I tried Hahnemühle Toned Watercolour Paper Sketchbooks! Lots of Artworks

Ойын-сауық

I've used toned paper before, but not toned WATERCOLOR paper! Around Christmas I picked up these two little sketchbooks from Hahnemühle, and today I am going to try them out with artworks using different mediums; gouache, watercolour paints, and Graphitint pencils. Does the paper actually hold up to wet media? Let's find out!
Also the brown sketchbook is toned beige paper, and not toned tan, which I kept calling it throughout the entire video, doh!
I bought the books at Senior Art Supplies, which have retail stores in Melbourne. Here is their online store with all of the books: seniorart.com.au/index.php?ma...

I like these sketchbooks or rather I love the tan but the grey is meh. I wish it was darker in value so white would pop. The grey tone is more like newsprint and dingy. I do love that tan/beige tho!

I quite like the softness of the grey but being darker would be preferable so it is a true mid tone rather than being too far on the light side. The "beige" (which I also keep calling tan, lol) is such a lovely warm tone! 💜

Hey, cute haircut! Spot-on with saying that you're "going to anyway!" with regards to starting a new sketchbook, hahaha. I agree 100% and that's why we have so many sketchbooks... and I love them all! When I moved my studio, I took a peek into my old subscription boxes and didn't find any Art Graf blocks, darn it. Oh well. Oh my goodness, I can't believe how many paintings you did in this one video - wow! While I like all your paintings, I especially like your watercolor ones. 😀

I love that you include the pieces you consider failures and that you explained why. It’s nice to be reminded that the KZreadrs who do art are not always perfect with their pieces. It’s a good reminder for us beginners that not every piece turns out perfect. Altho I thought the snail turned out well. The cow was my favorite (even thought I don’t like cows). Have you thought about using a blow dryer or a heat gun to help dry your work faster between layers? It cuts down a bit on waiting times.

Thank you, the cow was definitely the most fun because of how her expression turned out! I do have a heat gun which I use occasionally but it can mess with the paints and paper so I generally prefer to let everything dry naturally.

Oh wow, this has to be the most artwork you’ve done in a single video if I’m not mistaken!! I am thoroughly impressed. I have to say my favorites are definitely the unamoosed cow(lol), the palm tree silhouettes and the eye in graphitint. Eyes are one of my favorite subjects, but yes they take forever! I feel this way about tutorials also because it makes you feel like you shouldn’t be experimenting/learning yourself, but in reality, that’s what we all do as artists all the time argh! I think your new sketchbooks are off to a great start Becky😊

I probably should have stuck to six but it ended up being eight, which is the most arts I've done in a short time, and the videos with the most artworks overall were the two Inktober ones I did last year. But they were filmed over a much longer time! I was tired after all of them, haha!

Wow 8 different paintings, you were busy! I actually like how small they are because they don't seem as intimidating to start and finish. Is the paper in them rough like coldpressed? I'm wondering if colored pencil would layer over top watercolor on them?

Thank you, I was pretty exhausted by the end of that lot (I can hear it in my voice at the end of the video, lol). Smaller books are definitely less intimidating. The paper does have a rougher cold press texture so pencils aren't very smooth on it, but I imagine they'd be ok over the top of watercolour with a little burnishing? I guess I am adding that to the list of things to try in a future video. 😂

I think the snail came from Pixabay so it's likely to be one of the really popular images which pops up on the first page, haha. Yes I would say the paper would be much more difficult to use in larger sizes and it's most definitely not as smooth flowing as cotton paper. But in these smaller books I really didn't have any problems and the watercolour worked well enough for sketchy purpose. A fair bit of warping though!
