie was supposed to end after a battle outside that came down to Miyagi versus Kreese, but while editing the movie, they realized the more powerful ending was simply Daniel's joy and Mr. Miyagi's approving nod (and they were right, I think it's amazing). Meanwhile, seriously, JV, please don't move to Texas. I lived in Houston and Dallas for several years, and while it can be great in some ways, and many people are amazing, there is still unfortunately a lot of racism really subtly part of the culture. Pick California instead.

I lived in Orlando for a year. You would like Florida more than California. Never know when an earthquake is coming. You know when a hurricane is coming and you can leave early enough to be safe.

Just keep in mind you still get a winter, it's just from June through August depending on what part of California, right now it's 110 fahrenheit, so that's basically winter to hot to go outside, too hot to run, too hot to do anything but indoor activities, so it might as well be winter

This movie was so important to me that I will never watch the remake. I feel like it would be disrespectful to the memory of Pat Morita. Even moreso after watching Karate Kid II. THAT one is my favorite, I love Mr Miyagi's backstory.

You, thinking there were no schools like this back in the day, you'd be surprised. My father started a system of martial arts in the late 60s and had to "contend" with all sorts of bullies and crazies. You wouldn't believe.

I grew up in the American Southeast where it's summer at least 9 or 10 months of the year, sometimes it's ALL year (I would be out in flip flops on Christmas sometimes) now I live in the mountains of the PNW where it's winter most of the year and I LOVE it. You always love what you can't have lol I don't miss it being so hot I felt like I was being boiled alive for six months. I much prefer the snow lol

You really should do Karate Kid 1-3 and then Cobra Kai. It has the same actors in it. PS: I'm from Sweden so I know a thing or two about dark, cold winters. Also: Ralph Macchio was gifted the yellow car when the movie was done and he still has it to this day.

9:28 I can relate to that JV during my first day of secondary school or high school when I was 13 this one kid wouldn't leave me alone and on one day I was in the school toilets washing my hands when he came out of nowhere and put his hand over the dryer to wind me up and so I hammered him in the jaw and it was on I won that fight and eventually this kid left the school never to be seen again

I grew up in Buffalo New York for 40 years of my life and it's very similar to Toronto only being about 2 hours apart except we get more snow. I moved out west but I would stay away from California just because most my customers who live there are nice people but they say it's too populated to polluted and too expensive. Texas might be a good idea because there's low taxes but I moved to Colorado just because I like the mountains and it's a more balanced seasons less humidity than Texas and it's actually a lot sunnier than most states only Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona are sunnier than Colorado. a lot of people think it snows all the time in Colorado but that's not true that's only up on the top of the mountains for skiers which is only 10% of the state I actually live south of Denver more near Colorado springs and I get to play tennis in 60° weather in January so you might want to do your research on Colorado or at least visit these states first before you move there for sure.

So when I moved to a new school, I did not interfere with what was happening but Daniel did and then Johnny was the bully???? Why do so many people believe that??? Johnny even said it “you couldn’t leave it alone, could you. No you had to push it” well????
