I was on Irish Language TV speaking in Irish / Gaeilge / Gaelic | Clisare

I was on Irish language television in Ireland, speaking in Irish to ‪@BlocTG4‬ for ‪@TG4TV‬ with Micheál O'Ciaraidh. We talked about ‪@facts‬, ‪@TheTRYChannel‬, and also, we spoke about a time where I had to go to the Gardaí (police) because someone was threatening me on Twitter. Watch the full video on the BlocTG4 channel for the rest of that story!

You don't have to tell me why I know why because of the British but it gets deeper I know you might not be allowed to say it on the KZread channel because then they'll try to say you discriminating. Nobody wants to hear the truth that's what people do hide the truth about reality about the way things were in those ancient times. But we are Irish we will always survive no matter where we live on this planet.

I JUST, before watching this, finished watching the episode of “The Crown” where Prince Charles is learning Welsh, and man... I don’t know how to express with ANY language how much I hope Welsh and Irish never die! 😔❤️ I’m an American, and I have gotten in STRIDENT arguments with people about why English must never be made the official national language here, and... I dunno, I just don’t think enough people conceive of how vital language is to the mitigation and balancing act we need to constantly check against monoculture and, frankly, imperialism. I wish you and all fiercely, stubbornly, DEFIANTLY multilingual persons out there the very best! ... and also, I’m jealous af 😉😜 lol

Starting with Jacques Cartier, many of the first European settlers to Canada would have been bilingual, French and Breton, a language similar to Welsh. With the French from Brittany, the English from Ireland, Scotland and Wales, Canada is a very Celtic country.

On one of my trips to Ireland we went to one of the Aran Islands for a day, and at one point we passed a pair of older gentlemen walking down the road speaking in Irish to each other. That was the first time I'd ever heard it, and I didn't find out till later that those islands are one of the places that it's spoken as a primary language. Very cool.

I’m a bit foggy headed, but it was sweet hearing you speak Irish like my dad did when he was taking Irish in Chicago two decades ago. Every once in awhile he would, when he was practicing for class, go through a few phrases when he thought no one could hear them. So I heard it rarely. It’s a shame that today’s Irish have been shamed out of talking about Ireland’s past. I understand how some might see it, but if current resident’s don’t talk about it who will. This is NOT a criticism of anyone who doesn’t with to on You Tube. The public can be nuts. Truly. I knew of hedgerow schools that family members taught Irish in by religious relatives who got my great great grandfather and his sister to the US after my great great great grandfather (Patrick Cush) dropped dead during his wife’s funeral in Emyvale, Monahan. That’s my way of saying that even if we are distant cousins in time, all of you over there are still seen as cousins by us over here. We love learning from you. Watching your videos is a bit mesmerizing because your eyes are so grey. Mine have a good deal of grey in them, with a bit of green, but they are nothing like yours. Be well.

Well done Claire! I'm learning Gaidhlig right now, and it was interesting to watch you speaking Gaeilge, because I'm a little familiar with your mannerisms and I was surprised at how many words I picked up. Ofc most of them were the common ones that the two languages share like "agus" but it was fun to try and hear the similarities. Also with how similar the Gaelic/Gaeilge/Gaidhlig words for Canvas are to Cannabis, there's deffo space for a celtic Willie Nelson to make a tongue-firmly-in-cheek song about setting out to sea with green canvas sails. I definitely don't have the skill to write it and I prefer the whisky to the weed, but I'm sure someone more skilled and experienced than I could pull it off. Edit: And I forgot to say, because I have been on the whisky this evening, that I would very much like a vlog on the subject of your experiences with the Irish Language should you feel up to it, considering you have the footage.

I sub to TG4! I would love to see the summer college vlog♡ I learned Irish first at home, then became all English speaking. Now i am relearning it, but the proper way. When you learn because it's the only thing spoken in the home, you miss out the "rules of grammer". Add to that not using it for 40yrs and I've lost a lot of vocab. But, watching TG4 and subbing to the Irish kid shows (5 per day on YT), it is amazing how much i still can understand!

