I Think This Is Peak High Speed Platforming...
Ойындар
Game is called Spark The Electric Jester 3 and it's available on Steam. No I'm not throwing shade at Sonic Frontiers or any other Sonic game for that matter, I think Sonic Frontiers is a good game, but for completely different reasons than Spark The Electric Jester 3 (heck, I am one of the few that actually likes the cyberspace levels in Frontiers apparently).
But it is absolutely criminal the game is barely talked about... at all, especially since it got just recently free DLC, not 2 months after the game released and that DLC is Spark 2 levels ported into Spark 3 and I think these levels, especially the final ones, are peak high speed platforming, that manage to capture some of the best highs I would've found throughout pretty much any Sonic game, 2D and especially 3D.
It's frustrating to resort attaching Spark's name to Sonic The Hedgehog just so I can make people aware, but the reality of the fact is, that's how the algorithm works on KZread or even Twitter. Sonic is a recognizable brand, it will sell no matter what. But cool indie games, like Spark, Freedom Planet or Project Rascal... they don't get that luxury. Even if their gameplay is amazingly polished and fun, I can guarantee you, a good chunk of people will dismiss it as "Sonic knockoffs" (I'll also add AdventNEON here, but that game manages to separate itself a bit more despite the Sonic-like iconography).
I'll end with this... Spark The Electric Jester isn't a replacement for Sonic The Hedgehog and I hate people weaponizing indie games just to stick it to Sonic Team. But I also believe Spark, especially Spark TEJ 3, deservers more recognition.
You can buy Spark The Electric Jester 3 from here:

I already knew about Freedom Planet, which is also damn good with Sonic-tier osts, but I think the name of that series is what causes it to be so niche. @@NecroGarfunk You can't condemn Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for being clunky as early 3D Platformers. They made this formula and for the most part they did an excellent job with what was available. It doesn't help that more likely than not you are playing an inherently inferior version of those games. The Dreamcast versions handled a lot better with full use of the analog joystick.
@NecroGarfunk
24 күн бұрын
@@jermseventy8341 You're right, I can't condemn them for that, because they're not as clunky as other 3D platformers. They're worse. There were much better 3D platformers by the turn of the century. The problem is frequently just as much in the game's level design as it is the "clunkiness", often moreso. You're thrown into situations that aren't conducive to speed whatsoever, and the moments that are don't have nearly the degree of tuning or depth as this game clearly does, often being as simple as holding forward. The point is, the "fast" moments in Sonic don't even hold a candle to this, and it's not just because "it was the best they could work with". Horseshit. Their vision was lacking. They were trying to do something somewhat different with a popular genre, and while they did a good enough job that the games hold together, there's very little that's impressive about them from a mechanical standpoint. They did not explore the space of their own idea anywhere near well enough. And please, save face and just don't go there. I've played them both on DC, GCN, PC, and I won't even touch SA:DX without the Dreamcast conversion mod. You don't have a clue what you're talking about.

This game is taking everything that _worked_ from 3D Sonic games while getting rid of all the extra gimmicks and baffling design choices that detracted from what was actually _fun_ about Sonic-going FAST. It's _exactly_ what fans have wanted from a 3D Sonic since forever, and it's ridiculous that literally every official title has found one way or another to sabotage the simple joy of high-speed platforming. Honestly I can’t blame people if they compare this to Sonic. The sad reality is this is the kind of gameplay we’ve wanted from that series and honestly you can’t blame a community when the one thing their game’s mascot is advertised as fails to be what it was hyped up as. I’m just saying it how it is Plus, this is a little side rant but I find it weird how people think sonic team can’t make gameplay like this (as in pinball physics / momentum based gameplay), even though in Frontiers it’s clearly present albeit only on railgrinding and launching off of certain terrain that aren’t magnetised. Why they aren’t basing a whole game around that we don’t know for sure. Iizuka clearly is interested in it but something is holding him back from doing so, probably sega themselves telling them to not do it for their own weird reasons and their mandates. Since frontiers is doing well from a sales and general public perspective I hope they actually include this type of gameplay, I’d love to see it in sonic again because I’ve been itching for it, and tbh spark doesn’t scratch that itch for me despite me liking the game

This actually seems pretty slow compared to some of the earlier Sonic 3D platformers. Definitely far from a peak especially in terms of the repetitiveness in concept displayed here. How many times are we doing to see the same linear platform splits after a jump or very slight curvature change on a platform to supposedly keep me on my toes? Collectibles also seem uselessly scattered and inconsistent. Do NOT get me started on the music. This is a study in horror.

I'm glad that you didn't heavily criticized Sonic by using Spark as a resource for doing it, because there are so many people around the Internet saying that this is the only good Sonic game or any hate take you could imagine, people should enjoy games without any aggressiveness. @@vividcolorandrichaudio6134 While I wasn’t speaking specifically in my original comment, I understand that it looked like I was referring to Sonic games themselves being the cashgrabs. I see you crusading for Sonic on a lot of these other comments, so I’m sorry if I ruffled your feathers. Lol While I think previous Sonic games have been very poorly made (Frontiers excluded) I don’t necessarily think they lack soul. Having worked in the creative industry for a few years now, generally speaking, I’ve seen a lot of passionate makers, writers, etc. consistently shut down because money is the end all be all, and getting it as quickly and effortlessly as possible is what’s prioritized. I.E. I used to work for some bigwig KZreadrs where I had a hand in the creative processes. A ton of really fun video concepts we came up with, and had the resources to feasibly pull off, were either half-assed or squashed entirely in favor of something easier because “as long as it has a good thumbnail, the kids (their main audience consisted of teens and tweens by the time I was brought on) will click on it anyway”. This was almost verbatim. Gaming as an industry is no exception. But as technology advances, and fully released games need more time in the oven to actually be *playable* at this point, let alone be good - that corporate greed is more evident in Triple A games now, more than ever. Yearly “re-skins” of games like Call of Duty, FIFA, etc. Pokémon games with solid ideas, that look like they’re melting because “Pokémon sells, regardless”. Remakes of *modern* games like The Last of Us Part 1, because it’s so much easier to build off of something that’s already made, than to start fresh. Those are the cashgrabs. I know Indie games are often on a different playing field with smaller budgets and manpower, but also smaller scopes as well. Nonetheless, I’m certain all of these indie game creators would love to have their ideas appreciated and backed and funded at a big gaming brand - but that would mean risk. And why risk money on something creative, when you can just change some code parameters and call it NBA 2k24 or whatever. Anyway, there’s my thesis. Feel free to trash on it, since this is a stupid KZread thread LMAO
Thanks for making this video, I bought it due to it, and finished it in one sit. Played it for 6 hours straight, and it is unbelievably good.

