In my film shooting days, I used Leica M cameras, culminating with the M6. The strength for the street is that the lenses are clearly marked with accurate and comprehensive DOF scales to allow easy zone focusing. A zone focused lens can beat AF because it is already "there" and you don't have to worry about getting focus points over the subject. I am now retired, and couldn't justify the cost of a Q at this point. I have instead went with Fujifilm.

I used a M4 with 50mm 1.2 and 35mm 1.4 in the 1970s. I was always a fan of Leitz/Leica. But this time a gone at least 20 years. Today there are no reasons to by a Leica. The relevant technology comes from Panasonic. And if it says Panasonic instead of Leica, it costs much less and is often even better.

@@avronaut this is really not true for Leica's M series. there is a clear distinction between the cheaper "leica" models - digilux, v-lux, etc - and their core lineup of M models which do not have a Panasonic equivalent.

  • @avronaut

    @avronaut

@@spaceman-pe5je I know the difference of course. I would prefer an original Panasonic model to the Leica imprint. And I prefer the ones with the Leica imprint to the M models. They're just expensive cases with a sensor from Asia. It's sensor can come from Sony or Canon, which would be preferable. But it may also come from a lesser-known Chinese manufacturer. Sensor, software and lens make the picture and not an exorbitantly expensive housing. At best, the lenses of the M series can still keep up with the current level of the Japanese. But without a sophisticated Autofocus it's pretty pointless.

I invested in a Q2 6 months ago…. It is simply great fun to shoot with. Zone focusing for street works best as the autofocus is a tad slow…Image quality is stunning. I do have a full set of Nikon gear, which I use for planned days out , wildlife, sports etc etc. But just to grab and go with a Q2 is really rather liberating and having it around to capture everyday events is also a plus… I certainly don’t regret the investment.

If you try the Q2 Monochrom be sure to pick up a B+W Red filter and check out how the images just pop. A Yellow one is nice to have as well for portraits or more subtle contrast

I bought my Leica Q2 this past February…call it a birthday present to myself. Prior to it, I had been shooting Sony Alpha bodies (A77 and A99 II) and lenses. I decided to sell all of Sony gear right before and go all-in with the Q2 for many of the reasons you stated: simpler, more free shooting experience, having a camera that travels so well and has enough resolution and detail that you can adjust to your heart’s content in post-processing. Having never shot with a Leica prior, I can honestly say that the usual attributes are all true: fantastic lens, very intuitive ergonomics and workflow, film-like image quality and build quality that justifies the price. I’ve never enjoyed using a camera as much as I do this one, nor have I thought less about shooting while I was…shooting; with the Q2, I just shot away and feel very much part of the moment. The only issue for me is that I can’t see myself going back to any manufacturer’s gear. It simply won’t be as well made, won’t be as lovely to use, won’t have that Leica-look to the images…you get what I mean. Critics like to point out that Leica owners are very cult-like in their allegiance to the brand…there are good reasons why. Enjoy the camera!

I acquired the Q2 Monochrom last month and I love it so far! It's a different experience but I love the way I need to think more and take my time to shoot! It works for me. I still love the Fujis (x-pro3 and X-T4) a lot as well. Perfect combo if you ask me. The monochrome sensor is just mind-blowing. Adding color filter adds the Ansel Adams experience to it. For street and travel it's amazing. The Sony is less and less used in my rig, except for 8k videos.

I purchased my Q2 in 2017 based on my Leica M6 experience, back in the day. Yes, it's expensive however it is all that you said it is but I'll also remind you that it is "sealed" against moisture, a pretty big deal for me. The fixed lens prevents me from lusting for more lenses and forces me to concentrate on composition. I do use the crop for 50/70mm from time to time but mostly stick to 28mm and then crop in post if needed. I've shot in some pretty hard rain with no problems for street and landscape. I"m very happy with my Q2 despite my wife having a nuclear core melt down when she saw the cost but once she saw the B&W prints I made, even she could see the difference from my Nikon Z6II images. Thanks for your videos from Paris, they help me decide where to shoot.

