When you're painting on darker fabrics. Put a layer of white down first. It'll make the colours more vibrant. 😊

Also works on wood that sucks up a lot of paint. If fabric is still crunchy then just scrunch if and wiggle it until it gets some movement back.

The orange soaking into the fabric problem was probably caused by two things: very low pigment concentration in the cheap paint, too much fabric medium, and not using a white or bright yellow base layer.

I also wanted to suggest using white as a base layer, because the orange probably is fairly translucent while white/black are often quite opaque and therefore have a cover better. Good luck + way to keep having amazing ideas + creative solutions!

Agree! Even on canvasses, you should do a white wash as a base to help the colors spread easier and pop. Definitely white everywhere then paint it all over.

I love apple barrel. Its the great cheap paint ever artist needs. I love using it for making things look dirty, old, broken. For primary designs and base coat. Its so cheap

“Once something goes in the trunk of my car, it doesn’t leave.” We are soul sisters, because I still have a nurse’s kit in there. I quit nursing school 3 years ago.

Awe! My great grandmother had one of these when she was a teen, her mother sewed it for her, except instead of butterfly wings it was bird wings. This makes my heart happy ❤️

The final garment really reminds me of a brazilian book called "O Caso da Borboleta Atíria" (The Case of the Atyria Butterfly). The main plot is about a butterfly called Atíria (which is actually a moth species) who solves a crime that happens amongst the insects in the forest. The book is illustrated with beautiful drawings in ink, and the artist imagined the protagonist with short black hair, a black dress and huge wings, very much like a fairy, and quite similar to your moth costume!

I think it came out really nice. A suggestion for bright acrylics on top of a dark background--underpaint the areas for the bright color with white first.

a little tip from an artist who likes painting on dark pieces of canvas n stuff, go down with a layer or two of white before plopping down the brighter tones/colors! it'll help make it pop and it shouldn't soak through the fabric, i think. i've honestly never painted on fabric asides from my graduation cap lmao

I earnestly love this video, the candidness about the process and it's faults along the way make me feel so validated in my own costuming struggles. I've been in this place many times when I don't have enough time, everything is going wrong, and I simply have to push through and get the costume out anyways. Seeing a professional, that has in my mind 'made it' so to speak, struggle in the way that I do, and be honest about it, gives me such a boost of confidence in my own work and helps me feel like I, too, can make it someday even as I struggle and stumble. Thank you. You are a true inspiration.

Thank you for being honest about making mistakes and being rushed and not making your deadlines, because I'm also trying to learn how to make my own costumes and I get really stressed when my costumes aren't done in time for ren faires or Halloween and it makes me feel so much better to know I'm not alone in this

The brown orange made it look so much more moth-y than if it came out orange orange so.. That's a win in my book

This is like a Halloween aesthetic western fashion inspired take of best butterfly girl Shinobu's yukata from Kimetsu no Yaiba. I like it. Also omg that song at the end gave me that one commercial flashbacks and now it's stuck in my head again after years of not hearing it.

My favorite mug says "im surrounded by idiots" i think you know were that is from i got it from my brother as a christmas gift i asked him "why this mug?" he said "i thought it suited you" i love him so much 😂

The moth and the lamp scene at the end made my entire day!

I honestly really like the splotching for the orange part, it looks natural and unique.

In my humble opinion. I think it came out FABULOUSLY!! The finished costume has a very authentically vintage look. You did an amazing job.

The important thing is the journey, not the destination, but despite the twists and turns along the way, the 'Mothmaam' outfit turned out great in the end 🙂

I love this! The one thing I've done creative that wasn't for class during this quarantine is finish the sunflower I was painting on the back of a denim shirt. I deeply, deeply feel that lack of opacity and the patchiness issue. I was ready to scrap it until I found fabric paint hidden away I bought and never used. It was the wrong color, but putting down two layers of it made a world of difference

I actually really like the orangey-brown colour of the lower wings, it gives it a lot more texture and it looks like an actual moth!

man i still really like this project, the way the wings open up to that stark white breakup pattern is so striking, and the little velvet outfit underneath is so cute and love that its like the fluffy body of a moth :0 it sucks that painting went so painfully but it turned out great and also neat that you used all materials that you already had around! I'm always trying to pick projects that I don't have to buy all new materials for, it makes me feel a little better about the craftdragon hoard when it sees some use lol