One of my bucket list things is to learn Irish language, I've mentioned before in your comments how my family is fourth or fifth generation Irish, and my Mom brought us up to respect and appreciate that, and her dream is to be able to go to Ireland before she dies, so she always taught us to know the history of our ancestors and to be proud of our heritage even if we were raised in the USA, so I ended up getting a tattoo with my daughters initials in Gaelic on the back of my neck, and I always promised my mom that one day I would try to learn the language. I truly love watching your videos (all of them lol) but especially the ones where you talk about the history of Ireland and speak the language, it warms my heart every time. Thank you so much for sharing, and I really look forward to your next post 😊❤😊❤

It's a tough language to learn, but I was able to respond to birthday wishes from a cousin who retired from a job in the Department of Culture, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht without looking it up. Very basic, but so happy to pull it off correctly. Certainly not a rendition of Shakespeare.

Hay Clisare, that was real nice I think it’s a good thing to have subtitles for learners like me but I think the subtitles are a bit scratchy and a bit faint, hope you choose another font regards Brad

Of course I knew that Irish have their own language. The Dubliners (the band) often joke about their compatriots not speaking their own language. One of my favorite musicians, Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin (a.k.a. Enya) learned English at school. Anyway, I find it strange that so few Irish speak Gaelige as their first language. I know your complicated history, and that of the neighboring, aggressive island. But my country, Croatia, was also under foreign rule for centuries (most of it under Habsburgs, some under Venice, then Italy, small parts even under Ottoman Turkey). Still, we don't speak German, Hungarian, Italian or Turkish at home or as an official language; we speak Croatian. It is nice to see that Gaelige seems to experience a kind of renaissance after decades of shrinkage of Gaeltacht areas. I certainly hope it will not have to be resurrected artificially, as was the case with Cornish. Keep good work!

I am studying Irish on Duolingo - a little diversion I started during the lockdown, although I already knew a little Scottish Gaelic. This is interesting.

Tá Gaeilge á foghlaim agam! Tháinig mo sheantuismitheoirí go Meiriceá agus níor mhúin siad an teanga do mo sheanmháthair riamh. An-brónach! Chuir sé orm go raibh cuid de m’oidhreacht in easnamh ...I hope I did that okay, I’m not quite fluent but I’ve been learning bit by bit for 2 1/2 years on Duolingo and watching Irish soaps on KZread. Lots of love from the USA! ♥️

As an American learning Irish, I'm finding Duolingo kinda deceptive in how good I feel about my learning it. also, I started watching Outlander which has Gaelic in it apparently, thought in a Scots dialect so i've only been able to under stand 2 words "God" & "And"

But it's good that you teach people how to speak in the Gaelic language of course there are other Gaelic languages like Scotland Welch which is totally a little different than the Irish but it's some sort of Celtic language that are great ancestors spoke. But no I don't never believe that the Irish should give up their national language which is Gaelic and always will be so keep teaching it to them young people out there don't never give up young Lessie, educate the mind of a young people rehabilitate them young people. You are strong in your Irish tough you can take a punch and it won't knock you down keep up the good work God bless you and have a Merry Christmas.

So, after watching this video, I became fascinated with getting more into my Irish roots. I even inspired me to start learning Gaeilge. I am still very early in the learning process, but found a wonderful tool to help called Duolingo. I only bring this up, because as an advocate for Gaeilge, you may consider reaching out to them to get a sponsorship. I don't know of many other language learning platforms that teach that language. Just a thought/suggestion. So, go raibh maith agat!

@@Clisare I have found their platform to be very easy. I took 3 year's of German in high-school and don't remember much after 20-years of not using it. I tried to relearn with Rosetta Stone and it felt like it took too long and didn't really keep me interested. But I've been enjoying learning Gaeilge so far. I don't mind the ads though, for the free version. Even without going pro, it seems like a much easier platform to follow. I'm still early, only in the first section. But I'll keep an eye out for the curse words.

My Irish is a broken since I obviously never get to use it in real life, so this is about the only place i get to experience it. I would love if more youtubers like you or FAH etc etc did some more Irish language stuff. bíodh lá deas agat !

It's hard on the eyes. Please I'm irish too and I'm only able to catch the odd phrase I can't imagine what it's like for everyone else. It's at it's worse when you're in bright lighting I think, putting a black bubble behind it would probably help somewhat if you reallllly wanted to keep it, I just don't see much point to that to be truly honest with you. The whole point of subtitles is to be clear and easy to read for everyone! Someone with dyslexia or even just general vision problems would likely struggle to read yours because of how almost "cursive?" it is. For subtitles it is ALWAYS practicality over prettiness.