Great user experiences sharing on the Q2. I have it before. Very handy but as most ppl here mentioned its auto focus is slow. Then I use manual focusing most of the time like a M. It has 47M pixels sensor like my SL2 but the color is not as good or prefer as Ms (not much Leica look as I use to hav on my Ms). Yes the pixels are much more than M10 so I kept it until I moved to M10R (still my most preferable Leica camera so far). Recently I’m consider a M monochrome for street photography but I would say a Q2 Mono would be a better choice for street as I use 28mm most the time for street photography and the Mono sensor on Q2 moon and M10 mono are the same. And it will give you more flexibility on shooting such as macro or auto focus then a M and lower total cost.

Teh dynamic range pay in full when editing. I have been surprised to get more detail on all spectrum of the photos. And even the colors. I can not tell what is it, but there is something. They seems a bit deeper, the black have something that I can not get on my Canon. Im short, I LOVE that camera. BTW, I succeeded to secure a reporter edition. That adds a bit of 'specialness" :-)

I believe it's mostly in the sweet Leica lens and then possibly a red leaning colour balance in the camera's processing... I do admit it's very nice jpegs out of the camera but sometimes a bit exaggerated, but I often steal Leica colour profiles for my raw photos so there is something special about Leica colour rendering.

Good review, thanks. I've used Nikon since the 80's for family, travel and landscape. And still use Nikon, but I always wanted to experience Leica and I'm able to now. I use the M rangefinder system and 2 prime lenses and they are amazing (used is the way to go). I decided to try the Q2 for more every day use and love it. Leica's are not for everyone, but for me, I wanted to get something classic with only the options I really need/use. Do they make me a better photographer? Who knows. I do know I enjoy the experience more and that's what matters to me. A few notes: The Q2 fully weather sealed, and coming from the rangefinder, having AF is a joy at times. AF has been improved with the most recent 4.0 firmware and so are the Jpeg images out of camera. I shoot raw on the others but I'm liking that I can export the jpegs quickly to the Leica Fotos app on my phone and send to family & friends in a matter of minutes. I'm trying the thumb grip which so far is giving me more confidence in holding it and doesn't detract from the beautiful lines on the front of the camera. (Never liked add-on hand grips).

Try it. Seriously. I own both the A7R4 and the Q2. And the SL2. And the M10. The Q2 is not the most suitable tool for every task, but it’s pretty addictive to use… Especially as an every day/ carry around camera. For all of those times when you don’t want to take a camera bag along. I don’t really use the crop modes, so I’m shooting more wide-angle than usual. The lens is just excellent and so are the raw files. And yes, it’s very very expensive, but obviously worth it for a lot of people. The X100V or GRIII will probably offer you a lot of what makes the Q2 attractive, for a much more sensible price. But it won’t get you quite as far as this gem of a camera. I would recommend the lims half case for the extra grip and some sort of protection for the camera. it has openings in the bottom where you dont have to remove to deal with the battery and card slot. but the big seller for me was the integrated arca swiss mount on the case. and you can go more than 30 seconds slow shutter without a remote. now how cool is that!?

The microcontrast in the lenses and colours out of the sensor is amazing! User experience is wonderful especially the Leica M lineup! Leica may not be as advanced or fast as Sony or Canon but the Leicas make me go out every day out without leaving them home. Inspired to shoot endlessly. I love my Leicas, especially the glass! In the end it is how you use your tools, and Leica for me lets me use them very very often and I still enjoy using them. The Sony system got me numb and unmotivated to shoot. Had every high end lens and body but I wasn't going out to shoot and hated post production.

I now have a A7c as this private camera and I love it- I can make so much better pictures with the kids and in holidays - sometimes I use the 28mm, or the 35 1.8 or the 50 1.8 - so I have a light combo which is not as cool as a Leica but at the end of the day - to have better and more pictures are even cooler.

And Leica is above Fuji and Canon.

Ok. I leave a comment here for the first time: I own a Leica Q2 and a Leica SL 2 and some Olympus cameras. In September last year I travelled to Rome for a week to celebrate the wedding day of my parents (with my parents) who had their marriage in Rome looooong time ago. Which gear?? I took with me the Leica Q2 and the cute Olympus Omd Em10 II with the 45mm 1.8. I created a photobook 30x30 centimeters with the pictures from Rome. Beside the different focal length: Did anyone (me included) notice a difference between the pictures taken with the Leica and the Olympus? No!!!

