A WOMAN claims that her pet monkey has stopped her from getting a boyfriend - but she’ll never give him up. Stephanie Fusco grew up dreaming of owning a pet monkey, and her dreams came true two years ago. The 26-year-old's monkey, Alexander Laurence Fusco, also known as Xander, is a white faced capuchin lives with her in North Carolina, where it is legal to own certain exotic pets. Capuchins are medium-sized New World monkeys, native to Central America, however their intelligence and adaptability has made them sought after pets. Unsurprisingly domesticating a monkey hasn’t always been the easiest of tasks and Stephanie admits that her dedication to Xander the monkey has even affected her dating life. Terry Melvin well considering the alternative for him, it's very much so living. Canines are not necessary if he isn't living in the wild. They are used when fighting primarily. Also being neutered just decreases his need and want to mate. In actuality it is much kinder to his psyche than to let him be a virile male and then deny him a mate, THAT would be cruel. You really have to look at the bigger picture when it comes to primate ownership.🐒

So many ignorant comments from uneducated people!! Xander was born in captivity to be a pet. He was not born in the wild and stolen from his mom. This is the only mom he knows. He wouldn't survive in the wild alone. Don't make assumptions. Yes, in other countries there are people that steal monkeys from their mom's in the wild which is inhumane. They are treated poorly. They are abused. But this is *_not_* the case with Xander. He is well loved and cared for. He is not locked alone in a cage all day. She is very active with him, very social, gives him plenty to do to keep him happy & occupied, etc. He is not neglected, abuse, depressed, suffer from being stolen from his mom in the wild, etc. He knows nothing more then to be a pet living in a home with a human mom. This is all he knows. It is no different then you owning a parrot, dog, cat, etc. They are bred in captivity to be domestic pets, not wild animals.

@@soldatolacrimosa1868 There's a huge difference between cats and dogs, which naturally become independent from their mothers pretty early on (although 8 weeks old as is typical is definitely too early for separation), and a primate like a monkey who by nature will rely on their mother for MUCH longer, and both the mother and baby form a deep emotional bond with each other. There's a reason primates don't have litters, and usually have either single babies or twins - it's because primate babies are so dependent on their mothers for so long, thus nature selected single births and deep emotional bonds. So when a tiny infant monkey is taken from his mother to be sold as a pet, there are two victims. Both mother and baby are traumatized. The baby, hopefully, recovers and re-bonds with the human - but it doesn't make it okay. Cats/dogs? They walk away as soon as they can wean the litter. Birds? As soon as it can leave the nest, buh bye. Reptiles? They often don't even bother to stick around after laying the eggs Amphibians/fish? Squirt out the eggs and cya Primates are very different, and are much closer to the relationship between a human mother and baby than they are to any other pet example you could compare them to.

Lu Kaplan very true indeed that having a monkey as a family member is expensive like with human children, takes up a whole lot of one's life time like with human children, and involves a huge demand of absolute, unconditional, ultra patient dedication just like with human children. See, having a monkey as a family member is just like having a human child in one's life, an extended child who will live and die as one. That is the major difference. On the flip side, a monkey will NOT cost millions in college tuition, amongst other issues. There is always a give & take with these choices. So, if a monkey OR a child ends up in the hands of the WRONG person, it SURE will be a disaster. Hence the sociopaths out there doing mass shootings, serial rapes, et al... The point is, ANY dependent life that needs the help of a human being to live with dignity will turn out A DISASTER in the "wrong" hands, be it a dog, a cat, a hamster, AND a _plant_ . I honestly don't see the point with the insistence _against_ monkey ownership when we, as a species have a track record of not being good parents to anything... There will be good animal owners and bad ones. There is way too much hype surrounding "not owning monkeys". It helps scaring off bad humans who will just turn around and be bad to dogs and cats... 😒

For everyone saying this is wrong, yea it's a bit unnatural and I don't agree being a monkey breeder should be normal out there. But as for Xander, he looks really happy and comfortable where he is. In the real world he would be out fighting and risking his life to survive, I'm sure this is much easier for him. As of evolution, just because a few small monkeys are kept as pets doesn't necessarily mean they will evolve to be domesticated animals. To the few people that do have them, as long as they are well taken care of and as happy as Xander, I wouldn't make a huge fuss. Although there are many uneducated owners and breeders out there that should not be dealing with such responsibility because they could be taking care of the monkey wrong which could be dangerous for both them and the monkey. Make sure you know what your signing up for! Xander is such a cutie!! ☺

Many posters here comment on how well they perceive the monkey’s care from a HUMAN perspective. However, no one seems to questions life from the monkey’s perspective. Once the monkey achieves sexual maturity they become untamable usually by age three. The socialization monkeys receive from each other cannot be replicated by humans. This absence will cause psychological trauma for the animal. They will always require the care of a toddler throughout their lives. These monkeys can live decades.

MonkeyXander but surely these wild animals belong in the wild. Surely you would not reccomended others to keep wild animals as pets, captive bred or not. If the demand is not there, then they can't be exploited by other responsible owners and all monkeys can have a more natural life in the wild. They can't exactly climb trees, meet other species and roam for miles from your house. Clearly, monkeys prefer a wild life as a wild caught one would never adapt to a caged lifestyle.

So Xander was only allowed to be with his mother for three weeks. I've heard that monkeys spend their first year with their mother and this only got three weeks. Monkeys in their natural habitat live in colonies with complex relationships. I wonder what all the disruption and separation emotionally, developmentally and psychologically.
