@steven mckay Walter Ray has been quoted in the past as saying that Earl was the greatest of all time. I agree, he truly dominated the PBA with the number of wins each season combined with the times where he would lead a tournament, qualify for the top seed by a huge margin and have to come in cold and get by who ever was climbing the step ladder.

@@feddyvonwigglestein3481 I don’t think you can really compare players from different eras. The lane conditions and equipment are so much different that it’s almost a different game. Judging by the number of seniors I know who average between 200 and 220 (on the THS) I think the pro bowlers from the 50s & 60s would have put up similar numbers to the current pros on modern conditions with modern bowling balls.

  • @rmoore911

I would argue that averaging 190 on tour 15 years ago is more impressive than 220 now. I stopped bowling 20 years ago using an old school grey rhino and averaged 175. Never bowled higher than a 230 in league or practice. Just picked bowling back up after 20 year layoff, and within my first 12 games back I've already bowled 2 240+ games with a new ball. The new ball tech has increased scores significantly compared to old school urethane balls from when I bowled regularly. Not taking away from what the younger guys are doing, because you still have to hit your marks, but the modern balls allow for far more aggressive bowling styles which have led to higher averages.

  • @Ironfangzu

What you say is mostly true but I am assuming you are bowling on a THS house shot pattern. House shots are designed to give tons of miss room. Miss left? the ball rides the oil into the pocket. Miss right, the ball hooks automatically once it hits the break point and hits the pocket flush. Take into account that these pros we are watching are bowling on almost the opposite of house shots. Not only is there little miss room, the oil patterns are designed to punish any mistakes. Watch them bowl on the Cheetah pattern, for example. Every pro is standing over the left gutter cap and throwing the ball out to the first or second board, where the ball wheels back to the pocket if they do it perfectly. Miss right? Straight into the gutter. Miss left? There is no hold room and the ball dives into the nose for a Greek Church. The modern oil patterns, and the modern balls, have made the game both easier and harder. if you just picked up the ball and threw a couple of 240+ games, you must have great form to take advantage of the house shots. Enjoy it =)

After a few games the shot looks exactly the same on all of these patterns. The same 15 guys that can throw this shot (lofting the left gutter from the right, hard down the first arrow with urethane from the left) are successful. Its getting kind of hard to watch. There should be major differences and different types of bowlers showcasing their unique skills. PBA has become redundant.
