This is how I would convert this old upper storey Shepherds Hut into a luxurious 2 bed courtyard home. The aim is to connect 2 buildings across an enclosed courtyard: one is an existing open-sided shelter; the other is a basic mountain cabin above a store room with no internal staircase. It's so clear in my head: how a family could throw a birthday party on a sunny afternoon in this house: with kids playing in the different courtyards, adults lounging in the living room and reading nook, teenagers segregating themselves in the bedrooms, and several dogs running around, food being laid out on the table, and lots of fun. Your design reminds me of my husband's family home back in Mexico City, where every weekend was a celebration of family and food circling the central courtyard. Thank you, Gemma!

Tricky space to work with and the most clever I've seen so far I think. The story of the man and his family brings another level of interest for me. I get a sense of the people this is built for which helps me imagine this as a working house, rather than simply an interesting design project in the abstract.

Absolutely! I've loved all of these designs but this one is very special & my favorite! I do so hope that the people who own these bases of dreams that she creates hire her to complete closure. If it were me, I would have a hard time not seeing at least some of them finally come to reality! I've always wondered if she gets regular people suggesting "Oh I know of a tiny structure that would be difficult for even you to redesign into comfortable, usable, practical, livable space!" and then she goes to talk to the owner about her ideas? OR Do the owners contact & hire her as one of several, as in "We are taking bids on a redesign contract, would you be interested?" OR is this just a fun hobby, kinda like "The Simms" (if that's the case, she should quit her day job because, she is really good at this "hobby")

Hey! I’ll answer your questions! So for this particular project, the owner appointed me to propose a design for the site. I’m able to work internationally by offering projects up to concept design stage only and then provide consultation support thereafter. People also put forward their buildings as video suggestions to me and I create designs unappointed, but on the understanding that the design will be paid for if the owner decides to proceed with it. Sometimes I’m sent projects of properties for sale and if I think it’ll make a good subject I may do a design simply for KZread, possibly with payment by a brand partner but often without. My aim is to promote wider access to bespoke design and to practice my profession for a broader audience than simply a few individuals. I love what I do and I care how people live and how buildings and materials are valued so hope to simply share that and see where it goes!

gemma, i can't express how much this design has resonated with me and the way you have honoured the history of the property and respected and incorporated the owner's wishes, has created a true masterpiece. i have always loved the concept of an inner courtyard that is accessible to the entire dwelling and your design is perhaps the most elegant realization of that idea that i have ever seen. i know that i am going to be watching this video many, many times.

Always admire your architect designs with old buildings. But the only changes I would suggest is to use a slightly darker wood or a light grey shade, instead of the light shade for the new walls, IMHO, it would 'tie in' with the old wood and stone. And my suggestion in the guest room is to install a murphy bed so the guest room could be multi-purpose, and could also used as a study or another reading room or a play area for children. I love the wild flowers on the roof top and how the courtyard is kept spacious, even though there is an indoor corridor (with large windows and doors) connecting the two buildings. I always wanted to live in a house with an inner courtyard, and now this is definitely a dream house.

It is so interesting to learn how you problem solve. When you were listing the owner’s wish list it felt very overwhelming, but you accomplished it and with a beautiful design. You are very gifted. Thank you for sharing your abilities with us. It’s like watching Beethoven write symphonies. Truly thankful for you, I am learning so much.
