But Genuinely I think the "Guy" (will look up his name) made it genuinely interesting and engaging. The old Tide powder was FANTASTIC!!!! Back in the very early 1980's, the two family house in which I lived caught fire; it was a very old house, and the smoke was black and thick, and really settled and caked on everything. The items in my flat were smoke-damaged, and one thing I did, after I moved what could be saved, was attempt to clean the oh so many things that needed cleaning. I found that Tide was my saving grace. It cut through that sooty smoke like nobody's business!!!! I saved lampshades, clothing, a wicker chair, blankets, you name it... things that I thought were damaged beyond saving washed up and cleaned up, and it was all because of, and thanks to Tide! Somehow, I do not think the Tide pods would be as effective.

Tide in the early 1980s was a lot different. I remember the appliance store telling dad to wash the window A/C unit with Tide and hot water. It would get greasy kitchen floors and walls clean. Today it cleans clothes better although it is no longer an all-around cleaner. It now uses enzymes to break up dirt and stains. The older Tide you could wash your car with it and it didn't damage the paint. I think Mean Green has some of the old chemicals because it breaks up the black dirt in my vacuum filter. Mean Green also works on fresh iodine spills.

I have a Kenmore Elite HE dishwasher (Whirlpool chassis) that gets the dishes clean with little fuss, but the quality of the detergent is critical as well as the use of rinse aid. The cheap stuff won't cut it. The best I have tried was cascade complete but typically use members mark brand which is acceptable. Also, the 120 degree water temp recommended these days is BS. All of the detergents (clothes washer too) work better with hotter water.

You really can find anything on the internet, apparently. My parents had a Maytag they bought in the early 70s. It ran basically flawlessly for over 30 years. Almost everything on it was made of metal. Yes, it used a lot of water, but it was simple and reliable. I ran into this channel because I was figuring out how to fix my second problem with an LG washer that is less than 10 years old. I am actually seriously thinking about replacing my new washer with a rebuilt old one like this. The whole "they don't make 'em like they used to" thing is absolutely true when it comes to washing machines.

Absolutely True! In the early 70's, my mom and dad moved into my Grandmother's house. The brought their used Maytag washer and dryer. My dad poured a lifted concrete slab in the basement, with room for 2 washers and 2 dryers. Then he ran the plumbing and electric for his set and my grandma's set. I grew up with having 2 washers and dryers, and 6 people living in our home in the late 70's/early 80's. Grandma's washer finally died after 20 years. Mom spent weeks researching what unit's to buy, using consumer reports, reader's digest, and talking to people everywhere. She bought 2 brand new Maytag washers, replacing hers as well. Those 2 machines lasted until around 2015 and it cost too much to just "fix them". 30 years was more than we expected in a home full of people. When I moved out in 1999, I bought a used version of the exact same model along with the matching dryer for $200. As a single guy, the washer lasted from 1999 till around 2013 when the transmission went out. The appliance shop had a used Maytag they had just repaired, and sold me for $100. It was the newer version of the same model. It's going on 10 years of trouble free service. The dryer went out in 2016 after an electrical surge to the house hit. It was replaced with a used $60 "Roper" that has run flawlessly for years now. I just purchased a new-to-me home and included in the deal was the exact same washer I already have! I know this sounds stupid, but I'm excited to know that I'll be covered for at least another 10 to 20 years. They may not be the most efficient machines, but the peace of mind knowing they will continue to run with plenty of parts available to fix is enough for me to keep them around as long as possible.

Maytag was suffering from serious quality control issues once they started to come out of the 80’s and greed got into the business and to many divisions got developed. There was many a wrench thrown into machines. The robust Maytag was gone even though the soul was still there. Whirlpool has done nothing to improve on that basic structure of quality Maytag was once known for. Their version of it at best! People coming today won’t ever know anything about that distinction. Maytag and Speed Queen are largely faint copies of yesteryear. But the only two manufacturers that truly competed in the commercial market together and even in the residential market. Everything else even it though built better than today, then was still cheaply built compared to a Maytag or a Speed Queen. It’s all relative!

Although ours was not the "standard-capacity" it was the "EX-large capacity tub" that had a stainless-steel... solid-tub. I knew 1 cup of Tide was way to much for that washer with the wash-action that it has. Using 1/2 cup Tide would have more than done the job. Those solid-tub SQ washers were the best! My brother had a co-worker who helped design Tide for Proctor & Gamble. The man said that they graphed the amount of Tide's effectiveness with the amount used. They took the highest amount of Tide used until too much became ineffective. That amount is what they set as the amount to use, so the company would make the most money because you would run out of it faster causing you to buy more. Most people are unaware of this. He suggested using less Tide than what they recommended because it would be still effective using a lower amount.

Detergents today aren't like the ones from back in the 50's; it seemed to wash your clothes much better compared to recent detergents. The machine didn't do too bad being 40 years old; much better than some of these high class washers of today. Thanks for the demonstration :-)

Reading the tide box reminds me of that time as a kid my mom used laundry detergent for washing dishes. Ironically, I think it was tide lol. It did the job. On a side note, my grandparents (may they rest in peace) had an old top-load washing machine. It was old in the 1990s so it was probably 70s or 80s. At the time I didn't think much of it, but as an adult with access to only "high-efficiency" or front-loaders, I've noticed my clothes just don't get fully clean. You can wash them three times in a row and they will still be dirty. However, my grandparents old machine, when my grandma did laundry, the clothes were actually clean. I remember seeing the white laundry bright white in the sun while line drying and she somehow getting every speck of stain and dirt out of every garment and I never saw her pretreating or anything like that. Those old machines were just different I guess compared to modern machines. One thing I do remember her doing is once it filled and agitated for a short time to mix everything up, she would let it soak for a while before letting it resume the cycle. I want clean clothes back.

What I learned in university chemistry was that old school detergent molecular chains couldn't be broken down by bacteria and/or would kill them in the streams and water treatment plants. Hence, no clean water and suds in streams. So, they changed the molecular structure so the bacteria could eat and break down detergent in the wild once it went down the drain.

Nice to see washing powder has a long shelf life lol. I'm surprised it still worked optimally though, it was probably scented, perfume is the first to evaporate. I think modern washing powders dissilves slower than it used too. The boxes of washing powder we had as a child were generally much larger and the measuring scoops too. My modern washing machine washes clean and rises very well, but the basic washing cycle takes a couple of hours at least.

That’s all my mom used and we did wash our dishes with tide!!!! I’m in my 60s and I used it for years until they changed the scent. Then went to gain. That smell lasted so long. Then they changed it , ( it’s not the same) switched to persil. And downey does not smell the same either.

9 minutes in of staring at this washing machine and I just realized I'm just watching someone do laundry and I'm enjoying it. Older 80-90's washing machines were built better and the hum could put me to sleep.

I washed many dishes with Tide (in the 60's) scrubbed walls etc. Remember today's detergent is concentrated hence the lower amount of powder used. I had to use 1.25 cups for my grass stained jean loads back then.
