    My grandfather was a hairdresser & had his own salon in Oaklyn, NJ. He taught me how to add volume & lift to my hair. He would set my hair in curlers & use the long metal clips then put me under these huge dryers. After he’d brush my hair put. It’s worked better than any technique I’ve used since. Oldies are goodies ❤

    @@naturalkinkycurlymarie7496Some just have naturally thick hair regardless of whether they use heat on it. My mam is in her 60s and still has super thick, long, blonde hair. She blow dries and straightens hers. It's just genetics. Both my parents have thick hair so me and my brother do too. Using heat can damage the hair you have but it's not gonna affect the hair that's not grown in yet. Your hair will either thin with age or it won't. Obviously if you live to be 90 odd then it's probably gonna start thinning at some point.

I do use a blow dry hood (or whatever they are called) though, because my thick, dense hair would take forever to dry, otherwise. Those are well worth their money, imo, if one doesn't want to leave the curlers in, overnight.

    When I travel, I do “pin curls”. Just wrap slightly damp hair in a circle, use bobby pins to secure the curl, and in the morning, I have long waves that last well into the evening. I learned the technique from a great aunt.

  • @vegetablea9611

    @vegetablea9611

    that is good for waves, but not for volume, though. you need to lift the roots up, and the curlers help do that.

    @@vegetablea9611 When you take out the pins, bend at the waist and use your fingers to tussle the hair. A few spritz of volumizing spray and toss the hair back. A little backcombing will add even more volume.

    Thank you. I forgot about that after being away from hairstyling for so many years. I went to be a boilermaker welder and didn’t do it again for decades and a full head of red curly hair and never had to concern myself with volume. It was the opposite actually until I lost much of my hair to chemo. I have been so sad and felt there was nothing I could do to look and feel good again. Watching you I think I will pull out my old bag of assorted rollers and try to make myself feel wonderful again. Thank you.

    I slept in those prickly rollers many times as a straight haired girl in the 70’s. However my older cousin rolled her hair in those giant hard plastic rollers, the ones that were pastel colors and holes in them. They were as big as Coca-Cola cans. How she did it I will never know. I bet she has neck pain from all that. She has very curly hair and those big rollers smoothed it out. She looked 70’s chic and beautiful!

But we had beautiful curls all day then next day and both of us had straight, fine hair. Every Christmas, I decorated a small pink trees with black and pink roles, perm rods, bobby pins...and pictures of my sister and I and your daughter in ours curlers and curls. So fun.
