I Travelled 8,000 MILES For ANTS!!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video, my friends and I went to Sydney, Australia! Even though we were only able to search within the city, we managed to find some bucket-list ants! Rhytidoponera, Polyrhachis, Myrmecia, and more all within this video!

They really are a cool genus! I was surprised at how common they were in Australia, the little buggers were absolutely everywhere. Most of them weren't as impressive as the major I featured in the video, though.

I’m finally getting to your Australia videos, and you’re killin it already! So many cool species in here, I need to seriously step up my Australian ant ID game. How are you identifying all of these guys? I love the Rhytidoponera, such a pretty color and a great specific epithet. This deserves way more views!

We were able to ID most of the ants we found to genus-level in the field, but much of the species-level identifications were from the help of ant identifiers on iNaturalist. I think I would have been able to ID many species myself by sorting through keys and AntWeb specimens, but more often than not they beat me to it.
