I think this is really a missed opportunity for Amazon, it’s like they created it and then tried to find a use for it. I really wanted it for my business and parents as a telepresence device when I can zoom myself in and check up on my parents and employees. They missed this market by making it for recreational/entertainment.

I helped on development of this thing a few months before it came out ! it’s so cool to see people reviewing it and it out in the real world now :D loved my prototype even though it malfunctioned a lot lol

Yes, I completely agree with your point about it sounding and being too much like Alexa when it comes to 'conversation'. Let's face it, it's like Echo Show 8 on wheels, that's all it amounts to at the moment. The manufacturers really need to work on that to make it different from Alexa and more to the point, it needs to be much more conversational, almost like having a conversation with a human being, that's where it needs to be at. Thanks for your review.

Agree not worth right now

It’s cute and I’d say a nice stepping stone into household robots but until it can move upstairs and actually do tasks. It’s just a glorified Alexa/indoor camera.

Has anyoine figured out to get this to work with Alexa multi-room music? I love the way this sounds but I have 10 other speakers in my multi-room config. Major bummer if I can't add my new pet.

"I think a much better option is Amazon's Ring Always Home Cam" This is actually hilarious. After beta testing the Ring Always Home Cam, I thought Amazon Astro was a better idea. It seems like whatever you try, you think the opposite device is theoretically better, lol. I haven't tried the Astro yet though.

I finally got an invite but now it’s $1500. I was really on the fence when it was $1000 but I love technology and getting jump start on future tech. Was one of the first people to have an iPhone but I feel this should be $599 at most

I own one. Additional to your criticism, which I find very accurate (glitchy, limited usefulness) I would add the limited battery life. On average, my astro only lasts less than 3 hours before going back to the charging station. Other problem is that sometimes runs hot to the touch. Amazon sent a replacement, but it runs hot too. I bought an IR camera just to be able to measure the emissive temperature on the device, on average runs 120F, but it goes higher when you are playing music, specially at high volume (of course this decreases the battery life too, by a lot). Just imagine how hot that thing gets inside. I dont think astro is worth a thousand dollars (plus taxes). it just feels like an Echo Show with wheels. For that kind of money, it's just a glorified toy. My roborock vacuum comes with cameras, you can remotely activate those cameras and instruct the vacuum to move, but with the added benefit of cleaning your house. It would have more sense for astro to perform that kind of tasks.

Thank you for your review! You did a great job - I wish you did more things besides Tesla :-D It looks like from your review that Astro is an excellent start - they would be stupid to cancel Astro because robots are the future, especially for elder care. They will no doubt build a lot more functionality - though they could do for elders with all of the Alexa’s and have not which is inexplicable to me honestly. Medication reminders that require a confirmation after they are taken, etc. etc. and one was developed during a coding contest for Alexa and then never released 🙄So, they better get on it with the Astro! Quick question - if you get calls, messages, etc, will Astro let you know and allow you to answer through the Alexa? For example, if someone can’t find their phone, or move to get it in time (elderly especially)? I’m assuming it will do that if one drops in or calls through Alexa. If someone could answer their phone through Astro, that would be great because 1) it could move around with the person and it’s multidirectional mics works better for conversations than the cell phone on speaker. & 2) The Alexa’s are louder as well for the hard of hearing and great for this but they don’t move so they don’t work as well for younger people. Lastly, regarding elder care (but also forgetful people like me!) they need to build in functionality which would remind the owner that someone called/texted/emailed and ask if they’d like to call them back now, and then initiate that call if the person says yes. This functionality is key to elder care and is built into the robots being developed for elders in the EU.

1:38 looks like LIDAR map - means he scans first all house and then knows how to move - robot "thinking" and move (wheel) so can't work long - battery problem

Sorry. This us a $400 robot at best. And at the $1600 they offered as a selling price in my invite, it should at least have all of the kinks worked out of it.

AIBO doesn’t have half of the sensors or real world application of Astro? AIBO is cool, but Astro is a legitimate step toward in house robots that can actually perform valuable tasks.

Multiple floors probably is the worst part of this device. There are many people who don't live in a huge long open floor one story house. Robot vacs are multi-floor so I don't understand how this 1500.00 unit can't. It doesn't make sense. Also how can you not just change the voice? I don't think amazon is listening or spending much money on this unit. It hasn't changed since the launch for the 80% complaints.

$1500? No way. Loona is far less.
