The recorded version of Brothers in Arms is great. But it is outclassed by a live version, the one that Dire Straits played during the 'Music for Mandela' concert in 1988. This is a song sung from the point of view of a dying soldier saying goodbye to his comrades, its devastatingly sad and beautiful.

War is hell! Nobody knows this better than a soldier. That's why you will find that the greatest advocates of peace are ex-soldiers.

I note your comment about Knofler's guitar work. He's playing a Gibson "Les Paul ". Probably the best electric guitar ever made and it's in the hands of a master. We are blessed.

Just my take, but I see this song as a progression of understanding by the subject. It starts with him leaving his home to fight a war with people presumably from other parts of his country. They form a bond and become a band of brothers. To the point of "In the fear and alarm, you did not desert me my brothers in arms." As the song progresses is the realization that we have just this one world, but we live in different ones. Finally, as he is presumably dying, he realizes that they're all brothers in arms, including those they are fighting and we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms.

Used at many former UK 🇬🇧 service personnels funeral services. It holds a special place in the hearts of those of us that have served. " now the sun's gone to hell, and the moon's riding high, let me bid you farewell, every man has to die." Some of the most heart rending & poignant words written in a song. Well done sir, you nailed this spot on, a young man beyond his years. 👌

In down-town Haifa, Israel, just near the port, there is a meticously maintained cemetery for Commonwealth solders. Everytime I catch a glimps of the Cemetery, as I pass by, my heart cries out for their sacrifice. I litraly need a moment to recompose myself. Albeit, the Jewish pioneers had many issues with the then British Mandatory rule in Palestina, but one can't dismiss the huge possitive influence the British Empire had for the better, between 1918 to 1948. Some of out current Laws in Israel in 2024, are unchanged Mandatory Laws from the British Empire. It might be contravertial to some Israeli, but the British Empire, and their solders, had a lasting positive contribution to spreading and enforcing DECENT civilized values. A salute to all British and Commonwealth Armed Forces.

You are right - it is most always a war for the rich, fought by ordinary people. And those soldiers are the only ones that can see the enemy for what they are - brothers in arms. Makes me cry every time.

Mark Knopfler is a musical genius. This was top selling album of 1985. Thank you for bringing it to the attention of today’s audience

Sorry to break your flow but i'm sure most of us here are either "boomers" or their children ( like I am, born early 80's). I might be pessimistic but today's audience wouldn't care at least as whole. I'm not counting the occasional young people who's into older music

there's an argument to be made that this is the greatest guitar song of all time. so powerful and beautiful, not as flashy as the shredders but with just a handful of notes that guitar can make you cry, just as Mark makes the guitar cry, expressing the emotion of the dying soldier in the song. he can't and doesn't try to convey that wailing emotion with his vocal cords, but I can't think of another song that has a guitar line this powerful, it's pure magic.

So nice to hear a young mind talk sense regards war. Dire Straits were one of the best ever bands to come out of the UK in my opinion Mark is one of the best guitarist's all all time.

I've listened to this song since it was first released and the last verse still puts a lump in my throat.

You should never be exposed to a new song with the live version. Studio is always better to start

This is probably their best. When they were at their very best.

Written by Mark Knopfler referencing the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina, but of course it can refer to any conflict. Some of the scenes used are from the First World War, for example. The process itself is called rotoscoping, where a drawing is made over a piece of original film - very effective, as you can see.

I had a VCR back in the '90s with a feature that could produce that effect on a video as it played.

Dire Sraits were a fantastic band and Mark Knopfler one of the greatest guitarists ever. To see them at their best watch "Sultans of Swing" from Alchemy Live.....you will be amazed!

Best Guitarist is Mike Oldfield, not Knopfler or Clapton. No one can play Riffs from Oldfield- He plays extrem komplex- no one can reach the Perfektion like him. But Knopfler is a very good Player- but Oldfield is much more higher

I loved Dire Straits growing up but this song has always been my favorite as sad as it is

Telegraph Road...a true masterpiece.

