I love this movie so much cus it has such a unique message. You can try your hardest and want it the most, but some things still don't turn out how you want them to. But thats ok you make changes to the plan. Mike never got to be a scarer but he discovered that he's a really good coach, he can still work on the scare floor. The movie came out when ppl who watched the first one as kids were in that kind of university/ finding your place in the world stage and its really important to hear sometimes things don't work out and somethings aren't the right fit for you and thats ok, its going to be ok, cus if you keep trying you will find something thats right for you.

Yes exactly how I feel! This is a top 5 Pixar movie for me and I like it more than the first. People are often surprised when I say it’s one of my favorites so this is essentially how I describe it to them. As a young millennial I feel like all the media I consumed growing up really only taught the idea of “if you try hard enough you can achieve anything you want.” That’s a great message, but misguided for many as it makes it seem like you’re a failure if you can’t achieve something exactly as you planned. This became my comfort movie, especially during the pandemic.

not only is it a great message because sometimes things don't work out the way you expected them to, but it's also a great message surrounding disability. the "you can do anything" mantra rings false if you have a disibility that literally makes it impossible for you to do certain things. even if mike isn't disabled, his appearence and general state of being prevents him from being a scarer - he could try forever, and he does, but some things just aren't possible for some people. i think it's a much healthier message, that just because you can't do anything doesn't mean you have no worth as a person

I mean he’s a freaking green one eyed monster like what little child might not be scared of that? Especially younger children like toddlers, the girls he encountered in the cabin looked around 6 or 7 and they probably didn’t have any phobias to anything he could do.

My best friend in high school and I took different paths after graduation. She went to college and I went into the Marines. We use to talk about how all the things that happened in the dorms also happened in the barracks. Same age group, same mindset, same emotional maturity. It doesn't matter, we were all stupid but we all thought we were grown. Years later, when my son was in school, I thought it would be a good idea to get a job as a paraeducator so that we would be on the same school schedule. It soon became very clear that I can not handle spending 8 hours a day in a classroom. I love kids but I really don't have the patience for it. I don't know how teachers do it. Lastly, when Monster's University came out, my son and I went to see it in the theaters because we both were big fans of Monster's Inc. For years, we had this running argument about which was better. I thought Monster's Inc., he thought Monster's University. After re-watching it a few times, I had to concede that Monster's University was better. I do still think though that the two movies are underappreciated and some of the best in Pixar's catalogue.

Don’t destroy yourself because you don’t fit the mold.

The only other "evil" roles I can remember are the Tyto Queen from Legend of The Guardians Owls of Ga'Hoole, Morgan le Faye from Excalibur, and whatever role she plays in the new Shazam movie (I haven't seen it yet). It will never happen. this is similar to how Mike is just not scary as a monster, it just wont happen. but it doesnt mean he still cant be within the career path hes always wanted.

While I do prefer the original Monsters Inc, I still really enjoyed the prequel, especially as someone who is a college student. The main highlight for me was one of its messages, like the one where there’s always another option to your career if you don’t have the qualities to that specific one, but you’ll eventually find your calling. In this case, Mike, despite putting his heart and soul into everything, struggles with facing the reality that he’s not scary enough to be a scarer. After he and Sulley got expelled, they both worked their way back up to the top and found themselves successful positions at Monsters Incorporated.

The statue with the toe Mike rubbed in the beginning is a reference to a statue at Yale of one of their former presidents that students traditionally rub for good luck.. I think there might be a similar statue at Harvard too..

Thank you for bringing that up Billy for one semester when I graduated with a Bachelor that last semester was when I stayed in the apartment dorms for seniors, and because my boyfriend is in the army and I visited a few bases with him. I told him too that the dorms are like the barracks where I visited him in Hawaii 😆 When I graduated high school 2011 I went to. and graduated from Moorpark Community College: I was in the hospital a lot so that's why my years in college are apart but I kept going :) AA: Humanities 2017 AA: Social and Behavioral Sciences 2019 California State University of Channel Islands Bachelor: Chicano Studies 2022 and now in the fall California State University of Northridge Master: Marriage and Family therapy 🤓TBA

8:39 some schools have “traditions” where you touch a statue before entering a building or area. example: every time we would enter the football stadium at my highschool, there was a little statue we had to touch for “good luck”. its fine if you didnt do it, but it was just the norm to always tap it before starting anything on the field

Not a teacher myself but at 8 years old my teacher was also my teacher at church. So instead of switching between "Mrs LastName" and "Sister LastName", I just started calling her Paula. I got in a fair amount of trouble at school and church haha.

And now being 19, makes me sad cuz Pixar movies are SUCH good movies!! And they don't make a lot of Pixar movies anymore. 😭 Thanks! For doing this movie Billy!!!!

This movie came out the same year as Toy Story 3 both which involved college and the same year I was graduating high school. It had an emotional impact on me because of that connection. 36:31 i really wanted a sequel with Boo however this line and scene sealed my appreciation for this film. How many of us have dealt with people saying they understand? Yes empathy is good just not like that. And the ending traditional Pixar, their characters dont get the happily ever after they expected instead they get something different or in a unexpected way.

funny how being called by your first name as a teacher can be disrespectful in the US, while here in Sweden it's the complete opposite. We've dropped calling people mr/miss/mrs or "professor X" since a couple decades back, so when I was in school I always addressed teachers and friends parents by their first name (or in the case of the parents, "friend's mom/dad" would also suffice). Fun how different cultures can be

Interesting how even some countries with similar cultures have these slight changes: I’m Mexican, born and raised, and I used to call them “profe” (short for professor/profesor in Spanish) or miss. It was disrespectful to call them by their name. Then I moved to Spain 4 years ago and I found out they addressed them by their names, never by their profession. Interesting considering we speak the same language and everything.

The movie is a life lesson some are just gifted at something u want sometimes. Doesn't mean they can become one of the greats, but others can help everyone is good at something. Put it like mike tyson and his coach, tyson was a gifted natural athlete but was homeless going to jail and had nothing, cus found him gave him a homs and trained him with all his knowledge and Tyson perfected everything cus taught him and became a machine. Everyones good at something cus was amazing at teaching and his knowledge, tyson was the natural athlete. Mike knowledge and smart great leader. Sully great scarer
