Recounting your own, individual experiences, or the evidencing the experience of a single person (even if it’s yourself) doesn’t disprove a consistently exhibited pattern or trend amongst many people. Just because you’re an exception, doesn’t mean it’s irregular or uncommon. Human’s are social animals. In many cases, it’s favourable and advantageous for people to “fit in” to whatever social constructs and habitats they find themselves amidst. To an extent it’s absolutely beneficial to fit in, and to be integrated successfully into society. I have friends from across the globe, some of which are multilingual, and they all have an uncanny ability to gradually mimic the dialect of the region they’re in. They have told me and recounted how their accent has changed and adapted to each country they’ve lived in, and I believe them to be trustworthy sources. I genuinely hypothesise that’s in some sort of survivalist behaviour or adaptation. She probably isn’t even aware she’s doing it 😂. Anyways, like I said, not trying to belittle your experience. I’m genuinely just curious about why it occurs, because I’ve seen it happen in multiple instances. It’s even common for British footballers to speak with a mild accent when they move abroad, even if they don’t speak the language 😂. See Steve McClaren at Ajax for reference, lol.
