I've been thinking this for YEARS. Even when games were blanket $59.99 it was ridiculous. Not all games are equal and it's really sad that they are treated that way. Luckily, most games are discounted 15-25% after the first few months and 40-50% within half a year to a year. I rarely buy games full price anymore. I'm tired of games needing years of patches before they are at the quality they should have been when they were released. That's if they are even patched at all. I'm over that shit, and over FOMO in general. Been gaming too long to have such low standards.

I used to care about graphics when I was younger but as an adult I've realized being shallow about how a game looks really makes you miss out on some great games. Especially going back and playing older games that may not have aged super well.

As someone who bought day one and am having a lot of fun for it, I think that’s fair. I love team ninja and don’t mind giving them my $$, but this is absolutely a game that will be on sale this summer, maybe even PlayStation plus (remember, wo long was day 1 game pass)

Having grown up in the late 90s and 2000s I was already wowed by PS4 era graphics when they came out. Even though this doesn't hold up to the modern standard, it still looks objectively good in a vacuum. Art direction is more important to fidelity to me, and above that is gameplay, story, and performance.

big reason why we see games become so expensive to make and to purchase is because of the public's expectation to be the most photorealistic and the most intricate and detailed experience. the PS2 era had SO many darn games because it was an era of experimentation and now we have games that cost 80 dollars on release that might not even be a finished product. all in all i just hope the state of triple A games improves. games cost too much and i want to support the devs in making their passion projects as much as i can

The faults it has is not enough to argue that it should have been a 40 dollar game. The game, whether you like it or not, offers enough to be sold at 70. This goes back to my main point in my previous comments that I believe gamers have become too critical without realizing. They praise older games for whatever reasons, but don't realize those games were sold at 60 and almost on average were unfinished, glitchy, and had a lot of faults you don't typically see in modern games. Yet, we have those same gamers whining about pop-in or low resolution graphics as if it's something we've never seen before. It's ridiculous.

I don't think the graphics are bad enough to get upset over.

Rise of the Rōnin was my most anticipated game for the first-half of 2024 and after playing it for just about 5hrs now I can certainly say that it doesn’t disappoint! At least I’m loving it. 😊

On a ship it makes sense to have the head away from the wall as the sides of the ship experience more rocking/disturbance with the ship’s movement than the center would.

I'm not a big graphics guy, but I have to agree with the analysis here. It is so frustrating how little games have jumped forward with the PS5. They have such overblown ridiculous budgets, but they don't look like it. Couple that with Sony saying we're already halfway through the PS5's lifecycle and it's very frustrating to look at the prospect of being sold a PS6 without the PS5 even being fully utilized

How exactly Sony claimed we're halfway is beyond my understanding. The console launched in late 2020, and most people could actually get their hands on it by 2022. Only 3 years have passed and the life cycle of a console is supposed to be 7 years, so there's still 1 and a half year remaining for the PS5 to reach halfway there. It makes me sad that sony will abandon this beautiful piece of tech one day. But it's life and it must go on...

I think it's because of the waves, if it was headboard side to the wall, the bed and your head would get slammed against the wall of ship when huge waves tilt the ship

Except the bed is flush against the wall meaning if its tilting the other way your sliding feet first towards that wall and not head first. It's really neither since a lot of ships go side against the wall, one to make it easier not to roll out of bed dealing with ship movement and two, like you said if the ship tilts you're sliding side first which is considerably safer than sliding head or feet first. @@Baell1

It seems that while the critics are having a sook about this game, anyone who is actually playing it is having a blast. This game is a perfect example of why you really shouldn't take a critics word as law and make your own decisions. Graphics have never been a driving factor on whether or not I enjoy a game or not. This games combat is so fun and satisfying!

i actually sleep like that because i can hear the buzzing of the fridge on the other side of the wall of my room if my head is against it, so i have to sleep with my head away from the wall, aka on the inside of the room, so the sound disperses through the room and i don't hear the annoying, tinnitus-like buzzing. this way though my head's directly facing my tv when i'm lying on my right side so that's another plus.

I gotta say off the top I’m about 8 hours in and I love this game. All I’ve seen is people say how bad this game is going to be, but give no explanations other than the graphics. And while the graphics don’t hold up when compared to things like “Ghost of Tsushima.” Looking at them objectively they are good. And don’t detract from the overall experience at all. If you don’t play it because it doesn’t look photo realistic then you’re missing out on an incredible game.

First off, idk why anyone at Team Ninja thought people would enjoy running place to place just to pet cats, set up bonfire flags, and pray at shrines. Shit is a boring chore.. Second of all, story line is complete cringe and wack. At least Woo Long followed a better storyline. And graphics looked great too.. Third of all, they show their laziness in creating this game by have you chase down markers on the map as “Locations you should visit”… I just go to the locations just to get the notification then immediately leave the area once it says I’ve visited the location. Also, there is nothing to actually interact with in the world. You just run around the world on a horse spamming one button to collect stuff for crafting etc. If you try to even slice or kill the animal’s in the world.. They just get scared and disappear. And to actually get their loot as if you killed them, all you have to do is run along side the animals and press your collect button to pick up their loot and they just vanish. Cmon man… like It’s definitely not the worst game ever.. But if you’re telling me $70-$85 is worth the price. I’d say hell fucking nah. I pre ordered the game and I hope it gets better.. Because so far I’m not impressed…

I've played the game for a few hours and have just arrived at its first big city. It's been very enjoyable for me so far, and I haven't encountered any major glitches either.

