    Used to set crab pots this way back in the 70’s. Three or four in a string with a heavy weight in between the pots, running 90 degrees to the bank. This was for private fishing & eating. Unfortunately the legislation has stopped this procedure & have to use floats & proper marking on pots & floats. Unfortunately I haven’t been crabbing for eons. You’ve got bloody good pot full of spider crabs 🦀. We used to chase big mud crabs, beautiful eating & have become an expensive dish in restaurants. Damn Damn Damn. 😢😂😂🇦🇺

    They still run lines of pots here The gear also has to be marked with licence / reg number or boat name. The gear can be removed if not. I watch a few other youtubers catching mud crab, its interesting the way they tie the claws up.

    @@Trojwaterman - Yeah, the tying stops them messing one and other up. Also stops them from getting hold of the stray finger or toe. They sure can cause pain, I saw one latch on to my Dads’ fingers or thumb when I was a boy. He had to use an oar rollick to smash the claw. It had thrown the claw & left it hanging off dad. 🦀😖😖🇦🇺

    Does living/working next to the sea rust your vehicle's if so do you hose them with fresh water after work?.I have seen a small boat that had cage/nets to hang over the non working side (starboard on your boat ) that kept catches from getting under foot or tangled in gear.just a suggestion as it might keep the deck clear 👍

  • @Trojwaterman

    @Trojwaterman

    Yes the saltwater is terrible for the cars the best thing is drive real slow as not to spray it up from the wheels. Plus I spray a mix of oil and floor wax under the vehicle which hardens and forms a waterproof barrier.

    I used to fish for them from the shore in a few places ( Tides are a bit fast from boat) Some years back we lost the 12 mile limit for a time and hundreds of foreign trawlers descended on the Island. Since then there have been very few and I have not caught any on rod only a few 3lb to 5lb fish while diving. Also now the seas are warming, some species seem to be moving North and others like breams tuna octopus and abalone are on the increase.

  • @Trojwaterman

    @Trojwaterman

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes we do get some brown crab but they have been declining over the years. The spider crab is sweeter than the brown crab and are at their best now. Later on they will breed and molt on mass and will not be good eating as the meat will become wet and mushy so they are seasonal crab.

    @@Trojwaterman thats understandable. Due to tide, I only have a very short window to haul pots, so every minute counts. I wish I had the ground you have, seems like plenty of shellfish, and it would be lovely not having 15kg pots and 16kg anchors to keep them in position, and they still do move in good tides

  • @Trojwaterman

    @Trojwaterman

    Жыл бұрын

    I know what you mean these ones weigh 15 to 20kg for when we push them deep. I use a thinner rope and smaller buoys to cut the tide but even then the Atlantic swell that rolls in here can pretty much move anything on the big tides.
