If you're having issues with lack of drinks, the dwarves are likely cooking/eating all their drink-making foods. You can disable brewable foods in the kitchen section of the labor menu, I think.

  • @KokoplaysMB

@@okeoi That was my latest plan with fortress #10. I dont feel safe until my food and drink are up past 500 ea. How important is a kitchen cooked meal? My dwarves started to get upset about the uncooked food by year 5 or so...i think.

@@snickle1980 As soon as you have some food stored, start making lavish meals. It's a big mood booster and barrels filled with masterpiece meals can be valued up to nearly 10k in trade. I trade cut gems for the first couple of years then just start selling meals and buying out entire trade caravans.

One of my forts failed, interestingly. I chose a magma pipe location, but at least then, those were surrounded by imps. My plan, breed a huge army of dogs and lead them to take control of the magma. I made so many of them the game started to slow down a bit, which I considered a trigger to start the assault. Dogs go in following their master, hundreds of them. Imp sees the dogs, and breathes fire. The dogs catch fire and panic. The on-fire panicking dogs cause other dogs to ignite leading to a chain reaction. The heats reaches a level where the fat in the dogs melts and leaks out, causing pools of burning dog fat everywhere in my fort. Nobody makes it out alive. I guess I should have shaved the dogs beforehand, were that possible.

just as a warning about the moat... the thing thats happening is the dwarfs ai tells them to "dodge" in combat to an adjecent tile which can be a perfectly safe tile of drawbridge... or moat of lava, or 20 layer drop, so yeah, not super safe... also with werebeasts i don't think the chance of infection is 100% so it's a good idea to have a few "quarantine" areas with drawbrides as a doors and see if they turn or not if they've been attacked

Which setting creates the best gameplay? 5 years? 50? 100? 250? At some point, I understand that the map will become crowded with evil, and lag... _and evil lag._ But if i start in year five...nothing really happens. Dwarf fortress is filled with hard choices. =(

  • @tubebrocoli

I like setting it to 100, or letting the story run to 150-ish. Too much more and the necromancers kinda run over everyone. History length doesn't really affect lag, it does affect save time considerably, though.

I pick a small world, low civs, and low sites, and five years in I still get plenty of action. But I also play with added ratflok, gnoll, and beastman civs. If I play any longer into the game, most of the choice spots are taken or inhospitable due to evil faction proximity. 100 years in, half of the settlements are one day away from 5-6 massive evil sites, at a minimum. If I settle on the doorstep of my parent civ, I drown in immigrants rapidly. With my settings, forts often last a decade plus and I'm not in a rush because I naturally level up on par with the other civs and I don't get swamped or overwhelmed. My last fort, which I retired because I didn't make the luxurious tavern's pool right and it looks stupid, lasted 20 years with a capped 120 pop through a mod (which can be changed in settings but the mod just lowers cap in the game so you don't have to manually edit it every time.)

Of those, the best value per material ratios are Goblets. Generally, I put up iron and platinum goblet work orders and stockpile them in a place accessible near the depot.

Turn of "Animal hauling" in the chores tab if you don't want them to do the work. Also, for those better armed and skilled enemies, better have an escort to tag along your prisoner caravan, they can break out of confinement and try to wreck havoc as they escape. You can "build" the cages if you want. The wiki says you can strip thier equipment, but idk how. I got lucky, but I knew how bad it could've been and so far, my dwarves falling 1z level into a pool of water for swimming practice posed more threat than the goblins do for they might land on thier throat, the injured part explodes into gore and a major artery is exposed. That pool has a couple soap bars dropped in it and a poor skeleton of someone who died in there. It's been sort of refurbished into a bathhouse (Wiki says it's possible mainly from the older versions) but so far, no one is keen on using it.
