Thanks for taking the time to make a follow up review on the Shimoda Urban. Your initial review along with others during the Kickstarter campaign was what made me pick up the 25 L as well. It just seemed like it checked off all the boxes. But I ran into the same... I wouldn't say problems. But rather annoyances (?) as you and others after using it for a few months. I do feel that the bag doesn't have much space for things other than cameras. The little extra compartments the bag offers are fairly impractical, especially the front pouch (it can't store much and is so tight you cant see what's in there). It feels more like I'm walking around with a camera box with straps (like in the anime Demon Slayer, Tanjiro is carrying his sister Nezuko in a wooden box). But it sure does feel well built!

Thanks for your comment. I still do think it’s a great camera bag and very well built. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ll never find the perfect bag so I am glad that I have a few to choose from. In my next long trip, I’ll be trying out my Brevite Jumper and see how that does while traveling.

Thanks for the honest review 🙏 No bag is perfect and I’d rather know about the downsides of a bag when comparing to buy than only the praises.

I just got mine yesterday, after some others mentioned that the bags was comfy even packed out. I didn't fully pack mine, so now I am very curious. I did get it mostly as an EDC bag, but I am usually bringing a camera with a lens attached, lens, flash, and gorillapod.

Great review Amy. Sounds like your Shimoda Explore bag would be better used as a EDC bag as you mentioned. I’ve yet to get mine out on a shoot yet. But I know I’ll have to be very choosy about what lenses I take with me. (How was the zipping and unzipping experience?) 💜💜💜

  • @AmesWay

Hey TC! Thanks for watching. The zippers are great! Biggest downside for me is not standing up on its own. I love a bag that does. It’s a great bag overall. I love how my gear fits inside. I’ve only taken it on this one trip so far so I have to test it some more.

I must have missed it, what size was that? I'm assuming 25L b/c it didn't fit under the seat. TBH, I wanted to like this bag, but after lots of reviews I have dropped this off my list.

One thing I didn't hear is what size the bag is. I've been waffling between the 20 and 25. I like the 20 for keeping me from carrying too much gear but worry that it might be a little too small. Actually, I think I need to 25 to support my 16" MBP. 🙂

The Shimoda Urban Explore is more akin to a day pack than an international travel bag. The Explore V2 or Action X V2 offer more useful features for global travel.

Did you try removing the rain cover from its pocket to see if the bag could stand up on its own without it? I heve the 20 liter but it definitely has some major flaws; I ordered internationally so I had to pay duties and shipping and that was not cheap, other wise I'd return it, it definitely disappointed me.

  • @AmesWay

I have not but that’s a good idea! Thanks I’ll give it a try. That sucks about the fees. I ordered during the kickstarter so no returns allowed either way.

Removing the rain cover and placing it elsewhere allows my bag to sit upright. I keep it on the little space above the camera cube for easier access too.

get some socks or something and see if you can put them in the rain cover pouch on the bottom. You may be able to position them to where the bag will stand on its own.
