‘I Was Groomed Into Joining ISIS When I Was A Teen’ | This Morning

Ойын-сауық

She was the ISIS recruit nicknamed ‘The Towie Jihadi’, after Tareena Shakil from Birmingham travelled to Syria to join the Islamic State group. She was jailed in 2016 when she returned to the UK after three months with IS. But now, after completing a de-radicalisation programme, Tareena says she is "ashamed" of her actions and "lives with the consequences every day". Now released from prison, she joins us in the studio as she reveals her plans to travel once again to Syria to help notorious former convert Shamima Begum.

I really think that they need to treat these women as victims of a cult. The way they were groomed online, most of the women had risk factors even if they grew up in the West. The whole experience really reminds me of so many cult stories that I have heard. I am not saying that those involved of criminal activity should not be prosecuted or repay society in some way, but I think that given the youth of so many of them and their stories, they are as much victims of ISIS as anyone. Think of how many times many of them were forced to marry again and again. They were baby machines. It was a horrific experience and I think that we should at least include the cultish aspects of ISIS in their evaluations, treatment, and consequences.

Alot of people calling it out saying how is it grooming. Maybe in western culture it's so easy to define your individualism and set yourself apart.... in Islam it is definitely not like that even the way you brought up its completely different, whether secular or religious there is a tie to Islam. So when you start to be part of a community that's more radical and these people are telling you to be more involved getting you emotionally riled up without the facts of a situation, coax them to come to a country that they know nothing of, they trust them because it's the fight for Islam, why would my brothers and sisters would want to hurt me? We follow the same faith. Also look up "grooming", it includes young person as well.

As a British Muslim born in a liberal yet cultural family, you know what is right and wrong. There is a plethora of information and guidance of Islam of what is the correct path than ever before. There are countless positive Muslim role models around the globe who don’t propagate Jihad. Islam is a peaceful way of life for those of understanding and focuses on healing yourself by submitting to Allah not by blowing yourself and others up. The Quran & Sunnah demonstrate that. May Allah swt guide her and others and us all ameen

Very beautifully and eloquently put. I just wish all of the narrowly minded xenophobic non Muslim British individuals saw it in this light. The truth of healing and peaceful way of life through faith in Islam. Although I am slowly learning acceptance and understanding I can't spread goodness everywhere in the world. I have the utmost respect for people of faith. I have a history of vulnerability from family neglect and other aspects of British society resulting in multiple complex trauma. However, I have very high personal values of humanity, empathy and human equality. Although in an unstable upbringing and life I could not bring myself join an extreme ideology. Some people due to psychology individual differences are more easily persuaded or vulnerable or brainwashed to go down the wrong path. I can't judge a person because I haven't lived their life experiences or mental states to truly understand what got them to such a dark place. Perhaps in this case they can ask for tawbah and that would be a direct matter between them and Allah swt. However, I am a true believer that British officials have let the youth and children down far too often. In the case of Shamima Begum, Britain let 3 young teenagers board a flight to Turkey - which is well known to facilitate or look the other way at these things. Teenagers obviously Muslim, and generally speaking whose parents tend to be stricter and wouldn't allow that. So something dodgy was going on. They should have been stopped at the airport, interrogated with an adult present, and security and counterterrorism police called. Put to an intense deep rooted De-radicalisation programme and counselling. It is not Syria's or another country's responsibility. Born in Britain and / or Nationality of Britain - Britain's responsibility. We harbour far more dangerous criminals in the U.K. and look the other way at them. Corruption is everywhere. These girls / women haven't physically murdered or committed worse to someone. I apologise for my very long winded response - I just find you and a small minority of people on here are the only decent ones. I send you blessings and peace!

I'd say most people would be pretty dead inside and lost. No matter what way she apologises let's face it she's the wrong skin colour and the laws used to strip her of her citizenship is racist. If that was a Caucasian young teen would they they looking for ancestry in Europe to palm them off to? I doubt it. People wrote that girl off because she didn't fit the aesthetic!

The negative comments against her are appalling! If you've never been an emotionally vulnerable and socially isolated naive teenager, caught in a perfect storm of factors including grooming that lead you down path which you now deeply regret, you should probably reserve some modest silence. And what kind of society do you espouse where someone admits their wrong, serves time, does the necessary programs and now wants to offer help to ensure others don't do the same, and you still hold the past against them? Oh yes, contemporary British society. God, I miss the generation of my grand-parents when there was something called decency and forgiveness.

She didn't join ISIS to go and "kill non-believers". She drowned herself in intense religiosity to overcome emotional distress, the kind of religiosity that can easily slide into ultra conservative fanaticism. ISIS happened to take advantage of that situation and groomed her. Most of the violence they were committing was usually explained to these kids as "fabricated western propaganda" and naive teenagers are hardly the type to do investigative journalism to double check.

I'm surprised they sent her to prison. She was only there for 8 weeks. She clearly realized almost immediately that she had made a mistake. They didn't leave because they wanted to join a terrorist group they joined because of the promise of a happy life.
