I would like to share an experience with you Kave 3 years ago I was deep into discus just loved keeping them and had a 100-gallon with 10 discus. Then I added a BABY GREEN AROWANA to the tank. Things were looking beautiful and the tank was completely stable for about a year. Then out of the blue Arowana started showing aggression I thought it was just a phase for him, then after 3 months, Discus used to come out only to feed and go back to hiding. This leads me to two options to give away discus or Arowana, Give my Arowana away to some store and replace it with some American cichlid, which is also not working good, and finally gave away my old discus long story short discus in a community of large fish doesn't go along for a long time, just keep an extra tank ready to move discus in.

Thank you for sharing that! I appreciate hearing the experiences of others! I am fully aware that it may not work with the arowana but I've also heard of success stories as well, keeping Arowana with Discus. I've got my fingers crossed hoping I can also have success but I'll be ready to move fish around if I have to. Thanks again for the heads up!

That’s a great transition and very excited to see you demonstrate some feedback and information about Discus fish and what are the best things we need to provide the most appropriate environment for them, kudos man. But I’m very stressed and worried about adding the Discus with the Arwana and Severium, I would see some Angels and one more type of schooling fish like Cardinals tetra with them since they more like quit atmosphere not like the others. And good luck

Thank you bro! The severums were a bit aggressive at first but they've since calmed down and leave them alone. The Discus are now swimming freely throughout the whole tank and eating well. The Arowana ignores them completely, no issues at all there 😁 Will def have more discus content in the near future now

I know that you have you keep your ph around 8, discus prefere lower below 7, and another think is put some live plants, I'll recommend amazon sword they are very easy to care of. My discus love to swim through them and even sleep in them. That plant is heavily a root feeder, lots of root taps. Love your discus 🥰🥰🥰 they are gorgeous 😍 ❤.... I just caught up on your videos; your getting discus put me over the top to subscribe! I've watched your content on canister filters before, and found them very informative. But I always thought you were African Cichlids only; I totally missed your addition of South American Cichlids! I recently got discus for the first time myself, for a 90 gallon aquarium, so I want to see how your tank works out. I went with the safer combination of discus and tetras, but I love the combination you have going with discus, severum, geo's and even the arowana! Good luck with it all, and ignore the "experts" dissing on you. If you make it work, it works!

Im not experienced in the requirements of Koi, but keeping Discus in that high of a PH may be difficult. They dont necessarily need to be in very acidic water like the wild, they have been bred to adjust to a higher PH but 8.4 may be too high....I agree with @bamastead, If you're going to try, try with tank raised and not wild discus...good luck though.

Yes the tank is overstocked but they seem to like it better that way. Im curious. Should I still use Cichlid Lake Salt and if so how much? The bottle has a recommended GH for each lake and you dose based on your tank waters hardness.

Hey kev I have been feeding my piranha frozen fish but I decided to give him some feeders and I feel like one of the might of been carrying a disease. About a week after eating the fish he starts to act weird. Not eating, swim patterns changed, pale, and floating parallel. And this morning he was upside down he’ll swim around but he’ll end up upside down again or at the bottom of the tank. What should I do?

I used about 2 full bags, but how much you use depends on your tank's bio-load and your source water. How long it lasts also depends on the same. You have to continue testing to dial in your tank. Then you'll always know when its time to replace it.

Mr Kev…Mr Kev!!! lol you finally made it to my man Rich at Fish Hut!!! Great store, great owners, and the best employees in any fish store in NJ 💯 Ok man, I told you a long time ago you are gonna get bit by the SA bug man…South American Fish are just beautiful, I really enjoy keeping my Severums. Oscars while beauties are just not a good mix with Severums in any tank below 200 gallons, it can work and I’ve seen it work but it takes a huge tank and a very patient fish keeper as you need to be watching that tank 24/7 and it’s just a hard tank to manage, can be done tho. As for the discus….Beautiful Fish my bro! However and I’m being honest my man…pay very close attention to the PH, I’ve been keeping my Uaru Pandas in a PH of 6.5 and they are doing great. I have Low PH here where I live so it’s not so hard for me to keep sensitive fish that need a lower PH. Add some drift wood, I’d deff look into some realistic looking plants like elite cichlids used to carry, and just keep an eye on the sevs with them. All fish are not the same, and yours may do fine with the discus, and they may not…Time will tell. As I’ve said on my gram many times, my sevs aren’t so nice, but they seem to get along with my geos and just chase amongst each other. Either way good luck and I’m glad you finally made it to the Hut! They really are awesome people👌🏼

Thanks bro, glad you enjoyed the video! My severums are doing good so far, a bit too interested at first but now totally ignore the Discus. And the Discus are getting comfortable now, swimming through every inch of the tank and eating well. I've researched a ton before getting these guys and while yes they are supposed to be kept in a low PH many agree that these tank-raised Discus can and have adjusted to a higher PH close to neutral. My tap is like 7.3 7.5 around there and so far my guys are doing well in there. I've just increased the water changes to twice a week to keep nitrates as low as possible, especially in the beginning. The guys at fish hut were super helpful and knowledgeable, made me feel comfortable with the Discus! Next time you see Rich tell'm I said whats up!! 😊💪

@@KaveManAquatics So glad to hear they are all doing well together🙏🏻 And absolutely man, tank bred fish are always so much more resilient against the stuff that bother wild fish. I just dealt with it for the Uaru Pandas, they need very similar conditions to what wild discus thrive in, and bro let me tell you…it’s been a wild few weeks to say the least! Things are finally stable (for now) and hopefully me having such low PH out of the tap will pay off. I actually started doing 2 water changes a week for both my tanks and everyone seems to be thriving. My Severums are growing like weeds and same for the Geos…If I can give you one tip that has really paid off for me it’s been really upping the veggie based food👌🏼 I started giving my fish the veggie granuals from Sera and brooooo….they absolutely love them!!! Also been using the veggie flakes from them as well and have been limiting protein to only a day or 2 during the week and the change in color and activity is really noticeable💯 Heading to the Hut this weekend and I will definitely tell Rich and the crew you send your regards💪🏼😎
