    FCP was the only thing that held me in Mac ecosystem. I loved it very much. To switch to resolve also took me 2 attempts with one year break. But once I did it I've never regretted it. It was hard to ditch all investment in FCP as time as money for plugins and app, but now I feel more independent. And I can even come back to Mac without suffering as DR also works on Mac.

    I love how flexible Fusion is when it comes to integration. You can save out effects as a setting, macro or both. A node based environment can be intimidating at first but it will be second nature with a little patience. Oh, smart bins are great for auto organization. Resolve is the same price as Final Cut Pro except it has way more features.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I’ve tried DVR myself with the v17 but ended up going back to what I’m familiar with, and that is FCP workflow. With DVR I’ve felt overwhelmed with all the menus on the screen (you’ve described that as cluttered and I totally agree :)). I might give it a go again once my MBPM1max arrives eventually but now I edit on iPad Pro M1 with LumaFusion (great for editing on the go) and then my old MBP to add finishing touches in FCP. All the best and see you in the next one Pascal 👍🏻

    I still like the intuitiveness of FCPX. Davinci Resolve is a lot more featured. I feel ike FCPX has stagnated a bit and could really do with some more professional features and fleshing out of certain functionality but overall is so much more streamlined and enjoyable to use. I have edited with DR, PP and Avid and the speed and versality in the way you edit in FCPX is just unmatched. Davinci Resolve is still very clunky in the editing department.

    Late to the party but now that you've been using Resolve for a minute, would you say you're faster than you were in FCP? I'm so used to harnessing the power of the magnetic timeline that I'm easily 50% faster than operating in a standard NLE and it's been the one thing holding me back from using resolve for end to end production. Sounds like the cut page might be the solution but as a former FCP power user, it would be awesome to hear your thoughts. Great video by the way!

  • @tangierclarke8499
    @tangierclarke84992 жыл бұрын

    Nice video and I like DR too. A few points though. The color camera profile features you start out mentioning are available and have been available in FCP's inspector for a very long time and can be applied to groups of clips. No adjustment layer ever needed. Typically FCP automatically applies this without you having to do anything. Unless we're talking about different things, I am surprised this was overlooked. Dynamic zoom in DR is a handy feature and tracking is definitely better in DR. I've been using DR more and more, but I do not like tracks anymore. I can't stress that enough. One issue I have with DR is editorial are features are split between the cut page (aka their attempt at an FCP-like editing experience) and edit page. I prefer having access to everything all of the time. I do wish sometime both would get features from the other, but for now it's still an FCP-Resolve-FCP workflow for me and I appreciate that they work well together and to date DR has never been as stable, but everyone's experience will be different based on a lot of factors. I teach students both apps and most run back to FCP because they feel they can focus on the creative process and more and produce content faster, but many stick with Resolve because it's free. The new depth map feature in DR is absolutely amazing too.

  • @pascalbasel

    @pascalbasel

    The camera profiles in FCP are just conversion LUTs. That’s very different from DaVinci’s Color Managed workflow (Transforms vs LUTs + color space aware grading tools…). The group feature is also better in DR as it’s not just LUT but you can do whatever you want to a group of clips.

  • @jasoncblackwood

    @jasoncblackwood

    10 ай бұрын

    @@pascalbasel I think what he and others are trying to say here is that you can still apply the LUTs in the media browser and not have to worry about color in your timeline, which makes it all faster. It’s definitely not the same thing as a color space transform, and I have noticed everything looks better in Resolve. This is the main reason I can’t go back to FCPX yet. I badly miss the magnetic timeline, however - tracks just seem to be an outdated way of editing to me.