The textures, lighting, shadows, etc. literally the graphics, not the art direction are not miles better than this game. Respectfully if you can’t see how bad the graphics of Elden Ring are for a 2022 game and you’re trashing this game you got to take your fanboy glasses off. I don’t get the hate this game is getting.

Thing is, the graphics that we get today(If increased) are not sustainable for the long run when it comes to game budget and time. Not defending this game but i think graphics now a day need to stay and be sharpened up to be 4k 60fps... if we keep increasing the graphics it will get worse...focus on honing these graphics and increase art direction.

I have long been in the camp of "give me good gameplay over good graphics and give me good AA games over bloated AAA ones" - and RotR is delivering that in spades. I feel like there are so many cool aspects of this game that were a. under marketed, and b. underappreciated. Like how often do you get to switch between you, and other party member in a fully fledged action RPG?

Not gonna lie I played for a hour and was like wtf ???😂😂 I have a LG C2 OLED tv and the graphics are terrible. The way the characters move I hate. For this to debut March 2024 , no way the graphics should be like that . If you would ask me I want a refund. It’s hard for me imo to play Spiderman, God Of War, Horizon and Ghost of Tsushima and resort to this. Those games set the bar so high and are masterpieces . I’m not impressed , it’s not worth $70 it’s like a $50 game. I could see this game being remastered in the future. For me if the graphics suck and player movement suck I can’t get into it

The game is rough around the edge, and the story doesn't make a whole lot of sense when going in blind. If you're familiar with the period...all of this constant side-changing makes sense, given that the pre-Boshin era was basically a cold war between the Imperial and Shogunate sides, with the people on either side changing regularly as the motivations of each side is constantly shifting, as well. Lastly, your character's alignments are basically mirroring those of Sakamoto, who was all over the place in terms of his connections. My biggest issue with the game from that story perspective is in its conveyance of all this. It makes choosing a side into a big deal. But it really isn't, mechanically or story-wise by and large, even later on as the choice you make does matter a bit more and all. That said, the combat is great, the environmental storytelling and the art direction is immersive. The graphics themselves do need work, but mostly I think in terms of optimization, not in terms of raw quality. I think it's best to view this game in the same way you might view some of the older Assasin's Creed games: as a thematic exploration of history through a game with a heavy dose of fiction

I’m starting to get the opposite opinion of him. A lot of his videos are him just saying the same thing over and over again to inflate the run time. He also seems to think some things are way more important than they are. Take graphics for example. A lot of older games are still incredibly fun to play and look like shit. Sly cooper games, Mario 64, most ps2 metal gears. It all about the gameplay and how immersive the world is. It doesn’t need to be photo realistic. At the same time if you’re honesty expecting a box of already outdated hardware to continue pushing the graphical limits of games you’re going to be disappointed every single time.

It's bad that now we have elden ring being 4 times the size at the same price? And neither were cutting edge for it's time. I love them both but this is nonsense, a lot of crap games were always 60.

Different studios means different standards for game graphics presentations. That is the only way they can differentiate each other. The gameplay and story will be the basis if this game will be good.

I'm glad you gave it a shot. Ronin is one of those games you really may have to play for yourself. To me, it's all about expectations. If you expect this to be Nioh 3, you'll be disappointed. If you expect it to be an in house AAA Sony game you'll be disappointed. If you can meet it where it's at, it could be really fun. I'm just a few hours in and am enjoying it so far. I was surprised how well they pulled off the beginning motivation before the title card. A technical stunner it is not, but the visual composition can be beautiful. Humans are visual animals. I have no doubt if it has art and textures even on par with Elden Ring it would've broken into the 80s on Metacritic. Easier said than done though. It takes many artists and programmers many years to create beautiful games, and there's always a trade-off.

personally i won't buy another team ninja game unless they really put effort into it. wo long was disappointing and seeing them release the next game just a year later with a 70 bucks price tag makes me think they really just want the money. if they bash out another low effort game next year they're done tbh

​​​@@ShadowsnoonRonin was in development for eight years alongside both Nioh and Wo Long. It is anything but low effort. Best to be informed and hold expectations accordingly. Part of the problem with the low visual fidelity is that they started so long ago and were also adapting their engine to an entirely new style of game. That said I do have higher expectations for their next current gen exclusive game.

Luke, your favor of graphic fidelity is alot of what drives the game industry. We end up with pretty games that have shit mechanics and are always shallow. Bad writing, "live services" and sequels. If devs were not always pushed to make the pretty new shiny thing, we might get aaa games that try new things. But the dev time is 5+ years and hundreds of millions of $ to get to market. If we want good games with new ideas, we cant always bitch about graphics. This game looks fine, Im not gonna play it, but not because its not bleeding edge pretty. Edit; after posting this I saw your footage of the white horse in the courtyard. I amend my statement to say this game does look like shit, but thats still not the big thing we should discuss.

