Sultans of Swing was recorded in 1980 over 45 years ago. I can still listen to this 24/7! Love the drummer. He's the best!

Has to be one of the best, if not the best, live performances ever in the history of music...of any genre.

Knopfler’s style is so smooth and effortless. It’s intense, yet delicate. He’s definitely one of the greats.

Almost no one does finger picking lead guitar. Eddie Van Halen did it at times but mostly all use a pick. His smoother tone comes from the softer sound of the fingers on the strings. Just a great style.

Do yourself a favour and listen to the entire concert performance at least once. Alchemy Live is a musical masterpiece of performance, composition, spirit. Even if you don't listen on here, it's something you'd want to listen to at least once. Telegraph Road, for instance, is just off this planet, indescribable. There are probably a few like that on that album really... ❤😊

I just love it when Mark looks into the camera and smiles as if what he's doing is nothing at all. He's completely ridiculous not using a pick and another thing, apparently he's LEFT HANDED. He's a genius songwriter, performer/storyteller and God bless him. 🙋‍♂

The most nonchalant kickass guitar player. He is stupidly talented and confident.

The guy is hardcore. He’s pulling off a red blazer, red shoes with white tennis wrist bands and head band…while killing that guitar.

Now "Telegraph Road" from the same concert is a must.

Terry Williams on drums is going off, as his dad was in the audience that night, so Terry really gave it some stick. Mark Is a pure finger picker, no plectrum required. You know a Knopfler guitar piece as soon as you hear it, he is unique in the rock world.

Never gets old. One of the true greats. I was at their concert in Chicago 1985. 2 hours plus of real music, real instruments, brilliant musicianship and vocals. Great concert!

The whole concert "ALCHEMY LIVE" is MONSTRUOUS, ridiculous so much they're good! The sound production, is better that today😂The melodies, rythms, ecerything is fantastic! It's phenomenal, like Led Zeppelin live at the Madison Square Garden 1973, Jimi Hendrix live at Woodstock or with the band of gypsies, etc... You can't explain why it's so perfect! It's a kind of magic like Queen said😂Apparently, your followers tell you to watch great performances!👍 Peace from France, my cousin of Canada😂✌️👍

The drummer, Terry Williams, had his father in the audience for the first time and he was a little hyped, thus the slightly faster pace. You can see on Mark's face he was amused, and they all had no choice but to keep up. I have the concert on disc and it is awesome. 🏕 My introduction to Dire Straits was the album Communique. 1983 A friend brought the CD along camping. It was late, and we were really tired from the days 🧗‍♀️ rock climbing up at Devil's Lake in Wisconsin, with a few cold beers 🍻 and a few shots of Jack Daniels🥃... We sat around the dying fire, just staring at the undulating glow of the coals. The sky was full of stars that night, no moon. It was magical alright, I felt like I was under a spell. Communique is the perfect album for a quiet dark place of comfort. My late-husband and I got to see them once, 1985 in Milwaukee during their Brothers in Arms tour. It was the same friend who had brought the CD camping that scored tickets for the concert. Both gone now. My husband at 48 and our friend at 55, both from heart attacks. I imagine they're having one helluva time on the other side and I am jealous. ❤

I think his dad was there, possibly for the first time with him in Dire Straits, pretty sure he saw him play in other bands previously(MAN, Rockpile etc) Terry always played like that!

Dire Straits, I mean Mark Knopfler, has another talent which is very very rare in music. He just doesn't play the guitar, he makes the guitar speak and tell you a story which you cannot put in words but live it. That's what it makes this music fell like magic.

He's not using a thumb pick he's not using a finger pick he's using all of his fingers on his right hand and coordinating with the fingers on his left hand. He doesn't use guitar picks he picks with his fingers picked with his fingers this is from the 1970s.

All true, EXCEPT.. this was filmed in 1983, not the 70's.

Drummer was 'on fire' and Mark displayed his wizardry on guitar. Everyone else was just incredible also - legendary!

I appreciate your eloquent commentary on where music has gone. It is wonderful that you can introduce such talented and genuine musicians to your generation. You are so right in saying how music can have a profound affect on your psyche. Dire Straights was one of the best. If you want to explore more great live performance bands check out the Grateful Dead. An insane amount of live concerts to choose from.

