Such a beautiful song, and absolutely my favorite Graham Nash song. "And in my bed late at night, God how I miss you." Such a sad line, and how telling the next. "Someone is gonna take my heart, but no one is gonna break my heart again." A song writer can not put his heart more out on his sleeve. Joni passed on something very special.

Nash's BEST solo song ever. Beyond amazing how much the electric guitarist covered and filled quite effectively with style. Funny on Joni's album released shortly before, has a song on it ..... "I had a King." Regret vs Reality vs Pride. Complicated, but made some GREAT music.

I well remember this song from Songs for Beginners in 1972. Besides the song's exquisite beauty I remember Jerry Garcia playing the pedal steel guitar and creating an emotional context that syncs with Nash's vocal. Nash handles the song awfully well for pushing 80. A real artist.

I belong to a classic rock FB Page and everyone is always asking questions like what was your favorite song by this artist or that artist or what was your favorite album of all times....lots of questions like that.....and I can never answer those questions because there are just too many songs and albums from those days that I loved so much - I could never pick just one. HOWEVER that being said - if someone held me down and said tough crap you HAVE to pick just one song as your favorite of all times....I would have to pick I used to be a King ( the studio version) - This version is a gem as well -- I just love Shayne's solo.....it has more heart than any solo from some of those players who can play a million notes a second.
