I tried towing 11,000 pounds in freezing weather... My EV Truck Lied!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Today we tow my electric Hummer, with my electric Rivian Pickup Truck. Electric trucks aren't known for their towing ability - so today we try throwing two hurdles at once. Lots of weight in the freezing cold. I forgot to add the 1000lbs of Tongue weight to the overall weight of the trailer. We were actually towing 11,000lbs not 10,000lbs. oops.

My only question is WTF would anyone spend nearly $100k for an electric truck with such low mileage, when you can get a brand new fossil fuel one for less than half the cost, and has over 3 times the range? Your truck costs more than my house, which also runs on electric at a cost of over $1,000.00 per month. You do know that you aren't saving the environment right? That electricity isn't coming from the sun. And when it's time to change the batteries, you're going to pay half the cost of he vehicle again, and load the waste into a non-recyclable environment known as a waste field. The same place out dated solar panels go, that can never be re-used, and never deteriorate, or biodegrade much like the plastics in your composter.

@@HalfAssHomestead I do charge directly from the sun, and lithium batteries *are* 95% recyclable. You need to update your talking points. Yeah the price is high - but the rest of that you said is false. To each their own - just don't lie about stuff.

@@HalfAssHomestead I don't care about the environment much, but I find the rivian to be a very interesting offroader because of its electric motors. You can get really precise yet powerful torque control for each wheel that any fossil fuel car simply can't match. As for mileage, it might be lower, but because you can charge it at home you can always have a full charge, so it doesn't really matter. For long road trips, you'd most likely need to take a 30 minute break either way (for bathroom, food, stretching legs), might as well do it in a fast charger station.

So you spend 6 hours a year filling up your ICE truck....outside. And you had to fill up the tank after only 100 miles. How much time do you spend doing brake jobs? EVs don't wear out brakes or rotors. How much time do you spend doing oil changes? EVs don't need oil changes, or transmission fluid changes, or engine air filters, spark plugs, catalytic converters, mufflers, particulate filters, DEF or stops at gas stations twice a week, every week for your entire life. You can charge up your EV a few times a week all year long in a garage. It takes 3 seconds to plug it in with no going outside in the cold. Do you make 200 mile round trips every day of the year? That's 73,000 miles per year. Most people who own trucks don't tow most of the time. Oh, the humanity.

I can go twice as far as your precious electric truck and when I stop to fuel up it takes 5 minutes and then I'm back on the road again going twice as far again as you can go all while you are still waiting for your truck to charge. I'm also sure you wasted time looking for a charging station. How much is your time worth there snowflake? Not much it would seem. Lastly, my truck has almost 700k miles on it. @@michaell1603 Phone BMS modules operate very differently than EV range estimates. Phone battery percentages go by voltage and/or wattage, while almost always having 5 - 10% headroom at either end of the scale to adjust for situational tolerances. Let's say the battery is "rated" for 13.5W, but can actually go up to 14W when fully charged. That extra 0.5W is why your phone stays at 100%. The same thing happens at 0%, and that's usually to safely shut down the phone and keep the clock running when off. And again, this is to accommodate manufacturing tolerances. Some batteries might have a defect that only allows them to charge to 13.7W, for example. But by keeping that 13.5W rating, it guarantees that all batteries will function at least as well as expected.

All kinds of Utah going on with the Weigh Safe hitch and Big Bubba's trailers. Looks like Utah County. Cool video.
Zach: let's add some more weight to get that 10k for the zeroes in the title! Rivian: More weight!!! = More range!!!!
Jerry thanks for testing it!
I wonder if the mileage was spiking up because the extra weight was putting a lot of amps into the battery when regenerating. The high amperage would cause the voltage to spike upwards leading it to have a higher voltage and possibly think it was at a high state of charge. Then it compared how many miles it had already traveled with little voltage drop and figured the remaining range to be high.

Everything has a learning curve. I've been driving an EV for three years and the first few months were ropy with chargers. But I learned how they worked, what my car was telling me and how to plan. Just like I did with petrol cars. Last summer I drove from Galway, Ireland to Stockholm, Sweden and it was easy. Obviously not while towing, but I suspect after a few more goes you'll have worked out how to do it all way better. Always good to learn new things!

Gas is a lot simpler though, You have gas or diesel, then you have ordinary to supreme gas, and that's it. With EV you have mulitple charging standards, multiple charging rates, and wildly different prices for those charging rates.

Whenever you secure a vehicle to a trailer, you should try and tie to an unsprung point, ie something that doesn't move when the suspension compresses. Usually an axle tube is a good spot. That way your straps don't loosen up or fall off when you hit a bump and the body moves on the suspension. Definitely do it that way if you're using chains and binders since they don't have any stretch in them to take up that slack.

Didn't he tie directly to the wheels as well as to the tow hooks? Pretty sure I saw some straps going through the wheels. Hummers have 4 wheel independent suspension so tying to the axles isn't really an option

Weird.. I was taught the opposite. You want to tie down the vehicle from the body, and you strap it down until the suspension compresses so you don't get body roll on the vehicle that's being towed. ESPECIALLY if you are towing a truck.

I don't even think it'd show a range at that point lol Living in Canada, I know many people who say their Tesla's range goes to crap in the winter. I can only imagine how extreme cold (not just temps around freezing, but temps in a REAL Canadian winter) with 10,000lbs hitched up would cause the range to drop by a HUGE amount.
@eDoc2020

Relatively little I'd guess. AFAIK the main range reduction in the cold is from running the heater. This will be insignificant compared to the range loss from pulling the non-aerodynamic trailer.

One note about the weigh safe locks, they laser etch the key code on the face of the lock. There's a clear enough shot in the video of yours to be able to make out the code and order a replacement key. I e-mailed them and they wouldn't replace it with one without the code engraved. I ended up just replacing the lock with a Cobra 7 vending machine lock that had matching keys to my toolbox and locking hitch pin. I did have to JBweld the new lock in as it didn't stay as well as the original.

If so then you should have added the tongue weight in as well bringing you to 10,050 ish guessing from the 750 weigh safe scale measurement.