I'm a reaction addict. I wish there was a database of the songs where there is just a particular "best version" for reactors. There are tons of songs where it doesn't matter. But THIS is one where THIS Alchemy Live one is absolutely the best one. I watch at least 2 hours of reactions every single night. I'm sure that if I checkd out your first reaction to this, that I didn't bother watching after I realized it was the "wrong" one. I watch so many reactions, that I don't have time to watch ones that will disappoint me. So I'm SO glad you did this one. Love you so much. You are one of the reactors that I've subscribed to. I can honestly say, I have never heard a drummer go off like this guy , you have to keep time for the band , and he constantly fills and fills and fills Fan frickin tastic

The 1978 studio version of "Sultans of Swing" you reacted to before was on Dire Straits first album and was a huge hit single that launched the band's career. This 1983 concert features almost completely different personnel from the 1978 original band. Drummer Terry Williams in particular, and the addition of an additional keyboard player are total upgrades.

I will never forget this band. So talented.

Alchemy Dire Straits live is one my favourite albums, definitely my favourite Dire Straits album

This has to be one of the best performances ever and one that I never get tired of watching as every time I watch it I see something different in it that I never spotted before. MDreezy you have done a great job letting the video play to the end before you commented. Unlike some who pause the video 2 or more times to comment, so well done and keep up the good work.

Somewhere along the line in the mid-90s music became corrupted IMO. It became more about the glorification of the ego, "The self "and less emphasis on the band or the music . Man I miss the 70s and 80s ...🤟

It became too easy to make music that would shift enough units to turn a profit, without any artistry involved.

Mark just auctioned off a lot of his famous guitars at Sotherby's for charity. There is an interview by him on UTube before the auction started. He is now 74, very humble and funny and has a new album coming out in April.

I listened to this version for the first time a couple of month ago. Wasn't a Dire Straits fan when I clicked on the video but I was when it ended. Since then I have listened to all their albums and there are so many good songs. Great reaction I hope you will react to more Dire Straits like Telegraph Road from the same concert it is a real masterpiece.

Dire Straits is not music, it is a series of tales, you can hear Mark Knopfler making the guitar speak and tell you a tale which you feel but cannot put in words. A good example for this is Where do you think you are going > Private Investigations > On every street.

I was 18, I was there! The star for me was Terry Williams on the drums, he played like that the whole gig! It was towards the end of the tour, didn't look like it! We thought it may be a bit soft, no way, one of the best concerts I've been to! 40 Years later it still stands right up there (feeling old now) This is what happens when a group of master musicians get together and have fun Now watch Telegraph Road, it was the encore!

For me one of the top 5 video live recordings of all time

He doesn't have fingers on the strings. He has ice-skates. And that drummer... he's leading an avalanche. By the way, everyone HAS to the music, and everyone with a brain will eventually ask, "Gee, what came before?" and they'll dig back until they find a Key Performance to motivate more archeology, more digging, more treasures. One great thing: "listen to albums, NOT singles." Albums may be junk but you'll only know that by listening to them. There will be many more gem, real treasures among Album Bands. And Dire Straits is one of those wonderful album bands. You have a leg up already: "This is only 10 minutes and they've been playing so long before this." EXACTLY. This is an album band from the beginning.

Band is just great 😃 mark guitar 🎸 playing style is very smooth. Almost like a very beautiful amazing guitar 🎸 sound.

Telegraph road next same concert at least as good as this. Terry Williams is drumming on this in for pick withers after he left, killing it and Hal lindes on rhythm guitar after his brother left.

The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making your living like that wouldn't suck.

After I've viewed this live version of Sultans of Swing, as I must have a hundred times, I feel as though I've run a flat out mile without stopping! This is phenomenal in every sense of the word. Mark is definitely the GOAT.!

A seminal moment in live rock and roll

I saw Dire Straits many years ago at Finsbury Park Theatre. They were brilliant then, and I am still stunned whenever I see them now, as in this amazing video.

Studio versions are controlled in one way or another by technicians, managers, and producers to market a 3 or 4 min track. Whereas A live performance is freedom! Creative things happen. The energy and vibes from the crowd mix in. It's the excitement that evokes that makes the live performance I like best. Thanks for playing the most creative ,innovative music made in the 60's and 70's rock era 🎶🎸
