    Eddie once said that he realised he couldn't out-train his competitors - Brian and Thor were working super hard too - but he could put more effort than them into his recovery. Smart move.

    😂Eddie tore a bicep leading up to the match, TBF. Excuses aside-- Eddie just wanted to knock Thors ass down, and so he trained for that. Thor trained to NOT get knocked down, still got knocked down twice, and won because he was able to avoid every haymaker Eddie was throwin'. 😂

    Eddie is not lying about the sleep aspect. Even without a cold plunging, just spending like good 15 - 30 minutes in hot ass sauna and then just showering and washing yourself afterwards. The relaxed feeling you have afterwards is just something else and you sleep so well. At least thats my experience with saunas living my whole life in Finland where sauna is a cultural thing. Also no eletrical sauna beats an og woodfire sauna stove.

    If the hot cold helps with sleep, that's good enough reason for an elite athlete to get it. Even if the science isn't there for the physiological part, but just better sleep helps recovery so much. I'm generally skeptical about most things, but as an elite athlete, you really gotta do whatever you need to in order to get that edge. Love the content!

  • @MellonVegan

    @MellonVegan

    6 ай бұрын

    Yeah, that's what I thought, too. With a scientific education, I couldn't randomly do stuff (that is stressful and expensive and thus possibly even detrimental) just because someone says so. There are so many variables, one person doing sth. isn't good evidence. But if it helps with something as basic and as important as sleep (which I somewhat struggle with), that is huge. A thing I have personally found (and I think this is backed by evidence) is that this hot cold stuff helps with soreness (just the pain part of it). I used to do them sometimes whenever my hamstrings were just beyond sore and not feeling like I couldn't even walk certainly helped with the mental side of training. If you look at it that way, it's more of an individual thing of "does this specifically help someone who has some specific needs" instead of just being a blanket recommendation.

  • @mxcafx

    @mxcafx

    6 ай бұрын

    @@MellonVegan that's a good point. Like if you can get the heat and cold to permeate, like really permeate, there could be a physiological response, whatever that may be. I do trust Hooper to take a scientific approach to anything he buys. As a skeptic, I stay away from any of those pseudo scientific "recovery" things, but like what Penn Jillette said about his weight loss "half of what I did was bullshit, and half worked. We're just not sure which half it is yet". What we want is to have Mitch as strong as he can be, for as long as he can, and do it without any major injury. Do I think he can win 5 WSM titles? Absolutely. I will guarantee that most of what Eddie does is bullshit, but we're not sure exactly what part. Cheers.

    Its such an awesome setup to have in ones backyard. I think the sauna for sure is the thing easiest to actually stick to and do. Its also one of the most researched thing and really good for health. Regarding cold plunge all the studies are on plunges not showers. Worth remembering. Also one must remember that the cold interfere with hypertrophy. So its a tool that need to be used right. As far as I know the sauna wont interfere with hypertrophy. Might actually improve it due to the increase in blood flow. However it can be a strain so could affect training energy if used incorrect.

To me if you do more 2 or more times you will feel it more that tingling feeling over all. Hot & Cold therapy does work. It can do wonders waking up the whole body and system. After one day I can feel it all over for up to 5-7 days. It can be that strong. But must spend a few minutes in both several times. Enjoy

    I have heard sports scientists say that the cold training removes some of the growth stimulus from training but does allow you to train/perform more often. So check into that and see what you think but the take home message seemed to be to use it for quick recovery between events but not during preparatory training. I'm sure that play off between session growth stimulus and session frequency is something each individual could play around with to suit themselves though.

    You should try sitting in a flowing river with Wim Hof in water that is just a couple of degrees and sit in it for 10 minutes. The feeling afterwards is incredible. I've done something similar in Sweden where we plunge into lakes in the early spring, the water is around 3-4 C and you stay in for 12-15 minutes. After the intense feeling of a million needles subsides and the fire in your core is at max you feel as if you are taking a bath in summer when the water is around 20 C. It's crazy hard in the beginning but like Eddie said. You sleep like a baby. Your body also gets way better at fighting of viral infections but there is so many other health benefits. Both physical and mental.

    Mitch, if you do go out and buy yourself a sauna and maybe make yourself a cold tub, with your background, you could shed some light on the science of it. As far as I know, there is a LOT of falsehoods people say about cold baths, but there is still some benefit, even if only "psychological" from being uncomfortable and going through "shock",

    There's some who say cold doesn't do as much as hot on it's own. Saunas are great. The swimming is cool but I'd have to be convinced not to have an indoor pool or something instead. I guess the idea is it's like a treadmill for swimming.

    Forget the physical side, I'm pretty sure the hot/cold therapy is doing more benefits on the mental side of things. When you go through this daily, you become stronger mentally to overcome the pain you feel.

    Willpower/toughness is a finite resource. Doing very hard things just for the sake of it will just make you more irritable and lazy the rest of your day.
