I Trained My Dog to Guard Ducks and Geese (He's a real Livestock Guardian Dog!)

Let me show you how I trained my dog to guard our ducks, geese, and chickens. Training a dog to protect (and not kill!) a bird is difficult, but our farm wouldn't survive without a livestock guardian dog.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I've never heard it explained so well about the working dog. Most people just don't understand why they need to be left alone and just let them do what their instincts tell them to do. It's in their genes to be a livestock guardian dog not a pet they make horrible pets if you don't have every waking hour to give them they bond with livestock and they don't leave for a 9 to 5 job

Toby is an amazing dog for the farm. I feel so proud watching him in action and the great job you've done with him and it's nice that you can walk us through some of his life and his role on the farm. My Molly is an Old English Sheepdog puppy and she's 6 months old. I'm still in the process of training her to behave with the ducks. The chickens she's fine, but the ducks get loud and start to run and fly away from her...then of course she chases. Work in progress, but these things don't happen overnight. Toby is a dog that Molly can look up to. Sheepdogs are amazingly instinctive and Molly herds me all the time. Absolutely love this video Morgan.

I love your approach to training Toby, my family raised cattle dogs for years, and I always found that a stern word goes farther than a blow to the dog, and at the end of the day it only makes your dog afraid of you. In my personal experience training dogs I’ve always found it’s far easier to train a dog to start a new behavior than to stop a negative one. I used to have this one dog who would always lose his mind barking when we brought him food, and instead of scolding him for barking I trained him to go grab his favorite chew toy and bring it to me before I would give him his food so he couldn’t bark with the toy in his mouth, and he’d go right to eating after dropping it in my hand, I think you did an amazing job training Toby he’s an incredibly calm and competent guard dog

Toby is such an awesome dog, and your excellent training really shines when you see Toby asserting himself with body language with the birds instead of barking at them or going after them. It can be tough, especially with aggressive birds, but Toby is perfect!

Toby's on his way to becoming a great work dog and friend thanks to you, Morgan. I appreciate the diligence you put into research and your own training to be a good dog owner. Often people get a dog or other animal and never think of how they have to control or change their own behavior. That makes it really hard for the animal to understand and learn. Considering this is your first "student," I'm sure it was difficult not to spoil him. I'm impressed with how Toby appears to be developing into a valuable asset. You deserve a "teacher (trainer) of the year" award!

Toby is giving the geese his "not now" look. I am just waiting for the Pablo and Toby adventures around the farm (in a Charlotte's Web style for TV). Give Toby one good scratch behind the ears from me.

Thank you so much for sharing this! We just got our maremma this week, and only have ducks and chickens. It's so hard to find info on training them to poultry. We're having a hard time training our pup with the ducks but it's a breeze with the chickens.