Even though Mark stopped touring he is still writing and recording. Dire Straits is one of my favorite bands of all time and Mark one of the greatest guitarists. He was a protégé of and mentored by Chet Atkins

A song written about the Falklands war and a British soldier called Lieutenant Lawrence of the Scots Guards who was shot and lost 42% of his brain on Mount Tumbledown by an Argentinian sniper as the Argentinians retreated, however its also about the futility of all wars and we are all brothers in arms doing things we dont really want to do but feel we have to as good citizens to our countries but have such heavy prices to pay on both sides!!..😢

You nailed it. The narrator doesn't make it. Wars are terrible. -We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms. Lyrics are great.

The major point of the song is that, in the end, the dyîng soldier realizes and acknowledges that the soldiers on both sides are his brothers in arms. On both sides, those that fight and dîe are young men from the valleys and the farms of their home countries. Soldiers, by and large, have more in common than differences, and on both sides, they are sent to fight and die as the human bullets of the soulless power class who aways remain beyond harm's way

One of the most artistic music videos I ever saw. Unlike lots of them it really elevates the experience of hearing the song. It won a Grammy for Best Music Video.

The song also comments on the strange closeness of enemies on the field of battle..."And I guess we were fools to make war on our brothers in arms"...Soldiers don't get to make the decisions on who they are sent to kill, mostly old men do that and most of them have never been in combat, or near to combat. Even when soldiers are deadly enemies in a battle, they share an experience and a wounding that the rest of us never can, and when the battle is long forgotten they still share this brotherhood.

If you want to hear another powerful song about war you should listen to a song by an Australian songwriter, Eric Bogle. The song is "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" It's about a battle in World War One. To understand the song you'll need the know that Waltzing Matilda is the unofficial national album of Australia. This song is the equal of Brothers in Arms in many ways. This song needs more air play world wide.

I appreciate your point of view as a young American man. Most wars involving your country have been distant ones, so therefore are all about governments sending soldiers to fight meaningless battles. This song was written about the Falklands war, which was very personal to the British Falkland Islanders who had their home invaded by a foreign power. War is always a tragedy but it's not always for nothing

Telegraph Road is a great song to hear Mr. K. guitar playing as well as a well written song. Keep up the good job.

Late to the party here, but when it comes to songs about war you should check Sabaton out. ”En livstid i krig” live from Gothenburg is one place to start, and remember to turn the subtitles on. If you want english instead, you can go for ”Christmas truce” or ”No bullets fly”. It’s a swedish band dedicated to sing about historic events without taking sides politically.

Yours is about the most thoughtful and understanding reaction I’ve seen of this. Per some other comments, it was originally about the Falklands War. There’s a video of that with some live footage. Another I’ve seen is about war in general. In one scene there’s a WW2 German soldier, not a Nazi but just another guy forced to fight. He’s hugging and laughing with his son about 12 years old. They did the song at the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday concert. It was so popular in South Africa that the authorities asked him who should get the royalties. He said “Amnesia International.” They were banned from performing there after that. I believe South Africa has improved their racial problem since then. I know you would appreciate the video Wrong Side Of Heaven by Five Finger Death Punch. It’s about problems closer to home. Trust me. A lot of people like me would appreciate your take on it.

im going around clarifying the meaning of the song. lots say its the experience of a particular soldier, when its all soldiers. the severe pain, mentally and physically, is everlasting. the trauma. the treatment they recieve when theyre civvies is horrible

The real meaning of sacrifice? That would mean the song is gloryfying people dying for their country. Which it is NOT! It sort of talks about the relationship between soldiers and the madness of war, but ends with the notion that we are all "brothers" and that it is stupid killing one another as long as we don't recognize we all live in/share this this one world.

Tidy reaction MDreeezy. This was primarilly written about "The Falklands Conflict" in 1982. I've drunk with DS's drummer, he lived 3 villages away from me. Mark has updated for several times since.

The significance of the sea in this video is that they had to overcome the Argentinean navy before being able to land on the Falkland islands, to liberate the people from the Argentinians, who had invaded the islands without warning.

Those old men you see gray haired and bent, they were young men with dreams.

I always thought that one of Thier most underrated songs was, a man's to big, it's about a man's confession on his death bed and the man is God, the lyrics great and really tell a story of this man's life, it's not all good, thank you.

Love this song. Have you listened to Pink Floyd, "Comfortably Numb" from the Pulse (live) album. It's epic. You won't be disappointed even if you've listened to the album version. This is better.
