I Successfully Grew The Hottest Peppers In The World

I always wanted to grow the spiciest pepper in the world - so I did it this summer. But I didn’t stop at the spiciest pepper in the world - the Carolina Reaper pepper. I also grew the second spiciest pepper in the world - the Ghost Pepper, the pepper that’s the key ingredient to jerk chicken - the Jamaican Scotch Bonnet pepper, and the pepper behind the pickling tradition - the Hungarian Hot Wax Banana peppers.
I had never grown hot peppers from seed before so I was amazed at the results. At first I wasn’t even sure this was going to work, but we had to start somewhere and let me tell you...it worked. Well, prepare to get your hands dirty and your lips spicy because we’re about to hop on this wild, spicy hot pepper ride.

UNIQUE FACTS YOU’LL LEARN ABOUT IN THIS VIDEO:
1. The hottest pepper in the world, reaching over 2.2 million SHU and holding the Guinness World Record for the hottest pepper, is the Carolina Reaper.
2. Ghost peppers were once considered the world's hottest pepper, but it has been surpassed by none other than the Carolina Reaper.
3. SHU stands for ‘Scoville Heat Units (SHU)’ and it’s a measurement of the spiciness based on the concentration of ‘capsaicin’ - a chemical responsible for the sensation of the heat in peppers.
4. The main ingredient that causes the peppers to be spicy ( “capsaicin,”) has been associated with several health benefits including pain relief, improved metabolism, and potential anti-inflammatory effects.
5. Ghost peppers originated in the NorthEastern regions of India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. They were traditionally used in local cuisine to add heat to dishes, and are even used in some religious rituals and festivals in India.
6. The heat level of hot peppers can vary depending on growing conditions, soil, and environment/zone. This variability adds an element of unpredictability to their spiciness.
7. Hot banana wax peppers, also known as banana peppers or yellow wax peppers, are milder compared to some of the super-hot peppers, but they still offer a delightful flavour and a touch of heat.
8. While the banana peppers are commonly yellow, banana peppers can ripen to different colours, including orange and red. The darker the colour, the spicier the pepper.
9. Hot wax banana peppers are actually just a variety of the chilli pepper, and they’ve been grown for more than 6,000 years in Central and South America.
10. The introduction of chilli peppers to Europe and Asia is a result of the Columbian Exchange, which was the widespread transfer of plants, animals and culture between the Americas and the Old World after Christopher Columbus's voyages. Soon after, banana peppers became popular in Italy and America.

One of us! Peppers are amazing as container plants, a 5 gal bucket is almost no different than planting in the ground.

I feel like your my sister from another mister! :D Because for as long as I can remember I have always kept seeds from my fruit. Still to this day I germinate anything I can. My window has 2 lemon trees, and orange tree, 3 pineapples, many cactus, avocados. And in my very small patio garden I have garlic, onions and potato's growing (though I literally just keep them there as a plant because the pollinators love the flower). I also have a blackcurrent tree which gives lots of juicy blackcurrents and a couple of apple trees which are about 4 years old and are still quite small, they are so slow! All my plants are grown from supermarket bought fruit and veggies.

In Quebec, we have snow today, so I don't think you will have any bell peppers... But if you want to try, it is possible to overwinter your peppers since they are perennial! You just have to cut the branches at 2 inches of the node of the principal stem and bring them inside!

Last year I grew some habaneros, got one tiny little pepper that never ripened and just fell off... gonna try this year again, the plan is to grow habaneros and jalapeños (cuz they're my favorite peppers) together in a big box, also to plant them in february, I've also set up a compost bin, so, wish me luck I may also plant beans or lentils in the box before february to improve soil conditions Also, a fun fact, apparently most of the capsaicin is concentrated in the white bits inside of the pepper, not the seeds as I used to think

@@JNouveau nope, the creator of the pepper Ed Currie named it. He also made the Carolina reaper. It took 10 years of pepper breeding to make pepper X as it is now, it’s 2.69million scoville! For comparison a scotch bonnet is between 100,000-350,000 scoville

You should pluck off the flowers when the plants are small. The plants can get bigger that way and you have a bigger and better harvest. But I´m happy that you found the wonderful pepper world. There are many peppers that are spicier than the reaper because nobady should consider Guiness as granted (you need to pay thousands of dollars to be in this book). I started not that long ago and now have over 100 varieties.

We used to grow scotch bonnet for fun in our yard . Its more like a decoration than for consumtion . We never even tasted it . Why ? Because our chicken just take one peck on it and dont bother it anymore . Our chicken ate our bird eyes chillies like snacks but totally avoid the scotch bonnet . That when we know its not a chilli for normal people (us) to eat.

Did you know that there is a chilli based ointment which is form of anti inflammatory? You have to use gloves to apply it, but it can be very effective for some people. Chilli can also widely vary depending on the growing conditions. My SIL sprinkled slices of what she thought were red capsicum from the garden over a salad. I popped a nice big piece in my mouth and crunched down. I thought I was going to die. I don’t mind spicy food, but this was debilitating, I could hardly breathe. I ate about 500mls of ice cream and threw it up trying to come right. I was still feeling ill 24hrs later. She tried a tiny bit of the capsicum and was appalled. It was just the one fruit. Off one bush. All the rest were fine. Bizarre. 😮😮