I agree with your sentiment in the description SO MUCH! It really sucks these games became weapons against Sonic games because I feel like that really just hurt them overall. These games separate themselves from Sonic and carve their own path to being nice, fun, experiences but the comparisons and the weaponizing only takes away from what should be their spotlight. Hopefully Spark will get way more looks in the future as Lake continues to create cool, fun, games. And maybe it can get the looks it deserves.

@@bshays21 What's wrong with comparing the two? This is obviously a Sonic clone, but seems to be _far_ superior so any 3D Sonic games I'm aware of. It's natural to compare the two if the 'real' product is inferior to something inspired by it that came later. Not only that, but the Sonic franchise has a massive following - it's unrealistic to expect not to see people disappointed with it's current direction voice their opinion and compare the two when this game proves their beloved IP could be improved so easily. PS: I'm not a huge Sonic fan, but I did play Sonic and Knuckles 3 back in the day. I kinda disagree with this take. I think both games are similar enough to be compared and understand why they'd use this game to criticize Sonic Frontiers. Competition is sometimes a way for one to perform at their best and I don't think it's bad especially for a AAA game like Sonic, who has the funds and what it takes to make the best 3D platforming game. If fans are open about how one does things better than the other, SEGA can see this as a wake up call to do better in their subsequent releases. That said, I understand why comparing isn't sometimes the best thing to do. Each game can be their own things and sometimes competition also creates a toxic environment, but I don't think people are comparing the two just to be toxic, this comment section shows that the majority of people love both franchises and just want to see them do their best.

This video is what encouraged me to get spark 3. Be of the things I think it nails as a speed platform we is that tbh you don’t even need to be playing at this level to have fun. I love sonic games but I’m good at them. I learned them and I know how to effectively use its systems for traversal. I had to learn this game However the game was still loads of fun even when I wasn’t going fast. Even just going at a low speed and looking around the level is fun. I remember my first time replaying the first stage and finding a whole village with npcs just off to the side of the stage and that route is more battle oriented on your way to the finish line. It was a completely different experience from my first run through of the level. I loved sonic frontiers but I gotta say this game is pretty superior in terms of fun game play. However I love sonic and his world so I was always gonna like a sonic game
A buddy of mine showcased all three Spark games to me a lil bit ago. It really is a crime how underappreciated this series is. The dev really knows how to nail these wicked level designs and a terrifying sense of MASSIVE scale and distance with some of the endgame levels

I like Spark 3 a lot but there isn't a "correct way" to design a 3D Sonic game. Case in point, I love Sonic Unleashed and Generations, really enjoy Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and I especially love SRB2, a Sonic fangame that plays unlike anything else.
An indie game like this is proof that Sonic Team isn't being held back by budget They're held back by a lack of talent
The best advertisement for a game is the gameplay. Thank you for this.
The absolute legendary move of "What if you could play the other one though," CANNOT be understated. I'm currently going on the f***ing JOURNEY of 100%ing the new levels and it's such a trip.
Even tho I prefer speed like we had in 2000s Sonic games, if Sonic has to be uber fast, this is what I would be looking for. Freedom of movement, building and maintaining speed by myself and not given by pressing boost button down, using said speed to skip sections, get to shortcuts or some hidden goodies. I was not keen on boost and I'm tired of it (I changed Frontiers from boost game to semi-Adventure with mods, only cyber space was boost)
CONGRATS ON 1.4 MILL!!!!!
I saw 1 video on this game, but this one makes the game look soooo amazing. Might have to change my ways and play it even though it's only on PC. I appreciate you advertising this and also Freedom Planet 2 in your comment. I played the 1st one on PS4 and plan to play 1 and 2 on Switch when the 2nd one gets released
I swear Sparks is to 3D High-Speed Platforming what Freedom planet was to 2D High-Speed Platforming. Both are excellent variations of the Sonic formula which manage to perfectly emulate it, evolve it and distinguish themselves from it to create a unique franchise identity, while also opening up A LOT of level design possibilities due to the unique way they tweak their mechanics for speed, verticality and general mobility, all the while still managing to provide excellent horizontal and vertical level design which manages to be fairly long in the best way, incredibly replayable and even somehow rather challenging despite the characters being arguably far stronger and more versatile combat-wise and mobility-wise! Great stuff all around
Spark 3 is such an amazing game. Please keep promoting it.
Something about Apocalypse Thruster song gives me Final Dreadnaught 1 and Final Fortress and I absolutely love it
The game and level design both look great. I suppose that goes for the sound design, character design, movement, and all the other designs as well...

It still has some of Sonic's caveats, like the camera being pitched too far down when going on some winding roads, making it so the player doesn't see the rings coming and has to guess what the hell is in front of them. For the most part it fixes Sonic's camera issues, but that one is still present.
