As you get older like me (66), you'll start to realise that water/mud isn't all it's cracked-up to be for 4 wheelin'. I've done all that shit and I've grown to be smart enough to go home, when somebody says: "go hard or go home"!!! There's no shame in turning around or taking a chicken track.

Yep anytime your dash lights come on like a christmas tree in an 80 after doing mud or water etc it's nearly always alternator related. If you do a longer trip where you know you'll be doing plenty of water crossings but mainly mud holes etc it's a good idea to take a spare alternator!! keep up the good work guys!!!

Alternator is probably half a million k's old with only a smidge of brushes left in it. Denso is the best hands down, get your one rebuilt or rebuild it yourself, would make a cool video to see, we are all here watching because you blokes love saving a buck. Spray your engine down before hitting the mud next time, I cover everything in silicone spray, keep spare relays, the 80s love frying out headlight relays when they get wet, keep a set of belts, I found when one died on the track, the backup soon let go too or in some cases one belt blows and takes the other in its path. Miss my HDJ80, got a factory turbo 100 with an FTE now since having kids etc, I can relate, I didn't want to damage my hdj, I serviced it every 5000 and never governor bounced it. It will last you a long time if you look after it, just think one day you can jump in and take it to the Cape, she'll always bring you home.

Good luck guys, keep up the great work, love the videos

more than likely the alt would have just had a bit of mud in the brushes. couple light taps on the back would probably have gotten it working again for a while. the mud makes the brushes get stuck and not hold a good connectiion, tapping the back can make them wiggle loose and get better connection. common issue with most 4wds when mudding. last couple of suzuki vitaras i have had, the brushes were in their own sealed capsual so mud couldnt get jammed in them. made them amazing for hitting the deep mud.

The Achilles heel of the 80. Was the same on my 4 Runnner. I used to mud bog it every weekend and the alternator would give me grief from time to time. I got a sealed unit for a decent price and never had another issue. The 4.0L Jeeps suffered from the exact same problem as me.

Always good to follow your gut feeling if you think something is too big or could cause reckless damage. You can still have fun, way better than being stuck in the house. Worst comes to worse, just swap batteries to get yourself out. Alternators playing up is pretty typical after driving through mud.

Hey mate, check that all your inner guard linings are still there. I wouldn't expect your alternator to be getting wet from what i saw you were driving on the video. In my 80 i have had water and mud over the bonnet heaps of times and the alternator has survived. Also check the condition of the 3 pin plug on the back of the alternator. They flog out when the vehicles get older and can cause issues

You need a Mitsubishi alternator. My father has a Mitsubishi with 543,000km on clock with the original one in it. The alternator was rebuilt at 132,000km after it was converted to LPG to handle the extra power draw. The vehicle drives through flood waters often as I live in a flood zone. The water level is between a half a foot to a foot deep in places. It amazing how long it has lasted giving the fact that it is positioned at the bottom of the engine. And its always full of mud.

Just the usual thing that happens when you buy any second hand vehicle, could be starter motor, alternator, wheel bearing, exhaust, turbo , tyres, if you don't replace something in the first 6 months your doing pretty well. Probably the alternator was at the end of its tether and maybe the wet was just enough to push it over the edge. The ideal thing would be to spend 150k- 200k on a new one with everything you want on it . But who would go into debt to do that, they have more money than cents, then loose 50 k on it as soon as you drive it out the dealership driveway.

Mug around that area and Toolangi is the worst. It don't take much! Soon as you said "all lights are on... every light on dash is on" I knew Toolangi-area mud had claimed another victim

If you don’t have any under body protection underneath like you said if that includes the lack of a sump guard then water would of copped the full force of the muddy water when you drove in

I’ve had my 80 like 8 months, but heaps of big holes, got stuck in real thick mud and my alternator is fine. So you just got unlucky I’d say

Other way around. You have been lucky. It only takes a small splash to take out a 80 series alternator.

Old mate wasn't in 4wd when he did the hill climb or did I miss the front wheels spinning? Also being diesel it'd still run with no voltage?
