    As someone who collects action figures, I knew they weren't going to make any money going to a reseller. They are never going to give near full price because they need to turn a profit on what they buy. Like Connor said, you could make a profit by selling to other collectors if you're willing to deal with all that comes with doing that.

    100% this. The more middle men there are the less you'll get because they need to take a cut. It goes the same for selling used video games or trading cards. I once talked to my local card store about selling some of my old MTG cards. They literally quoted me for 30% of the online price in cash and 50% in trade-in. I said a big 'nope' to that, went online, listed it myself, and got 80-ish% of the online value because, of course, Ebay and sites like that ALSO take a cut.

    That's not entirely true. It just doesn't work if you walk cluelessly into an arcade and throw some money at some machines. It's important to know which figures are worth what before playing, so you can decide to play a machine based on the value of the figure rather than the assumed popularity. Also you'd want to visit several arcades, and avoid the major ones (SEGA/Taito). And you'd probably want to sell them to resellers in Akihabara rather than Shinjuku, as they generally offer a higher price. Once you got the flow going its actually fairly easy to make profit - if it wasn't you wouldn't see so many Japanese people doing it. Though you won't get rich

    35:23 it’s basic pawn shop rules that are pretty global. Basically, the shop needs to keep record of your ID just in case you are selling something that belongs to someone else. If that were to happen, then they can press charges on the thief and give back the item to the rightful owner.

    I moved to Japan 8 years ago and this was my first job when I came here lol you gotta know what the figures are worth though, so being a collector already helped a lot but also being good at the game. I got really well known in my area at the sega and namco bc I would go in daily and win huge bags of stuff and I would win many in 1-2 tries. The sega wasn't really cool about it. The staff would follow me around and peak around machines and watch me etc. They also would use their little mic and then I would see them opening up the machines and mesing with the controls to weaken the claws etc. I would have to rent a locker to put all of the stuff in to not immedietely get spoted and even then eventually they put up signs on all the machines saying 1 prize per machine bc I would legit clean them out bc its so easy lol On the flip side the Namco was great and they used me as free advertising basically. They would announce when I came bc all the staff knew me. They would say on the loud speaker " The american pro has returned " etc and people would follow me around and watch and always tell me how hard it was and i'm like Idk about that I find it easy lol Some people would ask for help or I would even watch people and give them tips on how to get the item in 1-2 tries etc. each machine has different tricks but you get really used to it after awhile. Some places are scams tho. So I would just do 1 coin to test the claw strength and in lots of cases it was fine and I would even get the item on the first try but if it was weak I would move to another machine or shop if need be when you are winning figures, roombas, towels, games, gaming systems, ipods , plushies etc it add up especially when you are winning them for very little money. Even just the figures alone. In about a month I had a room in the apartment stacked to the point of where you could barely walk in the door and if you kjnow which figures to go after they sell for good money. Especially if you sell to people in the US. Of course there is a lot of basic figs that are worth nothing. Just gotta know which ones to go after / what sells for what. I would also have a limit of how many times I would try for something based on how much I knew I could sell it for.

    How did you sell stuff overseas and did you report the income for taxes? Did you have overseas buyers pay for the shipping?

  • @IttarraOda

    @IttarraOda

    10 ай бұрын

    @@CloudCollapse Well recently eBay has taken charge of International shipping in a recent update, they pretty much foot the bill for any custom influxes. So you pay the base price of whatever it is (Roughly $10 if doing USPS Ground Advantage) but they pay the import taxes etc. So it has become quite easier to do shipping overseas and not be double what the price actually was you paid for it.

    A nice mix of informing and hilarious. Brilliant editing. I already had a general expectation of how it'd go from playing crane games online and looking at their resell value here, but it was interesting to hear how their shop calculated values.

  • @mikecronis
    @mikecronis11 ай бұрын

    I could be mistaken, but these shops also exist at Pachinko Parlors to avoid some gambling laws: ball-bearings for plushies for back-shop cash. If our heroes didn't travel far from the UFO center, the values would be a little less than if they went to a distant collector shop, or if they used an online collector marketplace perhaps. Still, price is fair enough!
