The reason the burner looks purple is because it is emitting a lot of infrared light, which modern digital cameras pick up as a bluish color, unless there is an IR filter on the camera. And the reason the coil glows red is because it is so hot that it starts giving off visible light (this is also how incandescent light bulbs work). I'm guessing Kay is filming on a cell phone, hence no IR filter

There's nothing but darkened glass between the coil and the camera. It's purple because the camera sensor is getting washed out by infrared light (heat) which shows up as blue on cameras when it's really intense. Combined with the red visible light from the coils, and it shows up as purple. Fun fact, if you have a TV remote or something, you can see the infrared LED flashing on your phone's camera as well.

I think Kay was under the impression that the rice would get cooked in the frying process. Like she just didn't know fried riced required cooked leftover white rice. How she didn't watch one of the *thousands* of videos showing you how to cook fried rice is beyond me. Like..how does that happen. She's reading some kind of instructions. She says "it says to mix the chicken and the egg". So she's reading some kind of instructions...where is she getting it from? Surely it would tell her to use left over rice? Maybe it did and she figured "fresh" is better? There's so many questions.

I'm guessing whatever recipe she used would specify cooked rice, but she didn't notice the 'cooked' bit. It will also have told her to get the pan up to heat then add the garlic, but she didn't figure that she needed to have chopped the garlic before the pan got up to heat So she spends all that time chopping the garlic while the pan gets way too hot, hence the garlic turning to charcoal.

I will say that she must have done a lot of things right in mothering because her son was so pleasant about doing the taste test on camera and was really nice in his comments about it. They seem like nice people with a great family relationship. I could see someone in a rural area of the UK almost never eating rice, btw. A lot of white people (even here in a very multicultural city - Vancouver) that I've dined with just don't really get the idea of eating rice in some Asian and Peruvian food (they just say they don't really like it, but it goes further than that because the food we were eating needed the rice for balance). Lots of people out there just don't cook rice for themselves.

My very elderly mother STILL does that, but she serves it in the recycled (hand washed) old plastic meat trays that she used to microwave it. With no sense of timing, she starts "cooking" up to two hours before dinner time, and by the time the trays get onto the table many of the items have be re-cooked 3 or 4 times. .... For example, beans (cut about 1/2" long) look like little shriveled up lawn clippings. Furthermore, whatever is not eaten stays in the (now melted) meat tray and gets placed back into the fridge, uncovered. A few days later it reappears in another batch, after multiple bouts of reheating. If there is not enough, she adds more on the top then inflicts another few full cooking times on it! ... And celery... she cuts across the entire thing into 1/8" (3mm) slices, starting from the leafy end. At the beginning of the week, it's just the tiny bitter stalks as well as any attached leaves. After a couple of hours of additional microwaving, the stench permeates the entire house! The end result is a tray of the most disgusting dark green objects that are absolutely inedible. Since nobody can eat it, she puts it back in the fridge so it can have the same abuse done to it a few days later 😢 ... The only solution is to sneak it off the dining table into a small rubbish bin that I keep under the dining table. I promise you that everything that I have described is 100% true, however I must also assure you that's only a few examples of the crimes that she commits against food.

The "purple" stove is actually because the hot coils start emitting light that goes into the infrared spectrum. We can't see it with our eyes, that's why the same stove would look glowing red in person, but cameras can pick it up as this purple hue. You can point a camera into a running toaster to the same effect I think.

A slight correction for the middle finger fact: The thing you are thinking about is the British two finger gesture, which is middle and pointing finger, because those were the two fingers used to draw a bow. During the war, whenever the French captured a British archer, they would cut off these two fingers to prevent them from doing archery again. The two fingers are a very British "fuck you" gesture. The middle finger is rude because it makes your hand look like a dick.

It is a ceramic cooktop. So glass and infrared/heat producing coil. Which then heats pans. The digital camera catches also lot of infrared wavelength which reproduces as that or some other colour.

Turkish pilav doesn't even use onions or garlic. You wash the rice, leave it to the side, then heat up the butter/ sunflower oil and brown some orzo, or short wheat vermicelli, add your rice and coat the rice with the oil, add stock or water 2/3 ratio or the finger method. Leave it to cook for about 12 mins. you can replace the orzo with chickpeas. Fancy onion, garlic sautéed rice pilav is for celebrations.

Chef Paul is 100% right. I’ve said it myself: there is some sort of _deficit_ there when someone chooses to barrel in to make fried rice without bothering to search basic steps. To take a page from Chef Brian, I’ll be nice and leave it at that! Gotta show Chef Paul Kay’s marginally better second Special Fried Rice attempt.

You're one of those idiots that thinks subs are worth anything, wake up. The 'content' that she makes is borderline dangerous. She is very sweet but that kind of ignorance for basic cooking techniques will get someone very sick or worse someday.

I believe she is using a ceramic stove. Powered by electricity like an induction "burner" big difference is that the Hotplate will actually get blazing hot. Induction moves particles in the pot/pan and that produces heat. (Heat is essentially just a measure of how actively an element is currently vibrating on an atomic level)

Slight correction on Frenchie's "Origin of giving the middle finger" - that story is actually about the "V" sign. It's pretty much just the peace sign. The story is correct, though. For archery you often use your index, middle and ring finger (sometimes only index and middle. Also, tge Mongols, Chinese, Koreans and some other cultures used their thumbs. The former is called the Mediteranean draw and the latter the Thumb draw). The English longbowmen were a bane to a lot of French soldiers. Unless you had fancy pants plate armor - you're gonna get shishkebabed. The story says the French started cutting off the index and middle finger off of archers to prevent them from shooting again. So the English showed them in a V sign to say "Oi cunt! Come and get them!" At least, that's the story. No idea of it's true or if the middle finger came from the V. This has been archery facts.

This story is apocryphal. The middle finger was used by the Classical Greeks to indicate intercourse, sometimes playfully, sometimes as a threat.