    I have always used dodgy downloads of Final Cut Pro in the past, and the day I finally decided to be a true/loyal fan by paying for a legit copy of FCPx (directly purchased from Apple Inc), was the same day that I strangely switched to Davinci Resolve (DR) .. First it was just a curious act, but boy have I been hooked to DR ever since. Let's just say that I've not used the FCPx I purchased to date (maybe once, I did). Really hard to make this admission publicly, having being an FCPx fanboy for years. I still love Final Cut Pro of course, but DR is just something out of this world man. I can't put in words what I get from that one piece of editing suite. The main thing I absolutely missed from FCPx is the Magnetic timeline 😁

    If Premier Pro and Final Cut Pro would have a baby, that would be Davinci.. lol :) Yes, it's cluttered, but much prettier than Premier Pro in my opinion, however, not as pretty as Final Cut Pro. It's more stable than Premier, but not as stable as FCP, etc.. Back when I was on Windows, it was a no-brainer to switch from Premier to Davinci, but now I'm back on a Mac ( took a few years break to explore the market), I'm back using Final Cut Pro. For my needs is more than enough. But I do feel the FCP updates & upgrades have stagnated a bit compared to Davinci, so might consider this in the future. One this I missed from FCP, when I used Davinci, is the visual color-coded (green to red) audio waveform, the ability to see exactly where the audio might clip. So editing a simple 4k timeline with a little color adjustment will be easy-peasy in Final Cut while bringing your macbook to its limits in Davinci - and I am not talking about complex effects processing, just playing back a simple 4k timeline is buttery smooth in FC and you get all kinds of stutters and choking in Davinci.

    After using fcp from back in the v7 years, I switched for of two reasons: crashes and slow rendering. I’m not going to poop on fcp. It’s just different. As for motionvfx, you have to repurchase the plugins. It’s not just a matter of reinstalling ftom fcp. This is sad since I have over 10$k in plugins but update 10.6.7 gave me zero choice. Complete freeze up. 🌞

    I switched a couple years ago and still really miss the magnetic timeline. I still cringe when I see KZreadrs that edit in fcpx and don't even use the magnetic timeline correctly. I also miss the keywording method in fcpx. You can get a similar workflow in Resolve but have metadata based tagging in fcpx is still superior. But it's getting better and the smart bins, and keywording in Resolve is still miles ahead of Premiere Pro, so I really loved the switch. The biggest reason I switched was for the finishing tools in general. The editing was a little slower, but the finishing is soo much faster, I can mix and colour without roundtripping it was a game changer. And now the cloud project editing is here, it's amazing.

    I use Apple for some practical reasons, but saying it has "simple design" suggests you've never seen the main alternatives. Apple products only seem simple when compared to crappy Microsoft products, which isn't the market leader anymore. If you compare against most mainstream Linux distros like Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse Tumbleweed or Deepin I think you'll find that MacOS is obtuse, sloppy and overly complicated. It only seems polished when Windows is considered the alternative. In the business world we consider this a "false comparison" - where the worst option is presented as the only alternative to make a mediocre option appear great by hiding the better options out there. That said, MacOS and Apple are awesome and their shiny star now (but only recently) is their hardware. For twenty years their hardware has been pathetic. But since the move to M1 / ARM they've leapfrogged the market and while MacOS is good, but not great, the hardware is unbeatable today when you need the power. I use Apple M1 Mac with Final Cut Pro X for video editing, but switch to my Ubuntu desktop next to it for "real work" because it is so much easier to use and more polished. It will run Davinci too, if you want it to ;) If I wasn't using Final Cut Pro X, it would be a lot harder to justify the extra effort and bugginess of the Mac even though it is technically faster.

    I actually used Ubuntu Linux before Mac because Windows sucks 😂 But I endee up liking MacOS more. I think what makes it strong are all the gestures and shortcuts. I can’t imagine how I could use my computer faster. But I‘m sure Linux has also evolved since then. It’s great that DaVinci is also available on Linux. 8 years ago that could have prevented me from switching to Mac. Now it’s too late 😉

    @@pascalbasel 8 years ago Ubuntu was still pretty bad. It used to be the hard to use Linux choice. Now it’s really good. Back then it was Fedora and Suse keeping things simple. It’s sucks because Ubuntu got all the attention and made Linux so hard and drove so many people away for no reason. Now it’s great and totally on par with the other leaders. So I use it now and it’s fantastic. But year eight years ago it would have been pretty rough :(
