Every time I hear you say that you may have overestimated your skill level I smile because I know that this is another project that you are going to knock out of the park. My observation is that like water, you tend to rise to whatever level is necessary to achieve your goal. You are amazing, and after sharing your channel with my twelve-year-old (who is also an artist) she has started greeting me with "skjera bagera" in the mornings.

My mother painted in oils so when I started painting, she would take me with her to classes and got me lessons with instructors that were all oil artists. I was in my 30's before I ever tried any other medium and at 65 I still struggle with acrylics. Honestly, if I could afford oils, I would use them all the time. I think with a little practice you will come to like oil better. There are lots of things you can add to oils to make them dry faster or take months to dry, depending on what you are doing. We used to put our pallette and brushes in the freezer inbetween sessions to keep the paint fresh.

Very true, acrylic is fun for quick projects and layering without smear. But limits you in blending texture. Oil pains are great with blending and texture, but dry time takes forever and it's very hard to layer an oil paint without smear.

The thing is, she takes hours and hours for tiny details, several days in total. She is going slow to reevaluate her progress at every step. Her general experience with painting, her vision of the final piece and the careful approach allow her to cancel out the very real inexperience with this specific medium. I wouldn't call it casually. It's a methodic approach that mostly uses her long trained painting skills.

Totally agreed with you when you said something was off about the fire, the way it blended into a kind of muddy effect, however personally I think you went from one extreme to the other with it. It went from blurry and muddy to vivid and white. I think it would have looked better somewhere in between. As for your dragons scales, DEFINATELY overthinking there, they look fabulous. Nothing wrong with them. My favourite bit of the image though is the humanoid figure. Love the detail, the hair and the way it blends perfectly with the colour in the scene. 👏

Watercolor is by far the most technically challenging of all the traditional painting medias ( leaving more weird stuff like pyrography out of it). While oils is the most forgiving by far. The counterpart is that Oils is the most logistically intensive, whiel Watercolor the least (you need water and nothing else and do not need even to clean your brushes if you are using synthetics)

One of my favorite things about some of the old masterworks that you can see in museums is to look for the painters trouble spot. The spot where they changed their mind a bunch. There is a self-portrait in the DMA's Wendy and Emery Reeves collection that if you look closely, the artist hated the placement of his hand with the paint pallette. You can see where layered over the original position with his new placement of the hand and pallette.

I think it looks amazing and it's more impressive considering that it's your first time with oils. Ir happens the same to me, I only paint in acrylics and gouache and fils oils kinda intimidating, I haven't tried them yet. Btw, I think the thing that looks weird on the painting (and I've noticed you did the same thing on other paintings) is that you're painting a red/orange color on top of tje blue to simulate the light from the fire but the red/orange your using is actually darker in value than the original blue tone, so it doesn't actually looks like a light source but just red paint. I think you sould make everything darker before applying the light and saturated orange tones on top of it to make the effect of fire light :). Keep up the great work, I love your channel!

I have never been artistic at all, but about a year ago I started watching someone restore art and it piqued my curiosity so I bought some cheap oils and a cheap folding easel from Walmart. (I would actually recommend buying the cheap oils from Hobby Lobby when they are on the weekly ad at half off. The WM oils were so horrible I almost gave up.) I am still no artist and I am not producing masterpieces, but putting brush to canvas is now one of my favorite things in the world to do. If you decide to give it a try, there are many wonderful tutorials here on youtube that can guide you on the journey. I am not sure, but I think the apple she did came from the same tutorial here on youtube that I followed for my first successful painting. Even with next to no talent, I have seen enough improvement in my skills that I no longer want to hide all my paintings when anyone comes around.

It's so motivating to see your whole process! With the clock for the real time it took you, and your thoughts, struggels and how you overcome them. For me it shows how much of creating something is practice, and trying new things. And a great skill tree needs time to built!

That looks fantastic Martina! I sometimes enjoy painting landscapes with oils, however I usually paint the background colours in acrylic, so I can add the foreground details in faster without the worry of them blending together, or having to wait forever for the oils to dry. It also means that I can hang them up while they are drying and not have to stress over them leaving paint on the wall.

Gosh, your work is always so incredible! Your compositions are always so compelling and you’re so good at adding depth to your work! I’m so glad you’re experimenting with oils now, because it’s such a fun medium to use, and I feel oils have such this incredible way of bringing paintings to life in a way that other mediums can’t. Also, I’ve noticed that after learning how to oil paint, my watercolor paintings have improved so much! I honestly believe every artist should try oils at least once.

Oil paint definitely seems like the teacher every perfectionist needs. It has a curious way, by it's very nature, of teaching the artist that the end result is protean. It will change, and it will morph, and the beauty is in the journey, not the grandeur of the finished piece. The parts you repaint, the layers that never seem to quite erase the ones that came before; they're there to teach you that the 'mistake' was a part of the whole. It's not a step back, it's a step in an unexpected direction. In your case, unsurprisingly, both the journey and the finished piece are incredible. Keep safe, keep shining. We can wait. It's always worth it

I like painting with oils, but it takes so long to dry once you're finished, and you have to store it really carefully because you can wreck an oil painting so easily with just dust because it will stay tacky for so long. Weeks/months if you paint thickly. I ruined a bunch of paintings not storing them right.

Nice work. try adding liquin medium to your oil paint this will speed up the drying time in the first few layers and then you can back off with it if you want the drying time slower to blend. Also, try using glazes when the painting is fully dry., this will enhance the colours depending on what colours you choose. Have a play around and enjoy.