As far as I know, the headboard would be placed away from the outer ship walls so that when the ship rocked your head wouldn't be at either extreme of the rock. It's the same reason beds were typically placed perpenticular to the front orientation of the ship, or they forgoed them entirely in favor of hammocks, so as to avoid rollouts. That's been my rudimentary understanding of the bed situation

To be fair, the pillow placement is the least of my issues with that interior of a 19th century ship. Liberties was definitely taken with that look.

I was actually surprised to see the Sony intro when the game booted up. I didn’t realize they were this embedded in the project and had assumed this was just a paid exclusivity deal like Final Fantasy, which does not sport the Sony intro despite being exclusive to the console.

I think a lot of people are missing the fact that this was built to be a niche game like Nioh as most Team Ninja games are. People complain about the graphics (even all TN games look similar in fidelity), but if you look at the combat, frames, hit boxes, etc. you’ll notice it’s extremely clean and fluid. They put their time in the experience of combat the most. Their mission was not to make the next God of War. It was to take what they’ve learned from their previous games, their best things, and translate that into their FIRST open world game. It’s a very good game.

Love your vids like you’re a bastion of reason and genuineness in a sea of lies I really only disagree about Vlaahaa

As far as bed thing goes....maybe they are facing the wall, because they are on a boat and seeing things sway left and right might make u queasy as opposed to facing the wall which won't move, relative to the sleeper

They place the bed models in the room but forgot to rotate it.

I watched Jor's review and he was criticising the open world stuff while never doing so in AC games so don't trust his review I'm 6 hours into ronin and the open world stuff is basically the same as AC's map clutter but in ronin all of them offer worthy rewards hell almost everything you do is rewarded

As the room is a shared room with other purposes the large headboards pointing inwards gives you more privacy.

6 hours into rise of ronin and im loving it!! Story is pretty decent, combat is awesome, game is lots of fun. Dd2 filled with micro and lies!!

About the headboard thing, I agree with you, it makes sense to put the headboard against the wall. However, putting the headboard on the opposite side lets you have access to more air i n the room. and iwth stinkey old ships I bet it makes a hell of a differents.

I really don't mind the PS3 graphics, specially if it means the game will run smoothly at max settings in most machines, however, if the game runs badly and has outdated graphics, then it's a big problem, the devs have no excuse

15:52 It's an Asian thing, an old superstition. They believed back then that your soul would walk out of your body if your feet were facing towards the room instead of the walls. Not only that, demons often grabbed you by the ankles and dragged you out the windows or door. I just made this up and yep, I don't know why the designer did the bed this way lol

Why are critics so obsessed with graphics? The gameplay is king, and Team Ninja always has killer gameplay with solid stable 60fps. If I had a PS5 I would get this day one, I look forward to the PC port later this year.

Wow... that starting screen is basically a steal from Tsushima. Ah well what art today isn't a version or variation of what was already created. Shame that this was not up to par, but will keep an eye out for updates. By the way... your office is looking great my guy!

I chose this over Dragon's Dogma 2. I chose poorly. I'm still going to try and finish it and I really did enjoy the first part of the game but I've been sorely disappointed as the longer I've played the more boring/repetitive it's become. Even then a lot of flaws could be overlooked if they weren't trying to pass this off as AAA game. It's not. This is a AA game in every way.

The instinct to sleep facing the entrance to the room is in fact natural and a defence strategy so that your back is not to an intruder when you get up.

I'll definitely pick this up if it comes to PC so I can have all the visual bells and whistles at 60+fps.

Yeah, this is a one-and-done game for me. I am enjoying the combat & exploration, but I won't venture into NG+. At first I ignored the graphical glitches, but it is very noticeable. Hope they release a patch and address the issues.

£70 for that?! For comparison, Elden Ring was £50...

Has anyone else played all of the way of the samurai games? I was truly hoping that this was just a continuation of those games because I really do miss them and they’ve just been cast aside as an entire series.

Don't pick favorites you're a game reviewer it makes you look bad when you have a bias, his entire Elden Ring video he literally said nothing about the graphics yet harps on it so much in this one.

1080p with ray tracing at 60 FPS shouldn't be an issue for ps5, yet game devs can't make it happen. 4k 60FPS I do not forsee on console anytime soon... highend PCs are now starting to be able to hit that.

This game so fun so far... Im about 4 hours in and loving it... Its like GoT with better combat and its 2000% more Japanese.

The problems with graphical improvements generation over generation, are manyfold, of course - First, we have texture resolution, it can only go so far, based on screen resolution, and available VRAM. Then I'd say the next big part of visuals is lighting, which is hardware-wise one of the heaviest things to render, whether raytraced or rastered. With time, the graphics become *just* so much more realistic, that to achieve the "next level" of realism, requires a SIGNIFICANTLY larger jump in capacity in either console or GPU, so naturally, the improvements can only be SO big, generation over generation, and they will diminish, the more we approach so called "photo-realism".

Sony really fucked over this game. It's the best game Team Ninja has released imo

The graphics do matter the PS 5 has been out for a while, no excuses....
