@@samuraikaito Hendrix is one of his idols. In an interview, he was asked which guitar player he'd most wanna jam with.....you guessed it: Jimi.

I saw a video of Billy playing Jimi's song Hey Joe using an accoustic guitar and he killed it! He also played electric in a rock band in his younger days.

Some of the best musicians in the U.S. are bluegrass players. They have fast fingers and are great story tellers. Billy wrote this song. His dad and mom were meth addicts at one point, and Billy did some drugs, too. They all managed to get clean, thank goodness. Billy is amazing!!

When I moved to Georgia from Boston 14 years ago, it was a huge culture shock, and I knew (literally) nothing about country/bluegrass music, and like you had so many preconceived notions about both the music, and the people, as I'm sure with my accent they did as well lol. Well to make a long story short, the people and the music have been incredible!! When we open doors we wouldn't normally open, we often find amazing things. Great reaction man!!

You should listen to more of Billy's original music. Next I would recommend Turmoil and Tinfoil (the Music City Roots version), Away From the Mire, Heartbeat of America, Meet Me at the Creek, Talking Water, Wargasm, Watch It Fall (official video is amazing!)

Billy Strings got me into bluegrass too. I agree, I like how different it is and the energy of it, it is a unique sound. At Billy’s concerts he will switch back and forth into electric and shred too, he does long extended jams sometimes over 20 minutes and does a different setlist every concert like Grateful Dead. So he is super popular among the deadhead/jam band scene too. His band puts on one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen and I go to a lot of concerts.

The origins of this style of guitar playing go back to Doc Watson. Doc was in a band that lacked a fiddle player, so he adapted his picking style to mimic the clean fluid lines that come from the fiddle. Billy is the latest in a line of sick ass pickers who picked up and expanded on this playing style. Besides Doc Watson, check out Clarence White, Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, and another contemporary of Billy, Molly Tuttle.

My buddy loves bluegrass, and introduced me to Billy, as well as Charlie Parr -- at least I think Charlie is bluegrass, or at least bluegrass adjacent, with a bit of blues tied in. This joint has been stuck in my head for months: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rHx9q86hhM6dc7w.html

A few thoughts...and yes, you've been missing out!!!!! Better late than never, for sure. Glad to see a new fan.....and a great reaction... But, the Gold Standard video of this song is the "Couch Version" with the "Green Shirt Guy"... Why? Because you get to see him right at the very beginning of his performing career, and you get to see him shredding the entire song as there are no other instruments.... And finally, his friends cheering him on help make this raw performance a real gem... I strongly recommend you watch/react to it..... The view count speaks for itself. As a footnote, the "Lower Standards" channel has a bunch of real early Billy Strings performances worth checking out.... Bluegrass (don't call it Country!!) is White Man's Blues.... Cheery, upbeat melodies often (but definitely not always) with dark, depressing lyrics..... The genre has its roots in old-timey string band music, and further back, from Scotland. Many of the Hillbillies of Appalachia have Scottish roots...... While this is a pure Bluegrass song (and an original, BTW), much of what they play is in the sub-genre called Jamgrass, and they have tons more original songs... They cover songs from other Jamgrass/Jam Bands like SCI and Phish, and do an excellent job of covering the Grateful Dead...as they do other artists in various genres.... They also dabble in Gospel, Blues, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Doors and other rock bands.... You've already seen the duo with Tommy Emmanuel, so i won't include it, but here's a quinfecta of videos i like to recommend....BTW, Molly Tuttle is another rabbit hole you need to dive into..... kzread.info/dash/bejne/iHp5vLGjpNXdnNY.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/mH6h3LWYgsjKmJs.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/iWic1KdtYpDSXaw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/fn6u3I-HpdKTgbQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/f3p8uLGue7aeXZs.html BTW, IMO, that last video has some of the top pickers on the planet all on one stage....

"I guess the style of the music and the tempo and the cadence and everything about this, just I would never think that the lyrics and the meaning of the song would be about drugs and what not." Welcome to bluegrass, my friend! The genre that thinks depression and hard times need to be expressed with fast-paced, catchy tunes!

Bluegrass is a mix of a bunch of different cultures. One being Irish. I don't know how many old Irish songs you've heard, but there are a lot with an upbeat happy sound, and then some lyrics about suffering, depression, and oppression. Not lyrics you would expect with that sound. I guess it was like a cultural coping mechanism.

Drugs were pretty absent from broadcasted blue grass until Johnny Cash sort of broke the taboo with a lyric written by Kris Kristofferson he sang about wanting to get stoned on TV and being as famous and influential as he was suddenly all sorts of songs came with similar ideas
