100% agree. If you wont share information of the company the next person who can't afford to lose 30K even 10K for a fence install might have a harder time to recoup losses. These companies need to be outed so the public knows to avoid them.

7:00 Had a similar issue with a company for a deck... They get as much money as they can... prioritize "bigger jobs" and leave you in the dust. Hired a lawyer and had to go after them for services not rendered. It's sad that there are so many sketchy contractors out there. Super refreshing when you find someone who takes pride in their work and gets quality work done in a timely manner

Same EXACT thing happened to me back in 2005. Guy kept asking for the balance even though he wasn’t close to being done and then my now ex wife paid him even though I said not to and he cashed the check at our bank that day and then lied and lied for months and it wasn’t worth the 3-4 grand to keep up anymore. Must be a ton of business to be had if people can do this and get away with it over and over! Lesson learned Strad! Happy holidays! ❤🎉

Hey man. We’ve all been there. EVERY SINGLE TIME I’ve paid money before the service was done. I’ve always got robbed. Paid a contractor to build me a haltree and never got it made. Prepaid for 5 sessions for tattoo removal, got two done with A TON of appointment problems(they already had their money) 2 months later they “close business”. And I have a ton more. These were the last two. NEVER EVER PAY a deposit without putting it in a credit card. Even if you have to lose the cc processing fee, at least it’s insurance if they never follow through. Lesson learned. I’ll never pay a deposit unless with credit card ever again

I feel for you James. Been waiting a month for a septic guy to finish a system install after they didn't even hook up the main sewer line. Just had sewage dumping into the ground. People just can't do what's right. I don't know why you don't want to call people out. They didn't do what's right, and you should protect others from getting scammed.

That's ridiculous! James - you were ripped off. You shouldn't have to pay this much money for a fence and gate. I'm in Utah and definitely wouldn't want to do business with this contractor, let alone, know people who are considering doing business with him. I hope that what's left of the work is completed without further hustle.

Super sorry to hear about the fence. Some contractors suck. I understand not wanting to mess with someone’s livelihood, but if their livelihood is ripping off customers and taking their money then I would argue that it’s hurting those in your community to not notify as many as possible of a fence contractor by the name of David that steals money. At the very least you should report him to Utah DOPL so they can investigate and revoke his license (if you haven’t done so already). I own and run a demolition company in Utah my self and it always hurts to hear people getting ripped off.

How I remember the days when James was calm…. I can usually watch for a few minutes for the cars and then I can’t do it anymore.

Same story started for me in October last year as well. Gave him almost half upfront for materials and whatnot but it has been a struggle over here as well. I did the same thing and was nice because I did get a specific powder coated color and fencing and it was a lot of fencing if I am being honest. It’s been a hassle of people not showing up to over promising and under delivering consistently. Finally got all of the iron that was paid for at least in the past month, awaiting for them to install the double automatic doors. Moral of the story as someone in contracting, most iron workers are like this

It’s wild how much money people will hand over to a stranger, just because they have a business card and a van. I know someone who hired a contractor to build his shop, put $45k (half) down for materials. The “contractor” did this to many people, he then fled to Mexico never to be heard from again. Only proof he had was a receipt. And texts but no one to go after. Just out $45k it’s a shame.

you must put David's name and company out there so that the same thing doesn't happen to the next person who may not be able to recover like you'd recover from a major loss.

Remodeling contractor here, for first time customers who we‘re working with, WITHOUT a general contractor, we usually ask for a 50% payment to assure that we won’t be left holding the bag after purchasing materials. Of course they’re all paid to the business account, and we provide receipts after purchase to show proof that we’re doing our job, we also sign a contract.

Here in Utah the winters can be brutal. Makes it hard to do content, build cars, etcwhen its snows and its below 30 degrees F most of the time. Winters here destroy the cars. Not to mention the roads.

Dude, it's not just you. I run a company out of Cincinnati, and I had a similar situation with a concrete contractor. Ended up costing me about $18,000 out of pocket after not only did he screw up the concrete, but also screwed up the brand new pool that didn't even have water in it that I had the repair. Live and learn!

As a fan who lives and is from Utah for years, im sad you have to leave. I remember one time I saw your Bugatti at the wings and wheels thing, it was so cool. Im still gonna watch you (obviously) but i hope where ever you move you love as much as you loved here. Well, im assuming you loved it here

Had a similar situation with a “reputable” collision shop. Had a minor accident and they fixed my car but they damaged one of their replacement parts while installing it. I took the car back and they order another part and I hear nothing for 3 weeks. I went back and they had no idea what I was talking about and tried to lie and say that I never brought the car back. They ordered another mirror and it came in but they still had to paint it, they said it would be painted that Friday after I was there. I went back in on Monday and they still haven’t painted it. It had taken now over a month to deal with something that shouldn’t have even taken a week.

gotta admit james youre being a generous person. i love how you are giving him so many chances and even when he ghosts you, you dont use your platform to go after him but rather prevent others from experiencing this also

I had someone steal from my family aswell, we just moved into a house and the whole house has this nasty carpet so we hired this guy named James to come rip the carpet up and put new stuff in and he said that we need to pay him half first so we did and then when it came to the day he requested that well all just left the house so he could rip it up easier so my family grabbed all our things and went to a hotel for the day and then about 6 pm that night me and my dad went back to check on him, he was nowhere to be found. He ripped up about half the houses carpet and just ran away, we then dug deeper he apparently had done it to do many people, James was arrested later this year and is in jail slowly paying back everyone that he robbed from. So this just goes make sure you look at everything about the people you hire, stay safe

Similar story has happened to me as well and it was so annoying being lied to. Fortunately I only gave the contractor a small fraction of deposit and he finally did get the job done.

This is for anyone hiring any contractor for any type of work. Sign a contract with scope of work and milestone deadlines. It might seem like a hassle but it will be there to protect you as the homeowner in these sort of cases. You can then sue for breach of contract and get your money back.

My heart sank when he said he’s moving 😢 TheStradMan is so Iconic with Utah. He makes it that much better! We Love you Stradman!!

Jesus, the energy on this guy!

This makes my blood boil inside. Had the same happening to me back in 2020 but way worse. We started some rebuilding during the pandemic and we made every payment we had agreed, but the contractor walked away feb/march 21 and to this day I would be homeless if not by my parents house. And now I´m back there at the age of 53 with wife, kid and two cats. My house has no electricity, no water, no doors, no windows, the roof is in pretty bad shape and that SOB has all my money and with all that happened since then I had to make improvements at my parents house and do not have any more money to finish "the titanic". Well, c’est la vie right ? Good luck with your SOB.

And here I was thinking James was going to say that it was Sophia who robbed him. She's obviously stolen his heart!

TLDR: no one robbed his home, cars, or physical items, but someone ripped him off on a fence deal that was delayed for 1.5 years. Not as big as I thought, but still unfortunate.

As a contractor who's been in business over 30yrs sounds like David has a drug problem and had u write the check to his wife because he's upside down at the bank and dont wanna pay them what he owes but if in his wifes name David can avoid all that sad part alot of shaddy contractors work this way ive seen it so many times while i pull up to finish and fix what them others ruined or didnt complete

Well I can tell you right now I relate to this more then you can imagine. Some guy has been doing this to me for just about 5 months for a transmission job. Keeps getting pushed back over and over again. I’m now down by 2 grand and countless days. It’s so damn annoying

David would have been rocking those new air cinderblocks at the local lake if this was me😂 no way I’m letting somebody steal $7500 for a failed gate set up and then try to scam you over the course of an entire year
