    Quick note: those aren't skunk stripes made to put truss rods into, they're just pieces of Walnut for added rigidity (and I would assume to lower the cost of production, as getting a wide 8 string neck in a single maple piece would be pretty difficult)

  • @Schwig

    @Schwig

    It's almost entirely structural. The advantage of multi-piece, laminate necks like this is that the grain of each piece can be placed in opposite directions in an effort to prevent twisting. A lot of companies do this on their regular 6-strings so the fact that it helps make the neck blanks wider is almost certainly a happy side effect they are all too eager to take advantage of financially.

    @@Schwig Ibanez themselves is one of the companies that also do this in their six-string guitars. Older RG necks were built with scarf joints like Les Pauls, and in my area they were just as likely to have a broken headstock. With a multipart neck, allegedly the glue joints are even stronger than the grain, which helps with rigidity, they have extra room for a volute so they look like there's more work on them, the wood pieces are smaller so they're cheaper... they have a lot of pros on them. Cons, not so much. Maybe that pre-building the neck blank is extra work?

    Walnut doesn’t add rigidity (although it does help to prevent twisting, as noted by other comments). Maple has a higher modulus of elasticity than walnut.

    Wide Maple isn’t the issue. Laminated necks are stiffer. Full stop. It would be foolish to build a one piece maple neck.

    It generally costs more to do a laminate neck because its a significant additional step, at least until they can teach a robot to glue and clamp stuff. The cheapest neck is usually 2 pieces, one for the neck itself and then a scarf joint attaching the headstock. This is an actual structural choice to help make a better guitar. Its super easy to get maple in widths more than 2.5"! Maple trees are huge.

    Sorry for being a gear nerd, but the wood on the maple neck is walnut and helps with stability, the fretboard is so light and rosewood looking because it is macassar ebony which typically has a lot more wood grain than regular ebony and the frets are as far as i know not stainless steel but probably just really nicely polished. :^)

    Those stripes on the neck aren't skunk stripes, they're the walnut layers of the 5 piece neck. If they were skunk stripes, they would not extend all the way to the end of the headstock, but stop somewhere before the nut. Considering it has a single spoke wheel, I don't think the neck has 2 truss rods either, which is surprising because 8 strings.

    5:40 ish you actually need to do one string to two string size pickups longer for multi scale in order to compensate for the slanted pickups. Them using a 9 string pickup on this 8 was actually to make sure all strings are covered, otherwise you’d actually have very little / no coverage over your strings with a typical 8, Fishman will actually tell you on their site to order a size up for fanned fret guitars.

    8-string guitars are kind of like 6-string basses in my view, but also kind of opposite. Bassists get 6-strings to play jazz fusion widdly-woo's in guitar territory while eschewing the low notes and guitarists get 8 to ooga booga chug in bass territory while ignoring the high strings. There are probably like 12 people who effectively use the entire range of these instruments and many more people who should just get baritone guitar or bass VI and do their backs a favor.

Today I actually heard one being used as an actual extended range guitar rather than a glorified baritone. It's still a bit much for me, but hearing that solo was a pleasant surprise. I've already read messages talking about the neck blah blah rigidity, but it's possibly also a styling choice. Whatever they did regarding truss rod is impressive, whether one or two. why would someone who owns more than 3 or 4 guitars want a case or gig bag for *every* guitar they own? Is there ever a scenario where you need to take them all on the road at the same time? Do you people want to have to dedicate an entire garage or whatever for their stack of guitar cases? I dont get it tbh... like if youre someone who is buying a $1200+ guitar, don't you probably already have a gig bag? Tbh I kind of feel like the main purpose of a guitar case that comes with a nice guitar is just to protect it on the ride home from the guitar shop - and even then you could have just brought one there with you... and even then when I'm getting a guitar I want ever cent of what I pay to be for the intrument itself, theres not actually such a thing as a "free gig" bag - its really just buying a guitar and a gig bag at the same time. And I know that last statement is real *real* obvious, but it really seems like people forget it with the way they act about this. ... like lets just say you want to get a guitar and a nice case given some budget, wouldn't it be nicer to seperate how much of your budget you want to give to each and then find the best options at those 2 budgets?... -- is the idea that a nice guitar should come with a case just yet another bit of guitar-player tradition that we guitarists tend to get so nigh-religious about? Am I an idiot who doesnt see something obvious? Genuinely curios for thoughts on this? and like, if you're in a touring band and you actually need to bring all 12 of your guitars on the road with you then of course i get why youd need a case for every guitar to go in, but even in that scenario I'd think itd make way more sense to get those huge crate sized guitar cases that hold like 3 or 4 in one. ... idk. what dont i get?
