Yknow, as a die hard kingdom hearts fan myself, I always felt like the first game had a foreboding atmostphere but I could never really understand why. the way you described the night of fate where the wooden sword doesnt do damage to the heartless was spot on, basically exactly how it was for me on my very first playthrough. I feel like a lot of KH fans let the sillyness and confusion of the plot cloud the more nuanced aspects of the games like this element of hopelessness and desperation. anyways amazing video, I subbed!

Im glad we have a new game your talking about. It's really nice to hear some of these in the kiro style.

I know exactly what you mean. I've enjoyed all the Kingdom Hearts games, but there's just something about this first one... A strange feeling that's kind of unnerving. It's difficult to put into words. I was fairly young when I first played it, so I kind of wonder if it's like, nostalgia for my childhood unease at the game's tone, but even now just seeing certain parts of KH1 gives me a unique feeling. The overall game is just put together in a very abstract way.

this,KH1 atmosphere is unmatched, shame nomura failed to understand his own work, i nejoyed 2 but after that it just missed the mark

@@alwaysangry2232 It's a wider scale thing that's been affecting all of Japanese media lately. Anime like Cowboy Bebop have a similar vibe, and ultimately a lot of this vibe in Kingdom Hearts was derived from elements it inherited from Final Fantasy. Over time, a lot of stuff has marched towards this "generic fantasy swordsman action" mold, stuff like Genshin Impact and Fairy Tail, Final Fantasy 13 fell into this too, Sword Art Online was a major push. The whole setup and approach to the fantasy world with magical swordsman trope in BBS is very much in line with this generic format, the other KH games released before it had their own unique flavor to it, that edgy Nomura flair, but it's entirely missing in BBS, it came back a little in DDD, but everything from KH X onward is the generic standard approach.

It's my favorite game in the series, it's got the best integration of the Disney worlds into the plot, best exploration, and the best sense of scale and escalation. There's an undercurrent of dread like you mentioned but then you hit Hollow Bastion and the End of the World and the game oozes this existential dread that your just barely holding back a tide so much larger than yourself.

cool to see a video about a game that isn't sonic or mario. not because the videos about them were bad ofc but because it's refreshing to see something new. on a side note, as someone who has never play kingdom hearts, the story seems interesting and I'd quite like to play it sometime if i get the chance.

Thank you SO MUCH for talking about this subject. I can't really find other people who think the first Kingdom Hearts is legitimately unnerving, and it lends itself well to the story. One thing I'd like to touch on is the soundtrack that plays during the destruction of the Destiny Islands, and later on in random encounters in Traverse Town: Night of Fate. That track legitimately frightened me so much as a kid that I'd actively avoid exploring in Traverse Town, at least until the second visit where the battle theme is replaced by the considerably more high-spirited Hand in Hand. The fact that the battle theme for Traverse Town changes is an excellent indirect way of portraying Sora's own character development, as he grows to fear the Heartless less now that he has the help of his new friends. Another soundtrack that traumatized me was Scherzo di Notte, the battle theme for Hollow Bastion. The first visit to Hollow Bastion starts out very scary due to the fact that you have had your friends, your weapon, and your only way of leaving (the Gummi Ship) taken from you. Every time Scherzo di Notte kicked in, you knew it was time to RUN LIKE HELL, because you stand no chance of fighting the most powerful monsters you've encountered thus far armed with only a toy sword. The series doesn't really get this upsetting again, other than in the first part of Kingdom Hearts 2. I've always been a bit sad that there wasn't as much of this darker tone going forward.

This game made me feel anxiety for the first time when I was a kid, not just fear, full on anxiety, I played this game in similar conditions in my bed and I ended up hiding behind the bed at one point I'll never forget that.

This is an amazing elevator pitch to a guy like me who’s known about kingdom hearts for years & even has all 3 games cuz I got em on sale for $30 but still has yet to play even the first one due to bein scared of how much depth & difficulty the game has but I’m at a point in my life where I need to man up in all sorts of ways so im definitely starting my KH journey early next year

I think the most terrifying section of this game to me is the revisit to Traverse Town. You know that the area is supposed to be safe because you’ve cleared it before and beaten the boss, but something feels off. It feels just the slightest bit wrong.

When I was eight I was terrified I couldn’t spleen good for like 3 weeks but seeing this now it’s awesome

I truly did miss out on an amazing franchise. I grew up in the 90s and even though I did I didn't even play a final fantasy game until way later. My literal only experience with Kingdom hearts was a used DS game that I played through some of the tutorial at the beginning and then the game crashed and never worked again. Ironically it turns out that my family had a GameCube and later on an original Xbox but somehow we never had a PS2 despite it being the highest selling video game console of all time. We also even had a PC that I don't know maybe was up to date for that time which obviously is shit today so we had every platform that was out at the time except the most popular ones and yes completely missed out on Kingdom hearts. I hope there's a way to easily play all the games on modern hardware. I'd imagine there is I've heard there's like re-releases and stuff

Yea the 1st game is creepy. It’s shrouded in mystery. All the secrets, station of awakening, traversing hallow bastion, the Disney villains watching you around a table like the illumanti, & Ansem who is basically the devil or a supernatural entity. It’s KINDA sad the later games couldn’t keep the same tone. As more lore was added it brought more gravity to the games story, regardless of Xehanort’s crazy ass plan 😂

Okay maybe im just different, but I was lucky enough to pick up the game just a couple of days after it released, I was 8 or 9 at the time. Even considering my young age, I really didnt find the game to be scary lol. There absolutely WERE some scary parts, in particular the cave scene with the cloaked Ansem or whoever he was, and the subsequent invasion of the islands, that part absolutely shook me, a few more bits with the dark realm and heartless were fairly spooky, but otherwise I mostly just thought everything felt kinda epic and cool back then. I can certainly see how the uncanny aspects of several worlds could unnerve some people, but KH is definitely not what id consider a horror game. The likes of resident evil and silent hill were the things that scared me back then lol.
