I think it’s interesting that this version of the song has some pretty sad undertones to it, as opposed to the reprise’s more overt somberness. The narrator understands that it’s very likely he won’t survive, but still wants to be a cavalryman regardless.

Some love our Republic so much, they’re willing to die for her. In 2021 I see a lot of hate for Old Glory. Commies Aren’t Cool. But they’re here, an in a much greater number than 231 guys who think they’re Nazis and 2,000 Inbred Klansmen. They’re being indoctrinated at Public Schools and College Campuses, taught to hate America, Our Accomplishments, even their own race. I think S/Sgt E.S. Tankersley would have liked this song. At the age of 15 he ran away from home to join the 7th Cavalry prior to WWII. He left the Cavalry to become an original member of the First Special Service Force (the Devil's Brigade) His last ride was on a green broke horse that he had just shod. (his back had been broken and fused together) With nothing but the halter, he mounted military style and proceeded to gallop the horse up and down the gravel road. His comment; "There's nothing like a horse to make a man feel alive."

Listening to this song for perhaps the 1000th time, and will still never forget how I stumbled on this gem, back in the xbox 360 days, was on world of tanks, and was in game chat, playing on west field and some random kid in a hellcat, starts blasting this and does a charge over the hill, spotted the entire enemy team and died instantly, while his death was a bit lame, the song left a good enough impression that I messaged him asking about it, fast forward 5+ years later, and it's still on my music Playlist, along with several other of Corb's songs, and every time I hear it, it reminds me of this odd but nice memory

I’m gonna keep it real, I think this version is sadder than the reprise. The reprise is direct with its sorrow, but this one falls into a special place. It has its upbeat and somewhat happy tone, but the lyrics tell a different story. The narrator knows he’s most likely going to die, but he’s going with this enthusiasm anyways. The way that I see it, this is a young man ignorant to what he’s actually getting into, the reprise is that man after he’s lost that confidence.

I agree. Depicting war as strickly sad and things definitely has it's place. But the great part of this is the upbeat I took as being the way we like to represent the military as this great adventure and battle being amazing action. When in reality at the end the man has died and is talking about his own funeral.

At the beginning of the war, thousands were signing up daily to go off and fight in the war for the glory of their homeland. The south had multiple occasions where regiments had to be left home for a while, or sent hundreds of miles to another state because the corps in the local area literally didn’t have room for another regiment. However the lyrics hint at what the experience would actually turn into

This is a classic tune! It's the exact song (with different words) as Stan Rogers' song "Idiot". The theme is exactly the same, but a different setting. I mean the music/melody is exactly the same. It's an old Scottish folk song with different works. And the video is in this version is excellent! On a related note, I just picked up a restored 1859 McClellan saddle that fits my mustang like a glove! ;D

1st Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, Iraq 2017. We left our horses behind for tanks and humvees; but we still keep to the old ways, and we still earn our spurs. Death Before Dismount 💪.

We don't have horses anymore. But we do have a bunch of neat tanks and helicopters. And we eat a lot of dirt.

This former American Cavalryman with a Canadian wife, loves this track. All the best to my Canadian Brothers & Sisters-in-Arms. Due to my wife, I may be one of the few Americans who knows what PPCLI is. You all stay safe!
