I tried living like a Romantic Poet

Thank you so much Visit Scotland for taking us on the most wonderful trip to Scotland and letting my mum and I try living like the Romantics in such a Sublime and inspiring space. I would definitely recommend trying this routine for yourself :)

I am most inspired by William Wordsworth out of all the Romantic poets. His words just sit very well within me and his descriptions of Nature comfort me when I’m anxious. I learnt on a trip to Dove Cottage that his sister Dorothy would walk 18 miles a day! She is also very inspiring and her journals are definitely worth checking out!

My admiration for Wordsworth started in my senior year of high school when we were given a semester-long assignment to "live with a poet." We could draw a name from a bowl or choose a poet on our own. I drew Wordsworth and over that semester, I read ALL of his poetry. ALL. OF. IT. Some of it was NOT good at all, but many parts were sublime!! We also had to read a biography of the poet as well as some literary criticism written during the poet's lifetime if possible. My favorite poets are E.E. Cummings and Poe -- I prefer poets who break the rules and/or are innovative; I'd probably place Dickinson in the group to round out my top three poets. So Wordsworth, while somewhat innovative for his time, is not one of my absolute favorite poets. However, one of my favorite poetic passages of all time is from his awkwardly titled "Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour. July 13, 1798": For I have learned To look on nature, not as in the hour Of thoughtless youth; but hearing oftentimes The still sad music of humanity, Nor harsh nor grating, though of ample power To chasten and subdue.-And I have felt A presence that disturbs me with the joy Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime Of something far more deeply interfused, Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns, And the round ocean and the living air, And the blue sky, and in the mind of man: A motion and a spirit, that impels All thinking things, all objects of all thought, And rolls through all things. Therefore am I still A lover of the meadows and the woods And mountains; and of all that we behold From this green earth; of all the mighty world Of eye, and ear,-both what they half create, And what perceive; well pleased to recognise In nature and the language of the sense The anchor of my purest thoughts, the nurse, The guide, the guardian of my heart, and soul Of all my moral being. Talk about the sublime!! :D

@@RubyGranger8 I agree completely. I am so thrilled to see the works of various women writers outside of the literary canon that I was taught (I attended college in the mid-'80s and graduate school in 1989-1991) become recognized and even rediscovered. The works of Louisa May Alcott that had been written under the pseudonym "A.M. Barnard" are so wonderfully feminist and are focused on women as the protagonists. While she is best known for her children's literature, like Jo she also sold lurid stories to various magazines, and they truly are "potboilers" that kept her family afloat financially. Another favorite author of mine is the American novelist Sarah Orne Jewett; her novel Country of the Pointed Firs is simply lovely. Her novels and short stories are truly gems -- such insightful portrayals of New England people and their lives. And I think that L.M. Montgomery writes the most beautiful prose in the English language. While her Anne of Green Gables series is lovely (my favorite is Rilla of Ingleside, with its keen insights into the Great War and how people at home lived during such a cataclysmic worldwide event), her lesser-known works are even more impressive. Okay, I'll stop now because I could go on all day. ;)

Sublimity is the opposite of beauty. "Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain, and danger, that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible objects, or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime; that is, it is productive of the strongest emotion which the mind is capable of feeling." (burke, sublime and beautiful) The sublime is the unnerving paradox of perceiving something that exceeds the vastness of the mind, like the starry night sky.

Probably the only KZreadr to use the world pulchritude without defining! Must confess that when I saw the title I hoped that you would be getting a pet bear cub. 😂 I favor novels over poetry, but I do like the romantics, especially Coleridge, and took several courses on them. Did do a course on European Romanticism. The Germans were a bit earlier than the English. Looking at their works, especially the philosophy, really helps in understanding the movement. The way that they wrote in fragments helped free up some of my own writing.

Ruby this was really interesting. About a week ago I watched the movie Mary Shelly with Elle Fanning… it too included Percy Shelly and Lord Byron. An interesting tale about her trials and tribulations as a budding writer. Plus it included how she came to form her ideas about Frankenstein. Also in some parts it focused on Percy’s romantic poetry and his struggles to earn a living for him and his family. They sure did live interesting but at times problematic lives.

This is so fun! I wrote a few papers on him so obviously I've got a lot of feelings about this- so here's a huge comment, haha! It's fun to hear about him from someone who's coming at this from a literature-oriented perspective as opposed to mine which is history. I adore the Romantics but I'm also too keenly aware now that he was a pretty unsavoury person in some aspects so I'm a bit more distanced from him mentally, if that makes sense. He's still very fascinating and created some beautiful art, and the entire aura around the Romantics is just so captivating to me. In general studying him taught me a lot about how to deal with remembering people who had some great and some really bad qualities. There's a really cool new biography out that focuses on Byron's disordered eating and it's surprisingly really beautiful but huuuge. Waiting for the second part to this vlog where you get a sponsored vacay to Greece to recreate a day in his travels :D It was so fun to see Scotland from this perspective, it's just so beautiful and I can't wait to go there some day. Bonus fun fact: Byron was born with a clubfoot so on his travels he often ventured out on horseback rather than on foot but he did swim across the Hellespont which he was immensely proud of.

Very interesting and thoughtful Ruby, thanks. I think you might really benefit from a trip to South Asia, you'd find it fascinating.

You should go to Byrons pool in Cambridge, its a beautiful nature reserve. It's said that he bathed in a weir pool there while studying at Trinity College.

Benjamin Franklin's autobiography talks about diet. If I recall correctly he does mention vegetarianism and avoiding alcohol.

For anyone who doesn't know about the Lake Geneva trip that Ruby mentioned, Bram Stoker was also there, and they had a competition, supposedly to pass the time when it was raining, to see who could come up with the best ghost/horror story - as Ruby said, it was as part of this that Mary Shelley developed the idea for Frankenstein, but Stoker also developed the idea of Dracula here who is thought to be based on Lord Byron - both physically and somewhat in character as well. Sorry, just a fun little fact. I really enjoyed this video!
