I taught English on italki for 1 YEAR! Here's my experience so far...

Yesterday I passed my one year anniversary of starting as a community tutor on the popular language learning website italki. So in this video I decided I would share with you guys a little bit about my experience so far, and whether I would recommend it to others!

    I'd also be really interested in this, do you usually go in with a structured lesson plan or do you allow the students to lead with what they wish to learn and then adapt from there?

    Currently learning French on iTalki for about a year as a student and really enjoying it. Concernig the algorythm I would agree, it sometimes is a bit unpredictable, and especially when loading a lot of profiles, some seam to reappear at the bottom again for no particular reason. But when you reload the page, profiles seem to appear very randomly so one profile that shows up at the top might appear a few pages later next time. This applies to the desktop version, haven't used the app much as I think it needs some polishing. Overall I like this platform but again this comes from a student‘s perspective.

Can you turn down gigs like for the example you made with the kids? And lastly are tutors allowed to dress casually and even where a cap on their head if they wanted?

    Hi Shane, from another Shane! Seems we have a few things in common… I’m called Shane, I’m British, I speak Spanish and I’ve just become a community English tutor on italki :D I’ve also had some ideas floating around in my head for a few years about creating a youtube channel and podcast content and, for whatever reason, I’ve been putting it off. Maybe the tutoring will give me the kick up the arse I needed :D Just wanted to say, thanks for sharing your experiences. It’s really encouraging for those of us starting out. Especially the cons (forewarned is forearmed!) I’ve just had my first lesson request so naturally I’m a little nervous, but excited to get started. Can I ask, when you started out, were you working another job and, if so, how did you find balancing the teaching alongside it? I ask because I work full time right now so I think it might be quite challenging at times! Cheers :)

  • @ShaneGodliman

    @ShaneGodliman

    (Totally misread this at first) Yeah this is a tough one, but I think the best thing you can do is to prepare a lot of basic topics, questions, different things to give you things to keep the conversation moving, or even different content like pictures and videos if you need extra assistance getting them to understand something. I’ve found with teaching English most people have at least a tiny bit if knowledge so will be able to string a couple of basic sentences together at least. Ultimately prepare lots of resources and content would be my advice
