    You should make this prayer to the people who closed their noses when I enter a bus, or shout at the driver when they want to pick a Nigerian, or tell them they have body odor, or a host of other things too long to mention. I wasn't trying to say something helpful. I was trying to say something that happened. I am not burning bridges, I have friends in SVG. If you can't understand that some places have more people who don't like certain people than other places, I can't help you understand English. Don't be too sensitive. Just read it and go.

I'd recommend going back to the newspaper and reading all over again so you can see clearly what was written. In general, I'd refrain from commenting on random people's videos. At least Google my name or post some proof. 🤦🏽‍♀ Anyway, have a nice life and thanks for increasing my video engagement.

    It's an inside joke for Africans. We usually refer to Tier 1 countries or first world countries as "abroad" while the rest are just overseas, following the literal meaning of the word, "over the seas". We say it to mean that we're not in America or living large, we're just outside our home country.

  • @BelemaRonabere

    Because tranquility ≠ land of birth. It's like telling someone who changed jobs to find a better job but doesn't like the new job that he should just go back to the old job. Or someone who having issues with his new girlfriend to go back to the old one. There's a reason he left. It just means that they should find a more conducive job or a more compatible girlfriend. Hope this clarifies why the statement "go back to where you came from" is out of place in conversations about migration. If we 100% liked where we came from, we would not be here in the first place.

It happens in every country. Nothing special there. And when you say "refrain from those videos?", I don't know what to make of it. I should lie? I shouldn't talk about my experience? I shouldn't explain the truth about my experience? I'm not sure what you mean. Let's leave SVG out of this matter. If an SVG person goes to Nigeria and gets robbed, how would you recommend that they narrate their experience? Should they not say that they were robbed? Whatever your answer is, please apply to my situation and understand that if someone cannot apply reasoning to understand that an experience from one person is not the identity of the nation, then I don't really want to be in conversation with such a person. If a person is the kind of person that believes that one experience means that I hate the country, then I don't want to be around you because the person does not have critical thinking skills. • @BelemaRonabere

    @BelemaRonabere

    Жыл бұрын

    I used an incorrect term. Technically, the correct word is prejudice. And yes, I did experience a level of prejudice because I was Nigerian. There may be prejudice in Barbados. I don't believe there's any country 100% devoid of it. However, comparing the same time frame, I have experienced little to no prejudice so far. In SVG, the prejudice I experienced ranges from: - people coming down from a bus because I was seated inside - people refusing to rent me a house once they heard my accent - landlords doubling rent once they heard my name or accent - people assuming I was a thief/scammer when they heard I was from Nigeria - snide remarks on seeing me in public transportation because they could tell I was Nigerian. The list goes on and on. That being said, I want to stress that it was rather "mild" and never to the point where I felt unsafe. I also only experienced it from the older generation, and from a very small percentage of people. Nevertheless, it did exist and was quite unpleasant each time it happened. The assumption that because we're all the same skin color means that there aren't a few bad eggs incorrect. Even though we're all dark-skinned, I am approached first as a Nigerian before anything else wherever I go. That's neither here nor there. I also do not mind. It is what it is. It's usually the response on finding out I'm Nigerian that matters. In 98% of situations, people are excited to learn about Africa, where I'm from, etc. People ask me about Nigerian food, music, and movies. Others curse at me, and complain that these dirty smelling scammers have come again to fill up the country lol. So, yes. I did experience some prejudice

    @@BelemaRonabere The big problem is West is hard to accept "Nigerians" and any body from west /west-cenral africa are ALL label as Nigerians. I seen that happen with my Africana exWife who is Guineana and the same with my Cameroonian girlfriend as soon as you say, these countries and if you say near Nigeria, you are look down as being a Nigerian. I call it Western ignorance.

    You can't both ask a question and emphasize that you already know the answer. The volcano is not the reason I said I experienced racism (more accurately called prejudice). Volcano was just like the pandemic. Shocking. Had nothing to do with SVG. As for my experiences, it ranges from increased rent prices, stereotypes, refusal of service, people coming down from a bus because a Nigerian entered, nasty comments, etc etc. All in all, as with every country, it is not ALL SVG citizens. Nevertheless, I did not expect that I would live in a predominantly dark skinned country and experience such comments. I remember being excited to come over because I thought "these people look like me". But a reasonable number of people did not think so. If most people were white or light skinned, it would have been sort of expected. But to come to a place that looked and felt like home and have people behave the way they did was truly surprising.

    @@BelemaRonabere I didn't see the full video only the short. From the short I saw I gathered that you were saying we were racists but I now see it's more of a miscommunication. You experienced social prejudice ( not racism). However I acknowledge that your experiences were nothing short of sad and unfortunate and I wish you didn't have to experience that in my country.

    @@FAMD4SH Nigerians tend to move to a new country for the first time and make the rookie mistake of converting every expense into naira, thinking WOW THIS IS SO EXPENSIVE. That’s why I said don’t compare it to Nigeria. Just take one day at a time and focus on what you’re there for, which is school.