Leica has great cameras. I considered getting one last year. But then I discovered the Sony A7RIV which I now have, together with 12-24, 24-104 and 70-200mm lenses. Planning to get the 90mm Macro too by the way. The weight is much higher, but stability is great and I am very happy with the images. I have been lookinb at the Leica images. Am I right that this camera produces higher contrast images? It looks like it has a built in polarizer filter to make the colors pop. It looks like a perfect travel camera and I really like how they built these cameras. Great attention to details and less buttons. Wondering how their menus are.

Best reason to buy this is the lens. This package is cheaper than it’s equivalent lens on its own. I get that you can get more or less the same with other cameras, but Leica, as a package, is unmatched. The optical quality of that 28mm 1.7 has nothing truly comparable aside from Voigtlander and the user experience and build quality of these cameras is just unique for its size. I have only borrowed one and I shoot GFX full time. I would never replace anything with this camera because it’s absolutely a niche pick that only fills its own box. I’ve owned lots of comparable camera from the GR 2, 3, Song RX 100 VII and X100 F and V. I would choose this over all of them if they were in the same price range, but for now I’ve stuck with the GR3 and I hope to buy a Leica down the line. I really do think you have to use it to understand and the Sony-focused community here just isn’t the market. I love my GFX, switched entirely from Sony for it, but the only thing I miss is the speed… which is pretty much the antithesis of Leica

I use vintage glass on the A7c for a similar experience. Aperture on the lens, shutter on the dial, iso custom button directly under the thumb. Zone focusing works like a charm and the lenses contribute a ton of character to the results. Often they perform with perfect clarity at f5.6 to f8, but inject a lot of mood and nuance wide open. I actually get annoyed when using autofocus lenses because it's so much slower than zone focus. Glad you found a setup that inspires you, though! I own both the Fuji x100v and the Q2. I'm not rich; I prefer to spend my money on cameras and tech-some people buy expensive handbags/sneakers or a fancy night out for dinner. I saved my money on what I liked. These are both VERY different cameras that create a different vibe when you use them. They each give VERY different looks. I always feel it is a very unfair comparison. I always feel like people on KZread want to make the comparison because it's good clickbait. I tend to use the Q2 more because it takes little effort to render great images. The interface is much more streamlined than Fuji. The Fuji is the way to go if you want more of a film look. They are both excellent cameras. They are not an APPLES to apple comparison. The Q2 allows me to be more in the moment. With my Fuji, I'm constantly distracted by the different filters. Please don't get me wrong; the filters are excellent, but they tend to take me out of the moment, because I'm always wondering what a scene would look like with the different settings.

I have the Fujifilm X100V and do not suffer from "filter" distraction. Did you mean film simulations? As for the difference between the Q2 and Fujifilm, I must have such an inattentive/unsophisticated brain to notice any huge difference between the same images taken from each camera as I am able to discern the "subtle floral notes" between a moderately priced one and an expensive one. My bottom line is that if you love taking pictures with your Leica, Sony, Fujifilm, Canon, etc. and you like the results...THAT is the best camera for you, my friend. I love the diversity of camera brands so that we can all make a choice based on our wallets and what we like to use.

I have the Q2 Black and white because while I love color -- I much prefer BW images. I'm also a Sony fanboy. I bought the Q2 for freedom and street while traveling in 3rd world countries - it's a technical point and shoot with 42mp. I am not super happy with a 28mm lens but with 42mp you can easily crop -- no prob and still get good distance but it is somewhat limiting in depth of field. You need the grip and thumb attachment -- after that, it feels better than my Sony's A7xx - Q2 honestly feels better -- so no grips -- dont bother - with grips and you are in heaven. As for auto focus -- no problem -- dont take it to a sporting event and your more than fine -- shoot people and things and all the noise about focus is nonsense. With all that said, its $6k for a black and white camera which can be closely matched by Lightroom conversion or Silver Efex -- still, I like grains and dark darks and white whites and the Leica is no BS, its better marginally. Great toy to have and feel like your liberated from the layers of menus in a Sony.
