Thank you for this one, I'm crying. When my grandmother was moved to the nursing home for her dementia, I would come every week and read a chapter of Beowulf. It became our thing for nearly a year, until she passed away, and other patients would join in so it became a pseudo-bookclub. This brought back some good memories.

@@jeffreyherrera5069 Oh yeah, I remember hearing/reading about how J.R.R. Tolkien got the word "orc" from the Olde English "orc-néas" (roughly meaning "hell-devils" or "demon-corpses") used to describe the descendents Cain (i.e. Grendel, his mother, and apparently Elves) in this very poem.

@@Serpentking789 And I'm going based off memory, since I haven't read the Beowulf text since my college days. But I do explicitly remember seeing the part where it describes Grendel being of Cain's line.

I love the detail you put into the hilt of the bigass sword that killed Grendel's mum. In the original text it, the carvings on the hilt depicted the flooding of the Earth and the destruction of the Biblical giants, and i can see glimpses of that at 9:41. Awesome attention to detail. Not to mention the lack of wings on the dragon, since Germanic wyrms don't always have wings

Dude's really committed to the 4:3 bit, isn't he? Loved this video. I actually read an abridged version of Beowulf in my English Literature class in high school. You really did it justice. Especially the parts where the Christian monks transcribing the story took jabs at Germanic paganism.

Your animation comedy and art are getting really good.
Jackson Crawford, a renowned Norse expert, has described Norse stories by saying they operate on "dream logic" and that is the best description of Norse stories I've ever heard. "I had just defeated the monster when the monster's MOM showed up. Luckily, I had a sword that has never failed the wielder. Oh no! The sword that has never failed has failed! Luckily there is another sword that can kill anything right here!"
Loved your translation. Wish I'd had a teacher like you. L&S. TC. 😄👍 (over from reddit btw)

He does it again!!! Watched it after it premiered and wanted to come back and leave a nice comment. Your content is great and I hope you continue to make more of it!!!
Few details missed - One: Grendel's mother tried to feed Beowulf to her pet beasts before fighting him herself, and she fought with a knife of her own. Two: Beowulf for a metal mast to the dragon fight and it got welded to his face. Ok, sure that is gruesome, but it was an important detail. Three: Every instance of the sword breaking when Beowulf tried to smack the muster was left out. Why? There is a deliberate interruption of the dragon fight to mention it tends to happen. Four: The dragon's smoke and fangs were also toxic. Fifth: Beowulf didn't rip Grendel's arm right off, they fought their way around the hall breaking most of it apart. Source: I just had a class on this.
