    One of the reasons that Jordan Rudess (keyboards) was courted by Dream Theater in the 90's was because he was so incredibly creative on the keyboards... a graduate of Jullliard School, Rudess was a top session musician since the 80's, and an accomplished pianist and composer. Since joining Dream Theater, Rudess has also incorporated samples, programming and various sound effects w/ electronic devices. He has also recorded instrumental solo records. Kevin Moore was Dream Theater's original keyboardist, but he quit in 1994 (he was unwilling to tour... he was also apparently not very willing to compromise on the music he wrote) ... Derek Sherinian (keyboards) joined from 1994 to 1998, because Jordan Rudess had turned down an offer to join the band. In 1997, Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) got an opportunity to jam w/ Tony Levin (bass) who is legendary for his work w/ Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, etc... Jordan Rudess (keyboards) also signed on, and that became Liquid Tension Experiment. 2 albums of instrumental tracks were released in 1998 and 1999 and were successful (A 3rd album was recently recorded in the pandemic)... The band was more confident as they had worked together and created new music... so they asked Rudess to join Dream Theater in 1999, and he accepted (Derek Sherinian was let go, but he stayed friendly w/ the band and has been working w/ Mike Portnoy recently). A lot of what u hear on Dream Theater records is the musical partnership that John Petrucci (guitar) has w/ Jordan Rudess... the 2 musicians share a very symbiotic bond when it comes to playing together... feeding off each other and putting Dream Theater songs together. John Myung (bass) is also a vital part of creating the music - he adds his effects and grooves on a 6-string bass... and then there is Mike Mangini (drums) who adds his mathematical beats to the rhythms. A lot of DT fans rag on James LaBrie (vocals), but he is the voice of Dream Theater, and he does contribute the vocal melodies to the music they compose... John Petrucci writes a bulk of lyrics, but he depends of LaBrie to incorporate those lyrics into the songs.

    DT is probably the most skilled group of musicians ever formed. I can think of so few that you could make a debate for that title (maybe Weather Report and The Eagles come to mind). Every member that plays an instrument is a master at their craft and at music theory in general.

    What sounds like a growing vocal presence is a mellotron program on one of Jordan's keyboards. The mellotron was a huge keyboard instrument in the 60s and 70s, particularly for progressive rock like Genesis and Yes. It consisted of a keyboard in which the stroke of a key triggered a pre-recorded tape to run, offering sounds so real that it became a preeminent instrument for many years. The strings, choirs and orchestral instruments were legendary. The instrument, itself, is notorious for it's fragility when moved, for it's tapes to break or heat up and go out of tune. It was common for many touring bands to have two or three mellotrons touring with them in case of failure. They were almost irreparable on the road. Today, there are digital samples of the mellotron which are much more reliable.

    Bro, I'm a big Dream Theater fans from South East Asia, can i request The Great Debate song from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Its a 46 and 2 with steriod! 😅

  • @prefono

    @prefono

    Жыл бұрын

    It would be true if the songs were women. Steroids would make her bigger, stronger, more defined and more muscular… But those are not the things I look for in a woman. 46&2 is a practically perfect woman. The Great Debate is her version of her on steroids: she has all these beautiful qualities, but she's more fake, awkward, less feminine and has a lot of pimples and hair that she could have avoided. This is my general opinion when someone compares the two bands. D.T. are exceptional in many things including technique, but being all virtuosos they tend to overdo it a bit and in the end what comes out is almost never as good as it could have been. TOOL instead do exactly what they have to do without necessarily showing off and the result is always and only perfection.
