I Trained with a Shaolin Warrior Monk for a Week

China’s Shaolin Temple is renowned as the birthplace of kung fu, and warrior monks have been training there for thousands of years as a way to cultivate both their spiritual and practical fighting skills. Now I do CrossFit workouts pretty regularly and I’m decently fit but recently I thought it would be interesting to see what it would be like to instead train and live like a Shaolin warrior monk.
Now fortunately there is actually a real-life 34th generation Shaolin monk who runs his own temple only a few blocks away from my apartment in NYC. According to his Wikipedia page he can break rocks with his skull, deflect blades with his skin, and sleep while hanging upside down from a tree branch. I’ve met him before and I can tell you he’s the real deal. So I decided to spend a week with him learning the ways of the Shaolin warrior monks.
Here’s a link to the Shaolin Temple website if you’re interested in taking classes with them: usashaolintemple.org/

@@kaylons My point is that it has always been advertised in movies and TV that it is one of the deadliest fighting styles. This is a lie. But apparently you, like a lot of ppl that like to romanticize Kung-Fu and the Shaolin mysticism, prefer the lie. Most ppl get into martial arts to learn self defense. It’s not a narrow point of view, it is in fact, a statistical view. My friend used to fight full contact point fighting. I went to his competitions a few times. I never saw any, but he informed me that once in a while, a Kung-Fu school will compete. He told me they always get destroyed. And BTW, MMA isn’t one style. That’s THE point. There is no “one” style superior to others. These guys train in boxing, kick-boxing, BJJ, Taekwondo and other effective fighting styles. The more modern schools of Kung-Fu in China are now adapting their classes. They are now fully aware that the old ways aren’t up to task.

Even though it’s great mental discipline, and teaches a peaceful co-existence philosophy, it doesn’t translate very well to actual hand-to-hand combat(fighting). It may look amazing in movies and be steeped in a whole lot of tradition, it’s pretty ineffective. Xu Xiaodong (Chinese MMA fighter) exposed it years ago by thoroughly beating the crap out Shaolin Masters, and got banned from all Chinese social media and from being able to use public transportation there. He showed the world that just because you can hang from a pole just using your ankles, that doesn’t matter at all when someone puts you in a “Rear Naked Choke”. As the center of Chan Buddhism, the Shaolin Temple attracted many emperors' attention in China's history. During the Tang dynasty 618-907 AD Empress Wu Zetian (AD 625-705) paid several visits to the Shaolin Temple discussing Chan philosophy with high monk Tan Zong. According to legend, Emperor Taizong granted the Shaolin Temple extra land and a special "imperial dispensation" to consume meat and alcohol during the Tang dynasty. If true, this would have made Shaolin the only temple in China that did not prohibit alcohol. Regardless of historical veracity, these rituals are not practiced today.[4] This legend is not corroborated in any period documents, such as the Shaolin Stele erected in 728 AD. The stele does not list any such imperial dispensation as reward for the monks' assistance during the campaign against Wang Shichong, only land and a water mill are granted.[5] The founder of the Yuan dynasty, Kublai Khan (AD 1215-1294) ordered all Buddhist temples in China to be led by the Shaolin Temple; eight princes during the Ming dynasty converted to Shaolin.

@@liamsomeone6333 my native language is Spanish, but I tend to think and speak to myself in English. I usually attribute this to the cultural differences that each language can bring into my speech, and hence thinking in English becomes lighter than Spanish. It is also true that after I consume media in a different language my brain gets used to it and automatically switches for some time. Like after watching anime I start thinking in Japanese, or after watching a Kdrama or listening to a lot of Kpop I switch to Korean for some time.

First: Depends on what you call fluent for that question to come up. Being able to get one's message across but sprinkled with lots of mistakes is rather not the level for this aspect. Second: Most of the time I am thinking in my mother tong German, but when I use English for some prolonged time my brain kinda switches. Do not ask in which language I am dreaming, I never remember to have had dreams at all, so I do not know that.

So I speak 4 languages (Spanish, English, Italian and French) and it’s really random the way my brain works. I’m a linguistics student so I love all the little differences that come w each language. I’ve dreamt in all 4, usually will switch back and forth between them based on my emotion or what I’m doing in my day but default is always English, my native language. I work in a very multicultural restaurant so I’ll switch between all 4 several times during a shift when talking to different people. Afterwards something called language fatigue sets in which is when ur brain is tired from using a second language

According to the Continued Biographies of Eminent Monks (645 AD) by Daoxuan, Shaolin Monastery was built on the north side of Shaoshi, the central peak of Mount Song, one of the Sacred Mountains of China, by Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei dynasty in 477 AD, to accommodate the Indian master beside the capital Luoyang city. Yang Xuanzhi, in the Record of the Buddhist Monasteries of Luoyang (547 AD), and Li Xian, in the Ming Yitongzhi (1461), concur with Daoxuan's location and attribution. The Jiaqing Chongxiu Yitongzhi (1843) specifies that this monastery, located in the province of Henan, was built in the 20th year of the Taihe era of the Northern Wei dynasty, that is, the monastery was built in 495 AD.
