Not really? There's a difference between showing people how *you* do something on yourself and teaching someone how to do something in general. People often have weird quirks in the way they do things on themselves that DEFINITELY wouldn't apply to other people and shouldn't necessarily be taught lol. In the case of the video, it was both a tutorial and how she did it on herself, but that's not always the case. And maybe it shouldn't be, seeing how Safiya's hair was considerably thicker than the tutorial person's hair, and that kinda botched the process.

This is why you should always cut right BELOW the rubber band and not above. So your scissors cant go up at an angle. The rubber band acts as a leveler.

It would be best to section the hair into 3 sections; back of head, left side of head, & right side of head. Start with the back & cut below the rubber band using hair trimmers instead of shears(scissors). Then use the back as a guide to blend the sides of the head to the back.

Hairstylist here, if you pull the hair forwards like that with the pigtails, your front will be longer than the back. That’s not a good look. If you pull all of it back and have them in the back you will will get an A-line type of cut. But of course it won’t be the same as if a hairdresser cuts it. Just don’t pull it forward and you won’t get a mullet. Hope that helps!

ive cut my own hair for like 5 years now, im an old pro at my style now, i use the unicorn technique, using my bang length as my guide and cut at a slight angle so i get defined layers, always cut wet, and use a handheld mirror to clean up the back, mine is also a slightly shorter bob than saf's

I've been cutting my own hair for about a year now. Also looked at a few tutorials of pros showing simple ways to do refresh on your hair. Since then my hair has grown like 3 times my normal length, which I was never able to get longer, until I cut it my self. It is also healthier and looking pretty good. Only I do layers. Started to think about straight a few weeks back. Glad I bumped in to your video. 👍🏼

Re-watching again in 2023 and darker hair really suits you! When stylist said you look 'serious' I was thinking your are probably the least serious person I know of! I'm about to DIY my own but following Brad Mondo's 'DIY haircut' tutorial from lockdown.

I did a home hair cut on myself when lockdown first hit. Not quite as severe a change as Safia did, but a decent length change and it actually turned out okay. I highly recommend the "uniciorn horn" method as it makes seeing your hair easier and it also means that when you let the hair down that the back won't be so choppy. Definitely invest in a pair of hairdresser scissors as they are made for this kind of job, as opposed to kitchen or craft scissors. I think Saf did a good job on her first try, and i'm by no means an expert at all, just speaking from personal experience.

I followed this same tutorial the other day, haha! The quarantine is getting to us. Mine turned out decent, but I couldn't get a straight cut in the back using her angle technique. It still ended up being rounded in the back, but it's blended nicely!

I've done this before! Instead of two pigtails part your hair into four different pigtails (two in the back and one on both sides) with different angled mirrors so you can see all the sides and cut!! then trim and everything until its to your liking. :)

Well, it her first time cutting her hair. Atleast she use a tutorial on how to cut it and follow the instructions, even if it is uneven. Though, you should always seek professional help and see what tips and tricks that you can use to cut you hair properly before cutting it yourself. But overall she did a good try, and I glad she see a professional to help even it.

Thank you so very much for this video...I got "locked down" in Jakarta (where I had been visiting my daughter) on 12th March 2020...my tablets for a hypothyroid condition got over...as the months passed, my already scant hair dropped so badly that I was convinced I would soon be bald...I celebrate my 64th birthday at the end of January and was desperate to look decent...searched on KZread, found your video, watched it, and did the deed...successfully...you cannot imagine how much better I feel now...God Bless you! 🙏👍👏❤️

@@Sailor.Catracha Which is fine! She is in her happy place with Julien and her dogs and it's super cute and cozy. If she ever decides to take the ratchet salon on the road with other KZreadr's I agree heavily it will be freaking awesome seeing those collabs.

I use a natural bristle paint or basting brush, and a wide tooth comb to distribute the dye. Your chosen color is gorgeous on you.

I used this vid to know how to cut my own hair - worked so well i didn't even have to get it touched up. thanks for being the guinea pig Saf!

Never thought i'd say "Oh no..." when clicking on a Safiya video but here we are 😂

My 8 year old sister wanted to cut her hair she had a lot of hair 2 days ago she cut her hair into a bob and donated most of the chopped off hair and donated it to people with cancer.

Graet video glad to see you were mostly happy with the result. thanks for the tweaks for how to salvage the wobbly bits. I have thick hair so that scissor stuck is likely to happen to me too ;/

My mom asked me to cut her hair and it turned out like Farquaad's hair too. But it grew and it looks okay now. 😂😂

Usually when I do my own hair trimming what I do is a multiple pigtail/ponytail approach. I trim the whole thing in one high ponytail and then get the length I want with the two pigtails before putting it in a low ponytail and cutting it. Makes it more even in the back and easier to trim all around. This looks pretty good for a first go though!

I only have done this for a long trim and cutting below the rubber bands. You have to be able to see what you are doing really well which is why it's harder to do a shorter cut on yourself.

I love your videos Safiya, they're always so entertaining. I cut my own short hair and it seems to work ok but I don't have a blunt cut so it's not so long and short bits aren't so obvious....I always thought Lord Farhquar was quite stylish actually, in a short, big chinned kinda way!

Love, love this tutorial! My hair is long, with Covid19 and the shutdown of many businesses, I have my husband cut my hair. I wash, brush out, and he uses the leveler in the garage against my back to cut the hair straight across. Overall, hair length managed!

To anyone watching this video and watching her dye her hair.....PLEASE do the patch test first!!! I made a mistake and used black dye on my hair and had an allergic reaction. My face swelled and my neck and the back of my ears started leaking. My scalp was ruined for a week and a half. I had to go to the ER twice and I ended up on 5 medications (4antibiotics and a steroid including a steroid shot and an antibiotic shot)...My face broke out too....My final diagnosis was cellulitis and skin dermatitis! There's an ingredient in black hair dyes called PPD and some people are really sensitive to that ingredient. Please research before dying your hair. Hope I save someone a headache and an ER visit 🖤🖤🖤

This is indeed important, please do your research into potential allergens! If you're using a new brand or color, put a dab on the back of your hand, wrist, or forearm and wait half an hour to be sure you won't have a reaction to it. It's going to leave a temporary stain, but it's worth saving the time and chaos of a full strand test or worse if you do have a reaction.

I used the same method to chop off like 70% of my hair last summer. I thought it looked okay but when I went to the hair stylist she made it very evident I fucked up lol

So i got cut at work (filmset) by an awardwinning hairdresser- a sleek bob. Then a few months later i went to one at home for a quick touch up on the ends. She asked when i got it cut last. I said, a few months, and that i usually do it myself -bc i do usually do so, but she looked at my award-winner made cut and said "i can tell." And im sitting there thinking like "bitch no you cannot." I told the award winner the same thing and she just shrugged and said i did a neat job.

Hairdressers live out by making us believe we look awful by doing their jobs ourselves... if we believed we could do a great job they wouldn't have their jobs.

You gotta trim by feel! Bring your fingers until you feel the edges of the shorter bits that you want to trim to, and then just trim RIGHT along your fingers. Don't even gotta look at it (I don't). And you have to go little by little. Do NOT bring in as much hair as you can between your fingers. Just do like centimeter or inch wide clumps at a time.

I watched this and laughed like I haven't laughed this whole quarantine. It's a cautionary tale for us considering cutting our hair but it's also fearless. Thank you!
